Thumbs up Love for the new My Chemical Romance album

So I was never a big fan of the band. I mean, I had heard and liked "Helena" and their cover of "Under Pressure" but never gave too much thought to the band, kind of seeing them as a teeny emo type of thing. Then I saw them on SNL last week and really liked "Welcome to the Black Parade." So I was at Best Buy on Tuesday to get a bunch of horror movies they had on sale for cheap and saw their new album and decided to pick it up.

WOW. I was BLOWN AWAY! I think it's one of the greatest albums to come out in a really long time. As far as I can tell it's a concept album. I haven't read all the lyrics yet but I think it's mostly about death. From the first song I could tell that they were drawing on a lot of influences. The opening song "The End." sounds so much like Pink Floyd's "In the Flesh" from The Wall, and a song called "Mama" sounds a lot like "The Trial," also from The Wall. I can also hear a lot of what sounds like Queen and David Bowie (which probably explains why they covered "Under Pressure," obviously fans of the two). I'm also reminded of Smashing Pumpkins at the beginning of "Welcome to the Black Parade."

I find it very refreshing to see a band who values making a quality ALBUM and not focused on a couple of hit singles. Actually my sister told me that Green Day's American Idiot is similar in this way, but I've never listened to the whole album so I don't know.

Anyway, so has anyone else listened to this album yet? What do y'all think of it? Like it, hate it? I highly recommend it. Check out their Myspace page to hear "Welcome to the Black Parade" if you haven't caught it on the radio yet. http://www.myspace.com/mychemicalromance

That's all. Just wanted to pass on my enthusiasm! Back to lurking for a bit.

Brad

I hated, and I mean hated their last album. I couldn't even get through the whole thing. But everyone says this one is amazing. I may have to check it out....

Their studio stuff is okay, but they are absolutely WRETCHED in concert. Out of tune, strained, etc. Leads me to believe there's crafty production behind the scenes.

My oldest daughter likes MCR... I'll have to have her download some of it for me. Thanks for the recommendation.

I've always been a casual fan. I'll have to check this album out. I'm not sure I'm digging the blonde hair on the lead singer.

The only MCR song I know is "Helena", Not a fan since the vocals sound a tad bit too "emo" to me (Musically they're alright).
