Default Magnitude 6.3 earthquake strikes Hawaii

http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dw....3f4d3644.html

HONOLULU - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 struck Hawaii early Sunday morning, waking up residents and knocking out power.

The U.S. Geological Survey also reported several aftershocks, including one measuring a magnitude of 5.8. No damage reports were immediately available.

The quake occurred at 7:07 a.m. local time, 10 miles north-northwest of Kailua Kona, a town on the west coast of the Big Island, said Don Blakeman, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center, part of the U.S. Geological Survey.

Blakeman said researchers were still trying to ascertain how many aftershocks struck and how large.

Blakeman said there was no risk of a Pacific-wide tsunami, but a possibility of significant wave activity in Hawaii.

The quake occurred about 155 miles to the southeast of Honolulu, the state capital, in Oahu.

Isn't it weird that it's been several hours now, and the news networks still aren't broadcasting live from the islands? Any other disaster would see dumbass reporters standing on piles of rubble, etc., yet so far they're only taking phone reports and showing that same stupid graphic of the islands with the pulsing circle for the quake site. I hope it's not worse than they're saying.

There are widespread power outages on the big island and elwsewhere. and, I think it has now been determined it was a 6.6 earthquake. there was a simultaneous storm as well, so people were contending with wet weather as well as power outages...I guess people have been running to convenience stores to get quick eats...but the good news is, no deaths that I know of.

I don't know what happened with our TV stations/reporters here yesterday. I know the power was off, but don't they have generators or some kind of high-tech thing for when electricity goes off? I have a little (and very old) TV that can run on batteries. I tried it several times yesterday, and only one station came in, not a network/news station. So I didn't see any news coverage until today.

oh yeah, we're fine. no damage here on Oahu, we just didn't have power on Sunday. The Big Island got a lot of damage though. I heard the estimate today is like $78 million or something.
