Default Friend

I've just been looking at Amazon and checking out a new book about Stevie (sorry Homer)

I used the check inside thingy and typed in Christine McVie and quite a few things came including speculation that Friend is about Stevie.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0978...go.x=6&go.y=12

Does anyone think this is the case?

Personally I don't but I have no idea why!

I've heard that rumour before, but I'm not sure that I agree with that interpretation. Certainly it's possible, but the lyrics are far too open-ended to conclusively say, "it's definitely about Stevie," or really any one person for that matter. It could be about John... Mick... heck, with all the references to the sun going down, it could be about Billy or Rick!

I remember there was some speculation that it was about Stevie, John, Mick, Fleetwood Mac, etc. I think she wrote it about the guy who inspired the album...missing his friendship. I guess it's possible it's Fleetwood Mac related, but I doubt it. I believe Mick in an interview mentioned that ITM had nothing to do with anyone in Fleetwood Mac. It is fun to speculate though.

By the way, did anyone notice the last name of the author of this book?

I think it's highly unlikely that the song is 'about' any member of Fleetwood Mac. In fact, I don't think the song is necessarily 'about' anyone in particular. What a songwriter does is start with a feeling, an incident, a person -- any aspect of the human experience, for that matter -- and uses that bit of experience to go wherever their imagination leads them.

Maybe Chris was thinking about the man who supposedly inspired much of 'In the Meantime' when the first phrases or bars of music popped into her head; but that doesn't mean she didn't think of other people she has known and loved while she was composing the song. The song uses lyrical imagery to describe a feeling that just about everyone can relate to, which is why the song can touch so many people.

I think that perhaps some people got a little over excited about this song given that we know a lot of the songs on ITM are very personal.

I don't think it's about Stevie in particular but about generally missing people she left behind in Los Angeles

well i would say it's about a dog from "long ago", as she says "i really miss my friend" in the chorus. so no need to upset dougal or george. in fact, it's probably the same dog songbird is about!

that's a good point.

"Long ago before the moon was young
And before the first love song had ever been sung
We both knew beyond a shadow of doubt
What loving some doggy was all about"
