HELLO EVERYONE,
JUST WANTED YOUR THOUGHTS ON HOW U THINK LINDSEY COMPARES TO THE OTHER LEAD GUITARISTS IN THE WORLD. FOR ME, PERSONALLY, STEVE LUKATHER FROM TOTO IS THE GREATEST LEAD GUITARIST AND INTERESTING ENOUGH HE PLAYED ON STAND BACK. WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK? GYPSYXO PS: IM NOT A MUSO SO I DONT KNOW ANYTHING TECHNICAL ABOUT GUITAR PLAYING |

This is probably better in the Lindsey forum but I thought I'd say that Lindsey is definately unique, not the "greatest" in terms of technicality but I don't follow that line of thinking. The most difficult, fastest guitar solo is pointless in my opinion unless it serves the song. The song being greatest and ultimate appeal, above the guitarist and the displaying of their ability or "greatness". I've been listening to a lot of U2 lately (I was all geared up for their tour of NZ but that was postponed so I'm trying to fill the void) and the Edge would hardly be listed as one of the greatest but what he does serves the song. Same with someone like George Harrison, it doesn't have to be flashy. What I'm not into is progessive metal, Dream Theater style where the purpose of the song is for each musician to use their instrument to their greatest ability (or "show off" in my opinion). To me that is almost like the song is irrelevant. So, Lindsey is my favourite, or one of my favourites. For the most part uses the guitar to serve the song in his individual fashion. My list of favourite other guitarist would probably be laughed at for the reason that they aren't exactly Hendrix.

While I can appreciate the technical wizardry of guitarists like Steve Vai, Alan Holdsworth, Yngvie Malmsteen, etc, being a guitar player myself, their music seems so cold & calculated...there's just nothing that seems to "come from their soul" about their music. "Flash without substance". My personal faves (no particular order after the first 6): Peter Green Eric Clapton Duane Allman Rick Vito Billy F. Gibbons Lowell George Bob Welch Mark Knopfler Danny Kirwan Dickey Betts George Harrison Bonnie Raitt Jerry Garcia Derek Trucks Dickey Betts Toy Caldwell Jeff Beck Carlos Santana Keith Richards Andy Summers Warren Haynes Pete Townshend Ronnie Wood Jimi Hendrix Mick Taylor Mike Campbell Joe Walsh Dave Mason Jimmy Page (ok, I'll relent) Lindsey Buckingham And, then there's the jazz guys: Charlie Christian Wes Montgomery Les Paul George Van Eps Ron Eschete Chet Atkins George Benson Joe Pass Herb Ellis John McLaughlin And, country guys.. Keith Urban Don Rich Brent Mason Jimmy Bryant Hank Garland Brad Paisley (who is surprisingly a fantastic guitarist) Jimmy Hyland Charlie Daniels (don't know his name, but the lead guitarist in the Brooks & Dunn band) Let's not forget the blues guys: Robert Johnson Charley Patton Lightnin' Hopkins Hound Dog Taylor Hubert Sumlin BB King Buddy Guy Robert Cray Bob Margolin Freddie King Albert King Albert Collins Jimmie Vaughan Ronnie Earl Johnny Winter Stevie Ray Vaughan

Yngwie J. Malmsteen-Though his Baroque based minor scales, are rather flashy you should hear him play the blues...He is amazing (I have a few of his releases where he rips on ol' Hendrix/Deep Purple covers). He just doesnt want to play the blues is the problem (He could be along the lines of Gary Moore if he added more blues to his diet-Moore can shred with the best of 'em and still out blues 'em all! Oh, Mr.Moore's mentor-the one and only Peter Green, Who sold Gary his first Les Paul!!!) Allan Holdsworth-I prefer his jazzier music releases.

Peter Green and Mark Knopfler would be my favourites of those listed. To be honest, when I first got a guitar I just wanted to sound like Luther Perkins, someone certainly not in Steve Vai's company but as I said earlier, it's the overall sound of the song that I care about.

I'm not really sure, but I swear that someone was just recently shouting that Mike Campbell's God in my ear. Would that be better than the world's best lead guitarist?!

my PERSONAL favorite guitarists is not that long a list but I put Lindsey up in the top 5. My other choices I feel do not qualify as individual artists as the material done by the artists was performed (I believe) with TWO guitars in each case. Freebird by Skynyrd and Hotel California by the Eagles when Don Felder was still a part of the group. Those two guys in Skynyrd are my top choices as Freebird still blows me away everytime I hear it. Like I said me personally talking and not trying to sound like I am an expert of any kind. I really think some of Lindsey's better work went into the Boston 2003 DVD.

Not to be disrespectful....Lindsey's playing is very impressive but I'm not very impressed with "playing fast" and although I think he's an absolute genious creatively, his playing in recent years is just too redundant sounding. Say Goodbye is played too fast on the cd...Thank God he slowed it down (the way it should be played) during the SYW tour. No disrespect but anyone can play fast. We know he's got the energy but I hope he doesn't go overboard on this next tour. I'm sorry I can't think of another guitarist to compare him too but I do love Jim Mankey of Concrete Blonde's guitar playing.
....Baby there's no one that can ever replace that heartache..... Last edited by crtrofthenight; 07-01-2006 at 02:11 AM.. |
