Angry My Msg Review !!!

Here is what I posted on the Tom Petty message board
Posted June 24, 2006 08:19 PM

Here is my two cents on the show.

I came from Ottawa Ont Canada for the show which is about 8 hours away. For starters I was in Section 7 Row D so my seats were pretty close. I thought overal the show was very good. I had not seen Tom Petty in concert before so whatever he played was the first time for me. I will be honest I was really going to see Stevie as she is my fav singer and Fleetwood Mac is my fav band. The music was all good although Learning to Fly and Insider could have been done a little better if they had done them plugged in with the drums etc. They were still great but I thought having them plugged in would have been good. Tom played all of the hits I expected to hrat and played them well. Any way my only problems were not so much the show as much as the people around me. For starters the row in front of me was all white trash drunks who were were stoned and drunk from the get go. One of them was soo fat and drunk that when he would stumble back he would almost fall into me and I would shove him away. He kept yelling WHOO WHOO and then grabbing his friends or a stranger near by and start screaming god knows what as he was slurring his words. The young punk beside kept him lighting up marijuana and I was soo pissed. The whole night all I could smell was dope. It didn't feel like they were real fans at all but rather some dumb jerks that had tickets to a concert. I mean what is the point of being drunk? The tickets were not dirt cheap which makes me think people like that could have saved themselves the money and got drunk and stoned at home for free. At one point the guy two rows in front turned to the people and said if your fat friend touches me again I will beat the **** out of him.

Meanwhile beside me on the end of my row was a young copule no more then 20 getting drunk on those $ 7.50 champagne shots. When they were not drinking they were all over each other moaning and groaning etc. they were definately not here for the show.

There was a security guard right there and he did nothing. The couple next to my brother at one point got up and left and did not return.

As well I noticed at several times during the show people were wondering around yapping and carrying on not at all interested in the show. (Especially during Melinda and Square One)

As for the opening act I may be in the minority here but I thought Trey was BORING!!!! I couldn't understand anything he was singing and every song went on and on with these long guitar solos that grew tiresome.

Overal the concert was good, but I wish some people would be more respectful of the paying fans who are here for a good time and not to get drunk and talk all night.

Finally regarding the setlist I understand why some are complaining if they have seen TPATH for years and gotten the same stale parade of hits , but to be fair I have had to endure that same problem as a FM /SN fan. I would die if I went to a show where Dreams, Rhiannon, The Chain, Gold Dust Woman, Landslide, I'm So Afraid, Big Love,Go Your Own Way and Don't Stop were not performed.

That SUX! WTF is UP w/ people that come to get drunk. I love to drink, I'll be ther 1st to admitt it, but w/ concert ticket prices, I don't have an extra grand for 3 beers. Unreal. By the "huffed" face next to this post/thread, I though, oh man, this is terrible, but seems your concert experience was mostly cheated by dumb fellow audience members. Just not right. I don't get it AT ALL! Sorry man!

Ugh, that was the worst and flattest "champagne" I've ever had, but I'm a sucker for someone walking right next to me selling alcohol.

Sorry your experience was so awful. There were a lot of drunk people around me as well, with many talking loudly during the pretty songs. Usually that bugs the sh*t out of me, but I was able to ignore it this time. It helped having an aisle seat, as I was able to get away from everyone.

I had the some problem at the Petty show I went to last year. I've been to lots of concerts, and I've imbibed plenty myself on occasion. But that show was, by far, the worst I've experirenced as far as people in the crowd being disrespectful to fellow concert-goers. Drunk, falling over, spilling beer on people, peeing on the floor It was terrible & just about ruined the show for me. Thank God Petty rocked.

I've said it before, just go down to the local bar. At least you wont have a $100 cover charge there...

Cool

I did enjoy the show. But I kept finding myself being distracted by someone or something that had nothing to do with the concert. It won't stop me from future Petty shows. I enjoy their music and would see them again for sure.

Default I had a similar experience

One of the three people to my right got up EACH and every song for beer or to pee (I assume). Every damned song they would push you to the back of the seat to get out of the aisle and, a couple of minutes later, push their way back.

They were blasted and throwing their arms around and it was, indeed, one of the most annoying concerts I've been to--and I think it did taint the whole experience for me. I was in such a good mood before I got there and very open to listening to Tom's music with an open mind--but I was really irritated after the first 15 minutes and by the time the concert was down to the encores--I just didn't care anymore.

I'm sorry you had to travel to experience this bad behavior.

I am so sorry you had that horrible experience. There is no excuse for people to come to concerts to act like a bunch of idiots, especially since people pay so much for tickets. I don't usually go to concerts because of this. I went to the Dave Matthews concert in Central Park a few years back - and I was in the VIP area and all these 20 somethings were acting like a bunch of dumbass idiots with their girlfriends - or with girls that became their "girlfriends" only a few moments earlier so they could get up close to the stage. All the while I was getting crushed. So after a 1/2 hour, I moved to a better area and had a blast!

When I was a teenager, I went to see The Police play at what was then called the Brendan Byrne Arena in New Jersey. (I guess I'm dating myself.) There were there guys in the row in front that got so drunk and sloppy, they kept turning around trying to make out with us! Here we are a bunch of girls from high school who did not say one word to them, minding our own business and these idiots took it upon themselves to violate our space and bodies and just...help themselves. When we told them to "F" off, they did, and I think one of them eventually passed out in his seat.

Question

I must be out of it...do people still light up at concerts? Sure maybe an outdoor venue, but I thought smoking was banned in all indoor venues. Or is this just in California?

The class of people at the Mansfield, MA show was not any better. As a matter of fact. a fight almost broke out with 2 people in line at the ticket window before the show even started.
There were also people doing quite a few beer runs during the show and acting like idiots.

The Garden was reeking through out the entire performance.
