Female singers with a strong gay following.

Okay, I don't get it and I don't know if I ever did, I can't keep straight which female singers are gay community icons anymore. Often it just seems like they all are! I have a Cass Elliot webpage from a lon g time ago now and once in awhile I get comments about how it's strange for me to like her music so much, or that I must be either a lesbian or a gay man posing as a woman because I have a Cass Elliot page. I guess the first one I heard this about was liking Judy Garland and second probably Bette Midler. Then it was Cher. Then it was Stevie Nicks! Now I have no idea... is enjoying Barbra Streisand music screamingly gay now? Nancy Sinatra? Dusty Springfield? Karen Carpenter? Is it just people drag queens can impersonate with some success like Tallulah Bankhead or Carol Channing? Are there drag kings doing Wayne Newton, Jim Neighbors or maybe even Tiny Tim? I have never heard of drag queens doing Cass Elliot, but maybe they do? Oh well, I decided not to care and went on loving Cass' music, and also Nico, and if drag queens aren't doing her they really should be, she could be so much fun! "You're such a claaaawn." Well, if there is a list I would still like to see who is on it, or rather who people think are on it.

huh. well, i don't think babs's huge gay following is a new thing. bette's popular with gays because she built her career performing in bath houses. i didn't know cass elliot had a big gay following though ...

you're right about nico. there should be tons of queens doing her! (so to speak ...)

I was thinking of this last night actually. My Barbra loving co-worker called his cousin who has ticket connections to see if she could get him some Striesand tickets. He says to me 'well, if she didn't know that I was gay she knows now"

So yeah I think that Babs is one.

I always think of Liza Minelli and Bette Midler oh and Diana Ross is another one when I think of gay icons. Oh yes and I think that Madonna and Cher would be a few other ones.

true, along with melissa etheridge, kd lang, the indigo girls, sarah mclachlan, etc. but i've found that "gay" almost never means "lesbian" - it's not nearly as interesting or popular.

i know they're on the list, but they just don't seem as talented as the others. to me, babs, judy, bette = legendary; shania = blip on the radar.
