Default Brimfield Antique Show?

Anyone ever been? It's held 3 times a year in Brimfield, Mass & I've always wanted to go but have never been able. I'm going to try & pull it off this year, but it's only about a 50/50 chance right now.

In general - does anyone else love antiquing? I just love old crap. I don't really have a huge collection of anything in particular, but I think it's so interesting. Furniture & clothing are my main interests.

I love going to Auctions..there are quite a few around here especially in the summer and fall..where they sell off old homesteads...so many antiques ..I don;t collect anything either really..Although I did buy a silver serving ware set called a Fish set apparently from the early 1900's ..and made by the Royal families silversmith..I have a friend who deals in antiques and I am always amazed at what some people will buy..

I don't like antiques, per se, but I love old collectibles -- mostly pop culture stuff like Disneyland collectibles from 1960 to 1980, carnival glass from 1907 to 1917, WWII paper ephemera like war bonds & food stamps, Occupied Japan stuff, & old Fleetwood Mac concerts on tape 1975 to 1982.

Do you have any carnival glass, Paula? The low-end stuff is cheap (hence the name low end) & the high-end stuff is more & more expensive with each passing year.

If you want to make any carnival glass purchases, ask me first & I will help you.

^ Yeah, I guess the term "antique" is used pretty loosely now. I'm more into "collectibles" too. I don't have any carnival glass, but I think it's beautiful. My mom has a few pieces, but I believe they're all repro stuff - all crap, in other words.

I really like to look more than buy. Of course, if I had more money, I'm sure I'd be more apt to buy. I have a console stereo from the 40's(?) that isn't working right now, but it's a gorgeous piece of furniture. I also have a wooden sewing box & a sewing machine table (one of those where the machine is inside the table & flips up when needed) from the 50's or 60's. Of course, I don't sew. A few old medicine bottles/containers/tins, an old ice crusher, some hand tools of my family's, Grandma's cedar chest, etc.

In other words - very random, no real rhyme or reason. I recently almost bought a hair dryer from 1923 (with original box!) that screwed into a light fixture just cuz it looked really cool & interesting. I really didn't have the cash at the time, but I may go back & see if it's still there.

Forgot to mention - Antiques Roadshow is one of my favorite shows.

There seems to be alot of folks who are out for that carnival glass stuff..I see quite a bit of it around here...although I dont know much about it..it is pretty..
David do you know anything about flatware? I have been trying to find some info on the set i bought..the only thing I could find out that at one time these were silversmiths for the Royal family? It came from a estate of an elderly couple who passed away(100 yrs old) and it was a wedding gift..Its in a old wooden case with skelton key..engraved on it ..it says By her Majesty's Special Warrant Mappin Brothers...220 Regent Street London..
Not that it matters if its worth anything..I feel in love with it cause I love the knives ,they are sorta oversized and have beautiful carvings on it..as well as the forks..

I sure don't (other than that Reed & Barton is good stuff -- remember that scene in "Risky Business"?). But there are some good reference books out there on flatware that might have answers to your questions.

A lot of people collect flatware specialty pieces, like salt spoons, cellars, ice cream forks (yes, forks), bon-bon spoons, & all different types of knives (fish knives, salad knives, cheese knives, bread knives).

I love antiques and collectibles. In fact, I have a business on the side for selling them. I sell on ebay and have two booth spaces at a local antique co-op. I love going to auctions and flea markets and yard sales. It is fun and educational, and you can really make some cash.

I prefer to buy vintage - I tell people that the only thing I buy new is food and underwear! Being in the "biz" allows me to constantly cycle "new" things into my personal collection, and when I tire of it, I can just sell it on ebay or in my booth.

I have many, many reference books on antiques and collectibles.

Oh . . . and the name of my biz . . . Belladonna's Cottage

http://www.brimfieldshow.com/

I'm trying to see if I can go to the September show, we'll see. I have a good friend that loves this stuff, so she'll go with me if hubby won't.

We used to do the rounds of antique/collecable places quite regularly but not so much anymore. We have a fairly eclectic "collection", but with a general theme of Egypt-arab-desert scenes, and most of our stuff comes from the 1920s and 30s when all that was quite popular.

We have a bit of Royal Doulton seriesware (mainly "Tunis" and "Moorish Gateway" and some others) and bits from other potteries, Beswick Palm Tree jugs and vases in Cobalt or Burgundy(meant to invoke tropical climes, but a palm tree is a palm tree), Bossons character heads of Arabs and other Eastern figures and prints (David Roberts watercolours, Lehnert & Landrock tinted heliogravures and vintage glass plate photos). Recently we picked up an old Singer treddle sewing machine because it has the lotus print design.

My wife has a lot of 30s style furniture, but that came mainly from her grandparents.

Lehnert & Landrock - similar to No 1 and 10.

Moorish Gateway

Beswick Palm Tree

Bossons

The September show stinks. It's all the junk that they couldn't sell at the two previous shows. You get some good bargains because they're closing up until the following year, but the stuff isn't the greatest. Overall, it's okay, but I don't know if I'd travel all the way from Buffalo to Western Mass for it. The July show is the best one to go to, imo. My mother lives about ten miles from it and it's a real hoot. My favorite is the gas stations off of the turnpike competing for business by sending out people with signs that say they have the cheapest gas.

Neb Ma'at Re is the "throne name" (that is, name taken when crowned) of the Egyptian King usually known as Amenhotep III - Tutankhamun's grandfather (or possibly father, or just grandfather-in-law depending on the theory to which you subscribe).

It means "Re (or Ra) is the Lord of Truth".

My wife is an archeologist specialising in early Egyptian history. I'm an interested amateur. A III was an impressive King and it seem like a cool name. Especially on another forum where I spent a lot of time correcting misinformation and squashing urban myths.

You know, you really suck! I tell you I'm going to go in September & you tell me the September show stinks.

I? hate you.

JK. Kind of. The 'cheap leftover crap' is kind of why I'm leaning toward September. Plus I don't think I can take off work in July, I already have my camping trip planned the week before. But thanks for the advice, Negative Nellie.
