Default Quick Perth Thoughts

I just got home from the Perth concert and I wanted to post some bits and pieces. It was a pretty weird concert.

It was a double bill with Farnham again. She went on first though.

I think she might have been sick (or getting sick). I'm sure she was on something. Vocally, she was in fine form. But she seemed tired.

During the band intros she giggled all the way through it, and was struggling to get her sentences out. Now when I say I think she was on something, I'm thinking like cold & flu medication or something...I'm not trying to imply she was on something illegal at all.

I think this was the worst of the 4 concerts I saw, but having said that it was still amazing. She nailed every song. Stand Back was the best I've seen here. Again, If Anyone Falls was a highlight. It just keeps getting better and better.

Rock & Roll and Beauty And The Beast were two other highlights.

There was no Edge Walk! This was the worst set up concert I went to. The stage was too high. There was no way for Stevie to bend down far enough to reach the people standing at the stage. The stage was higher than the average person's height!

It was an outdoor concert and it was quite windy. The screens were blowing and rippling around almost constantly.

The security people were total nazis! They wouldn't let people up to the stage. I was sitting on the side though, and people in the front blocks were allowed up but yeesh it was tough. Then some people got up to dance on the grass and the security people made them move so far over I'm surprised they could see Stevie.

Even Vanessa Carlton was off. She messed up on three songs! The first time I thought "Oh she's just doing her usual shtick", but then it happened two more times!

I know I'm making it sound like this concert sucked but it truly didn't. Like I said, Stevie's voice was spot on. I went with my sister and mother and they were totally blown away. She sang so much better than when she was here with FM in 04.

The wind did kinda make Stevies outfits look cool. They were all flowing and billowing in the wind. It did a number on her hair though. They wasn't really a fringe like she had at the other shows because it was always being blown off her face.

So anyway, I loved every single song and really enjoyed every minute of it.

I can't think of anything else right now, but if I do I'll be sure to add it here.

This would really piss me off.

Maybe you wouldn't have thought it was awful if you hadn't all the other shows to compare it to. But no edge walk!

I hope she is ok! I'm not happy to hear she may be sick and/or tired. I really want her to take a break after the NZ shows. Take care of yourself Stevie! Remember guys, she is 57 years old. A lot of 20-30 year olds wouldn't have the energy to do what she does. It's very difficult physically and emotionally.

Absolutely. As much as I'm hoping she tours here or Europe this year, if she needs a long break then she should take it. Although didn't she have 5-6 months off after the end of the U.S. Gold Dust tour?

What, stand in one place and sing for an hour and a half, maybe spin around a few times? If there are 20-30 year olds who don't have the energy to do that, I hope they're receiving some sort of treatment.

Bob Dylan's several years older than Stevie, and he plays five shows a week when he's on tour. Springsteen's about her age, and he puts on concerts that are much longer than hers. And that includes a lot of running around and guitar slinging if he's with the band. And ****, have you seen the Stones lately?

If Stevie's at all ill, I hope that she has a chance to rest up a bit and that she feels better soon. But Christ, let's not pretend that she's performing some kind of back-breaking, soul-sucking labour standing up there. That's some damn nice work, if you can get it.

I'll add a few ladies to the list for comparison: Tina Turner (born 1939), Carole King (1942), Bette Midler (born 1945), even Cher (1946) . These ladies can all put a lot of energy into a show. I think when it comes to energy, Tina and Bette are at the top of the heap, and have always been there. Stevie was born in 1948. She's still the new kid on the block. None of them have to work hard at this point in their careers, but if you still put yourself out there, fans expect a great show. I haven't exactly heard anyone complaining about Stevie's performances on the Aussie tour. Maybe she has a bug or was out late. (She gets on a midnight plane, she's done it a thousand times?)

This reminds me of her public tribulations with the IRS when her 1991 income tax filing was questioned. Her attorney responded that her clothing expenses were as great as they were due to the intense and demanding performances that she was putting on at the time. Let's see, I remember she lifted her arm and waved her hand once during the Behind the Mask shows I saw.

Have you ever heard of jet lag? Changing hotels night after night? Flying from city to city? Putting on a big production? Just being Stevie Nicks? And she isn't just standing in one place for an hour and a half. Singing is like exercise and performing can take a lot out of a person physically and emotionally, I don't care if you're standing there or jumping up and down. Touring is tiring for anyone, let alone a 57 year old who is half way around the world. And how about all the interviews, talk shows, fan meetings, fittings, etc. I'm sure she has a packed and hectic schedule over there unlike you and I who are sitting on our asses behind a computer chatting on a forum.

As far as Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, etc. I'm sure they get tired as well and don't forget she has had a lot of health problems over the years. So what, you can think of a handful of artists who are in their 50's and 60's touring the world. For every 1 you can think of I can think of 20 who are retired. In fact a lot of people her age are retired and living in Florida. Not many 57 year olds are touring the world honey.

I was basically showing my concern and saying she could possibly use some rest. Give me a break.

On edit: The review said she seemed tired but still in top shape vocally and I think that's totally understandable.

Well, I'm sorry to hear that she was a bit off, but I can remember Late May 2004 in Holmdel for Fleetwood Mac when her voice was AWFUL. they were cancelling alot of shows around that time, as I'm sure some of you all remember.

Even Springsteen has the ocasional off night. He rocks, yes, but Everyone has off days. I had one at work yesterday, but THOUSANDS of people don't know about it! I love how the whole Auzzie tour so far has been nothing but excitement and good news, and now one not so great review and WHAM!!! I hear acouple of angry villagers coming with their torches. but then again, THEY probabally never have off days.

Was it at the entertainment centre? Subiaco oval? I know She doesnt "do" casinos, but that would be awsome to see her at Burswood.

I saw them in Jacksonville in May 2004 and, although still a fun show, it was my least favorite performance out of every Stevie/FM show I've been to. I wonder what was wrong with her?
