Default Since Lindsey plays one...

...I just had to share that Gibson (in their infinite wisdom {sarcasm} ) has decided as of January 1 of this year to discontinue making the Chet Atkins CE/CEC models (the ones Lindsey uses these days for "Big Love")

RIP to the Chet Atkins CE/CEC.

Default That's a shame

I can only think it's due to the fact that Chet is no longer with us...

I don't think Lindsey has that many of them either from what I understand. Now's the time to buy 'em Buck!

Having said that, Lindsey's are now as much Turner as they are Gibson after Rick loaded his pickups and electronics into them..

It always struck me as odd that Lindsey doesn't use an RN-6 for Big Love and Go Insane. My initial thought was it was due to the wider string spacing on the Chet Atkins giving him more room for the fingers but he uses a Renaissance for Say Goodbye and Red Rover so go figure?

If theyr'e not making them then..and he needs to keep his old ones pristine..he'll have to refrain from using them as bowling ball practice onstage!
Dare we even think about the slow demise of Big Love, if he can't get used to playing it on another guitar? I'm sure he'll stock up on them before they dissappear altogether......there again, maybe (just maybe!!) we'll get the ELECTRIC version instead, now thats worth wishing for.

Haha...you've overlooked the obvious dude....Two reasons why he probably doesn't use the RN for Big Love and Go Insane. First off - tone!! The Chet Atkins has a much fatter classical tone than the RN (the epitome of this is Go Insane from the Dance - never in 1000 years could you make an RN sound like that), and Big Love and Go Insane are both very much classical compositions (whilst Red Rover and Say Goodbye have clearly been written with a more modern sound in mind).

Secondly - he started playing BL and GI with the Chet Atkins back in the early 90's before the RN was around and he probably loved the sound so much and got used to playing those songs on that guitar that he decided to stick with them rather than change to a Turner guitar just for the sake of playing (yet another) Turner.

OK dude, point taken...

BUT...

Lindsey's Chet Atkins uses the same electronics pretty much as an RN-6 (18V Highlander pickup) plus a few extras. Rick could make LB an RN-6 in the same woods as a Chet Atkins, put it through a D-TAR Mama Bear and you wouldn't tell the difference. So either Lindsey is stuck in his ways and prefers the Chet for those songs or Rick hasn't convinced him yet..

All good fellow. but now I want a very specific description of your and madformacs' perception of lindsey's soundstage, AND of Lindsey's new song Shut Us Down. I still haven't seen Soundstage but a selfrespecting signed model-oneplayer has......

and after a momentary lapse of reason over here at the Ledge, you two's vision is very anticipated over here......

cool you slipped in...

rock out dude!

I thought Soundstage (Seteca has my DVD of it at the moment so he might post something later on) was very good.

Every bit as well executed as "The Dance", the post production work from Mark Needham and Lindsey Buckingham shows though a few times though, the sound coming from the guitar is not what you see LB doing with his fingers at times but unless you were looking and knew what to look for it's hardly noticeable really. It is a bit odd not hearing a bassline there but if LB had enlisted John to play too it would have been Fleetwood Mac minus the drummer Soundstage instead!

I was pleased to hear Murrow put through its paces but shook my head a little at the "I'm So Afraid" solo. I guess Lindsey didn't have enough time to work out a full arrangement of the song for this event. Pleased to see Lindsey using his new (well 2003 anyway) Model 1 for this song too...

The sound mix was great and full marks to Needham here..

"Shut Us Down" I love the guitar work here. The voice takes about four run throughs to get used to but I think it fits very well. My favorite LB track at the moment..

The "few extras" being hex pickups in the bridge that are run into a guitar synth, really beefing up the guitar parts (an example is the string parts on "Everbody Finds Out" on SYW)...and the extra "bassy" tones on "Big Love". Sure, he may be standing on stage by himself playing the Chet Atkins on "Big Love", but he's got a virtual orchestra of synth patches firing off at the same time. And, you wonder why you don't get the same tone as Lindsey when you try to play "Big Love"?

It's not that the RN-6 has any less tone than the Chet Atkins, Lindsey just has a not-quite-so-secret weapon installed on the Chet Atkins that he DOESn't have on his RN-6.

I don't think I ever said I played "Big Love" Steve? I don't own a nylon cutaway for a start, or a Roland VG8 or long nails.....

Which proves my initial point that Rick could give him an RN-6 loaded with a Roland synth output and the same Turner designed electronics that he put in the Chet Atkins and he would sound the same without the need for the Gibson.... Right?

I meant that as a generic "you", not you in particular.

Exactly...and, as what happens when one plays the same song on a different guitar, something different happens with the song. (which after playing the same arrangement of "Big Love" for nearly a decade & a half CAN'T be a BAD thing, right? )
