Question Virgin Mobile

I just got a good deal on one of their phones at Radio Shack this weekend. I bought it for my Dad to have with him in case of an emergency or if I need to get in touch with him while he out with the car.
I did not sign up for the service yet and I have not even told my Dad that I got it for him yet. I did not open it up yet so I can take it back if he does not want one.
My question is does anyone have their service? I have Verizon but I don't like them and their phones were way too much $$$. I just want to do a 'Pay as you go" type deal for my Dad because I am sure that he won't be using it that much. Maybe one hour total a month if even that much. I figure that even if I buy a $20.00 card for 90 days and he never uses it I will still be only out $40.00.

Yep. I've got it, and love it. $20 every 90 days, BUT, if you sign up a credit card for automatic "top up", it's only $15 every 90 days. FIVE BUCKS A MONTH!!! It's 25c a minute, for the first 4 minutes a day, then 10c a minute after that. If you LIVE on your cell phone, this obviously isn't for you. If you only make a couple quicky calls a week, it's perfect!
Coverage is everything that Verizon was, if not better.

Thanks for the info. I know that they have 3 different plans. I think that they do have one with free nights and weekends, too.
Do you know if they have a voice mail service?
I will just need to show Dad how to use it and make sure that he does not lose it.

I have NO idea!
Honestly, I HATE talking on the phone, so I don't fool with that stuff. The info probably available at their site though:

I had it, and got rid of it quickly. Theres no reception around here. None. And I talked for like, 15 minutes a week, and still ended up paying out the ass. Grr.

Yeah, it's really only for people that want to use the phone only for occasional calls. Like I said, I don't like talking on the phone, so it's perfekt for me.
I have considered "upping" my minutes though.

I bought the Virgin Mobile pay as you go for my boys. It works fine. It's on Sprint's network so it has great reception (we're in the Dallas/Fort Worth area). I bought them both 20.00 top up cards and it was easy to set up. You should be good to go.

I've had Virgin pay as you go for over two years. The reception is just fine and it's a good deal if you don't use it very much. I pay about $20 a month.

My boyfriend has it and hates it, but he's persnickety. the one thing he really does hate is that Virgin keeps sending him text messages and voice mail messages that he ends up paying for whether he wants to access them or not.

I guess it all depends on Sprint's service area. I checked the Virgin site and the coverage in the Providence area seems to be good. My Dad would not be straying out of that area anyway so I guess that it would be good for him. I figure that even for $40.00 it is worth a try. Anything is better then that awful Verizon. He does like the idea that he is going to have a cell phone.
