Default Martha Wainwright

Is anyone here a fan? Does anyone know her music? She might appeal to lovers of Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, her brother Rufus, or her mother and aunt, Kate and Anna McGarrigle. But she is certainly not lost in their shadows. After hearing over and over that this is one of the best albums of 2005, I finally caved. Had to hear what I was missing... In two small words - a lot.

Her site has a few of her songs up to listen to - no downloading necessary.

http://www.marthawainwright.com/news.html Just scroll down to the lower left hand corner.

I finally bought the full CD today - I am completely addicted. I can't get enough of it. Her writing is brilliant - and her voice is so unique. What do you guys think?

I'm familiar with her. She opened for Cyndi Lauper at Hamilton Place in 2004, and I was... not impressed. She said she was sick/having an off night, and I believed her. She was really not well-recieved, but I haven't had a chance to listen to any of her studio stuff, aside from Lolita, and Bloody Mother****ing Asshole(which she performed at the concert). I like her songwriting, if not her voice.

Wow - what a double bill that must have been. Sorry she was under the weather that day. I'd love to see her live. I guess I missed her tour through Toronto when she released the album. Honestly, I didn't care for her voice the first time I heard it either. I don't know why she suddenly is appealing so much to me. BMFA is a great song - too bad it'll never make it to radio. I love the verse

You have no idea... no idea how it feels
To be on your own
In your own home
With the f*cking phone
With the mother of gloom
Standing over your bed
With her hand in your head...

Yeah, I do have a thing about the dark and depressing...

Martha's great. Her brother Rufus is a gifted singer -
amazing pipes and he has a few really fantastic albums under his belt.
Check out his self-titled first album - produced by Jon Brion.

Another great album is The McGarrigle Hour - features Martha and Rufus

I saw her on Letterman one night... I remember her so she must have left some sort of impression on me. Can't remember what she sang.

Thumbs up

Yes, I got her album when it came out. I'm a much bigger fan of Rufus, but her style is cool. Very different from his...not as, uh, bombastic? I'm not sure the word...she's very good. I can't say that I am completely in love with her album or that it is "brilliant" but it is an excellent debut. I love her voice.

I've recently gotten into Rufus, too - a friend of mine has his CDs, and everytime we're over there now, I beeline it to the player and put on Poses. What a frighteningly talented family. I've never seen either of them live - but I'm hoping they'll be coming back through Toronto soon.

That sounds phenomenal. I will look for it. I only have one McGarrigles CD - Matapedia. I love it...

Hmmm, sorry I've never heard of her. But it sounds like from what you have to say she's pretty good.

Okay, I retract my earlier statement. She's good. I just gave BMFA a listen last night (i'd had it on my computer for ages), and damn. I can't remember the last time I've put a song on repeat for that long. Literally every chance I've had to blast it, I've taken it.

yay!! another fan! i highly recommend her whole album, especially "far away." i also just bought her ep off itunes tonight; listening to it now and loooooving it. there's a great tune "new york, new york, new york." worth the price for this alone.

I'm currently digging her more than Rufus I must admit.
I've seen her solo and with Rufus, and she's always great.
i prefer martha. i've seen her solo and rufus solo. rufus was such a douche the night i saw him that it made me lose all interest and respect for him. he seemed to be drunk and his voice was in really rough shape. i dunno. i find him to whine way too much. martha was phenomenal live! loooove her record.
