My vote goes to Genesis as long as it's the band led by Peter Gabriel.

All bands with their merits. I actually like Rush the least; they jumped on the prog train far too late anyway, but of course have deserved their fan base. Just don't bring Power Windows anywhere near me and we can live in peace.
ELP: moments of brilliance (think the first album, Tarkus or BSS) but even during their peak period they could be inconsistent (Trilogy). Tull: High quality stuff from 1968-1972, patchier afterwards but stuff like Heavy Horses still rocks my boat. But it is the ones who achieved transcendental, almost religious moments in their music that stand out the most for me, the pretentious fool. Yes: Peak period from 1971 to 1977; only Tales leaves me cold. Several key pieces of the genre belong to them ("Roundabout", "CTTE", "Gates Of Delirium", "Awaken"), and they're the only band out of this bunch that I've seen at concert. Professional, even sometimes funny, show all the way. "I Get Up I Get Down" and "Soon" bring me to tears and the harder parts of "CTTE" and "GOD" send shivers down my spine. Genesis: My favourite of them all. I don't give a damn if From Genesis To Revelation sounds immature (I still like it), I don't care too much for their post-Gabriel career where they alternated between good quality pop music and banal pap; it is the albums released between 1971-1974 that do it for me. They were the least skillfull players of this bunch but knew how to utilize their limited skills to the maximum effect; Steve Hackett in particular never wasted a note in anything he played. And with Gabriel they had one of the greatest frontmen of all time; someone who could alternate between various roles on stage within a single song with ease and make you believe in all of them. The closing moments of "The Musical Box" and "Supper's Ready" are among the best ever outros in the history of music; the flashing solos in "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight" are headspinning; the mellotron + guitar intro to "The Fountain Of Salmacis" is utterly beautiful, and so on, and so on. And Gabriel's vocal deliveries throughout are impeccable (with the entire "Supper's", "Knight" and "Carpet Crawlers" being my favourites). Too bad that Crimso didn't make it though, but I bet Robert Fripp would have opposed to being included in a poll like this anyway. ![]()

And after gabriel it's over. They should have changed the name. That would have led to my vote this round. But they didn't.

While I have great respect for all of these groups, I can't say I'm a die-hard of prog rock, which is funny, as all my friends are prog-rock junkies. Rush and Yes are my two faves on the list by far.
I've actually been on a big Rush kick lately. Geddy's voice is an acquired taste, to say the least. Their songs don't really go anywhere, per se, but I really love the killer guitar intros. How can you not love that intro to "Limelight?" The song itself is okay, but that intro is to die for. Plus, they seem to have a sense of humor, which is a major bonus. Alex appeared on a classic episode of Trailer Park Boys, and Geddy was on the Rick Mercer report, appeared on the "Strange Brew" and South Park soundtracks. I think the deciding factor here is that they covered TWO Buffalo Springfield tunes on that album of covers. Yes has always been a favorite. I even got to see them live a few years ago. The only thing is that they, like Fleetwood Mac, have had so many incarnations, some better than others, that it's really hard to say that "this was the greatest prog band," as there were several bands in there, with only Chris Squire being the constant. The "classic" version, IMO, had a lot of heart. Their songs actually said something meaningful and their abilities as musicians were second-to-none. Genesis is in a similar boat with Yes. On the one hand, there was "Lamb Lies Down...," but on the other was "Invisible Touch." Their music itself was interesting. Their lyrics generally do little for me, but I will say their delivery is cool (i.e. "I Know What I Like"). ELP. I've never been a big ELP fan. I know, I'm supposed to really like them, but they've just never done it for me. Jethro Tull. Well, there's the obvious Fleetwood Mac connection with Bob Welch and Glen Cornick forming Paris. That having been said, I'm still only 50/50 on the Tull. Now, the obvious question: Where are the Moody Blues?
