My partner's mother is a bit of a bitch and was a major reason all three of her kids move out of the state, but I appreciate that we both have married parents who accept our relationship. They are family to us both.

My ex's mother adored me. In fact, on her deathbed, she requested me - alone. While holding her hand and at her insistence, I promised I would take of her child even though we soon ended after that. I have kept that promise to this day. That is how wonderful she was. The other in laws have been okay, but it really is hard not to like me

Let's see...
My mother is horribly, horribly prejudiced against just about everyone...blacks, gays, she doesn't need much of a reason. She's also extremely adept at playing mind games (inducing guilt trips, etc). She's never forgiven me for leaving home. My mother's mother is a pill-popping alcoholic who is now in a nursing home suffering from dementia. She regularly sneaks booze into the home and gets drunk. I haven't liked her since I was about 9 years old, when I discovered just what a drunken, abusive wretch she is. ![]() My mother's sister is a moderately retarded (though I'm convinced she plays it up) sociopath. Nobody really likes her. Fortunately, she has no children. My older brother is an uber-conservative Southern Baptist minister who I'm sure would disown me if he knew I was gay (and I'm sure he at least suspects it). I try to avoid him the one or two times a year I have to be in the same room with him. His wife is tolerable, but I think when the chips are down, she's just as bigoted as he is. My younger brother is kind of a slacker, although he's probably the smartest one of the bunch (except for yours truly, of course). He dropped out of high school and now works in a cigarette store and still lives with our parents. My dad is tolerable. When I was little, he had a horrible temper but has mellowed out considerably over the years. He's still terribly narrow-minded, though. My dad's dad is in his 80s and is the source of endless amusement for me because he's a Bush-hating Democrat who subscribes to commie rags (I saw The Progressive and The Nation on his coffee table). It drives my parents nuts...my dad is a Bill O'Reilly fan. My dad's mom, sadly, suffered a stroke 10 years ago and hasn't spoken a word since. Her and my dad's dad are the only relatives that I really like, but they're getting up in years and aren't in good health. My dad's brother and his wife are both borderline alcoholics who seem to have gotten away with bankruptcy fraud. The wife is tolerable, but she's not terribly smart. Sadly, they have bred. So as you can see, just about my whole family pretty much sucks, and I dread this time of year, because I have to drive 6 hours to see them, and am ready to chew my arms and legs off to get away after 45 minutes. ![]() |

Your grandfather sounds like a riot, though. He must be quite the lefty if he subscribes to The Nation.

My great-grandfather was an Irishman who was descended from the Huguenots. He moved to Canada with his wife and children. They then moved to San Pedro in the early 1900's and lived on Point Fermin. My grandmother married and had three kids, the middle one was my dad. My great aunt was part of early 30's Hollywood heyday. She was a wigmaker and worked on movie sets. The interesting thing was that she was married to a drag performer by the name of Coleman Richards, whose nickname was Scudder. Scudder and my great aunt Mary had a baby. However, when their baby was about four, Scudder decided to ditch the whole family and go back to San Francisco to pursue his gay old time. My great aunt was so in love with him, that she showed up on my grandma's door step with her son and promptly left him there. My grandma officially adopted her nephew Robin, who became my uncle. My grandfather killed himself with a hand gun when my father was 18. My father never got over that to this day. My father joined the navy and was stationed at the China Lake Naval base when he met a young lady by the name of Juanita McCreary. He was smitten with her, but she wouldn't give him the time of day. However, her young sister was available, so my dad took a shot at it. My mother was 13 years old when she started dating my father who was 21 at the time. Seems shocking now, but I guess it was common back then. My mother was an early bloomer and quite a tall lass, so I guess it was no biggie. Besides, this was the early 50's when "nothing happened" and my maternal grandfather was a sheriff's deputy, so I assuming everything was Ozzie and Harriet outta control. Anyways, my parents eventually married and supposedly started their idyllic life, which all a big pipedream anyway. My family was Ozzie and Harriet meets The Ice Storm, minus the Key Club parties. In other words, white bread boring. My parents divorced when I was 13 and moved on. So, I didn't really have all that family stuff like my older brothers did. All those years have passed and this is what I'm stuck with today. My father is a borderline xenophobe who is still married to his second wife who forced my father to kick me out of the house when I was 19 years old. He lives in the middle of nowhere in the Trinity National Forest in a town of 105 people. He expects me to call every Father's Day and Christmas and has basically "forgotten" everything that happened during my time growing up. My mother remarried to a man who ruined her life. He got caught up in the Elder Bush recession and never got back to work. They were forced to sell their house and decided to move to his family's town to start anew. After moving, my mother was cleaning house and discovered an odd video tape. The tape was her husband's mistress from back in California masturbating. Nice.... My mother put the tape back, called her sister to arrange to move in with her in No. California, transferred all the money she and her husband had into a new bank account and two weeks later told the mofo she was leaving that day never to see him again. She now lives in Tennessee waiting to retire and move back to California. My oldest brother married very early, verbally abused his wife and had two children. After divorcing, he tried dating for awhile, eventually remarrying in 2003. He's a bitter man (Capricorn) who is now trying his hand at real estate. While at my third oldest brother's second wedding in 2003, my nephew dropped the bomb on my oldest brother letting him know that he had a four month old grandson. My nephew was so afraid of my brother, that he hid the entire pregnancy and birth from his father. My second oldest brother joined the navy in the early 80's for the education opportunity. He married his high school sweetheart out of guilt and nagging. They had two kids and stuck it out for almost 20 years. They had fallen out of love a long time ago, so my brother had enough and ditched his wife and moved to Illinois to marry another woman. My brother is close enough to my mother to visit her. I was talking to my mother recently on the phone and she put my brother on the phone. He deadpanned, "Why don't you ever call me?" My response- "How can I call you if you've never given me your phone number. My telephone number has been the same number for the last eleven years." This is the typical disfunction of my white bread family. My third oldest brother married a succubus. They had two children and then he finally got the nerve to divorce her. He is a sheriff's deputy in an extremely conservative part of So Cal. He recently remarried and converted to Catholicism. At his wedding, his bride (who I had never met or even talked to) had someone come out and get me and dragged me into the bridal chamber just before the ceremony. She "had" to meet me and told me that even though my brother's first wife was a hag, she was not- and wanted me to be a part of all their get-togethers and so on. I haven't heard from either one of them since. My sister was adopted because my mother wanted a doll to play with. In the late sixties early 70's, there was a baby bust. If one wanted to adopt, infants and toddlers were generally not available. Since my mother already had four children, she had to choose from children from bad homes. The first day my sister moved in she stole jewelry from my mom's dresser and lied about it- all at the precocious age of five. Needless to say, my sister's life was pretty ****ed up. After a lot of drama and issues (years have gone by), my sister started dating a guy eight years younger than her. He stood by her while she went in and out of mental hospitals and therapy, etc. She got pregnant. She had been pregnant several times before with other people, but aborted every time. This time, her boyfriend was a devout catholic and convinced her to marry her and keep the baby. They had two more children together and then broke up. She lives in Kansas on her own with her three children. Her pious husband is shacking up with some chick in San Diego. Do I talk to any of these people??? You have got to be kidding me. I love my mother and father and my siblings are okay. However, none of them know anything about me. They only know me from 1981, frozen in time forever. So, my friends are my real family. |
