In the beginning there was Genesis - and for millions of followers around the world it appears that another chapter is about to be written in the history of one of Britain's greatest rock groups.
The suggestion that the progressive band Genesis may get back together has caused a wave of excitement among fans who have been praying for a reunion for the past seven years. A brief comment made by Phil Collins, the former Genesis drummer, singer and songwriter, who suggested that the band may reform, has fuelled rumours that have been circulating in the music industry for months. Shortly before going on stage in Tel Aviv this week Collins, who left the group in 1996 to pursue a solo career, said he would "be open to a reunion" of the band. The 54-year-old performer, who is the most prominent international music star to perform in Israel since the start of a Palestinian uprising more than five years ago, gave hope to the band's legion of fans when he confirmed: "There's a possibility. I'm open for it." For months there have been rumours that, behind the scenes, moves were being made to get the group, which formed in 1967 and enjoyed 30 years of hits before disbanding in 1998, back together again for at least one performance. "I'm happy to sit behind the drums and let Peter [Gabriel] be the singer. If [a reunion] happens, I'll be there. If it does not happen ... it would just be because there are too many things in the way," said Collins during his "First Final Farewell Tour" in Israel. He says he plans to stop touring "soon" in order to spend more time with his family. Although no official plans for a reunion have been announced, Collins said he was still in touch with all of the former Genesis members. "We're all still good friends. We spent like 30 or 25 years of our life in the same office," said Collins, who sought to quash any suggestion of animosity between members of the band. "Just because we don't play in the same band any more doesn't mean we don't see each other and enjoy each other's company," added the performer, who has previously said that he would play in a band with Peter Gabriel "in a second" if he was asked. Genesis was born out of the merger of two groups created by Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks along with Michael Rutherford and Anthony Phillips, who were all pupils at Charterhouse School near Godalming in Surrey, in 1965. However, it was not until 1967, under the guidance of the producer Jonathan King, that they first recorded under the name Genesis. Although Phil Collins did not join the band until 1970, he is their best known drummer, and took over as the lead singer when Peter Gabriel left the group for a solo career in 1975. After a reshuffle of band members they finally called it quits in 1998. However, in recent months Peter Gabriel and the guitarist Steve Hackett, who joined the group about the same time as Collins, have hinted at the possibility of a reunion. "A reunion, I think, is on the cards at some point," said Hackett in an interview with an American magazine last month. "I just don't know exactly when it's going to happen. I haven't met the guys and discussed it , but I think the time is getting close." On a talk show in the United States last month, Gabriel said that a meeting with former band members to discuss a joint project was due to take place in the near future.

I thought I had heard that Peter Gabriel wasn't interested, so this is good news. Do you happen to know what talk show he was on? I watched part of a little video one of his daughters made. His website has a lot of media material on it. I am going to go listen to "Supper's Ready" now. p.s. if you are into Genesis, then I wonder if you have that box set that contains the only (official) live recorded performance of The Lamb?

They did do this once before, in 1982 for one of Gabriel's benefits, although Hackett was replaced by Genesis' usual touring guitarist Daryl Stuermer.
For years Peter has actually said in interviews that he wouldn't necessarily want to go back to his musical childhood or something like that. Interesting to see that he's been slowly changing his mind though. I wonder if he still would like to wear those old costumes and masks. ![]()

Pfft. Gabriel solo has always been as successful in terms of sales as whatever the Gabriel-era Genesis came up with, and in some cases even more successful; the albums from the first one to The Lamb never had any high hopes of attracting as much chart success in the States as So did. And he's still been touring throughout the world for huge arenas; I don't really believe that a reunion of Genesis of 1971-1974 would really be any more successful. The only people who would go to see that are old nostalgics and "spotty student types" like yours truly.
If they wanted to cash in on a larger scale, they'd just get Banks, Rutherford and Collins together again.

I actually doubt that it will happen! I know Steve Hackett is open to that idea, I also doubt that he would have ever left the band, if they were just touring!
But I can totally see them on a reunion tour with Hackett and Collins (and of course Daryl Stuermer and Chester Thompson wont say not to that) But I can't see them with Gabriel on a tour, maybe for a single concert! Phil said: "If it doesn't happen, it would just be because there are too many things in the way." And that's how it usualy is with Gabriel! A whole bunch of soundboards were "discovered" a while ago, but Nick Davis said that it is much easier for bootlegs after 1976 to get released than the Gabriel-era stuff! It seems like he is kind of a blocker of that project so I doubt to see a full 5 piece reunion for a tour! ![]() Quote:

That's what I thought at first too, because the show was called "Six Of The Best": Gabriel, Collins, Rutherford, Banks, Stuermer & Thompson, so there's no space left for poor Steve
But this is a fan describtion from a (I think it was fade003) bootleg: "As the band returned for the first encore, a wave of cheering swept though the crowd at the sudden realisation of a new face on stage: Hackett had come out to complete the lineup for the encores!" You really have to listen to the Fade version, because this one is like the only bootleg of that show which you can enjoy listening to: Title: Fade 003 (Fade 003) Date: 02-Oct-1982 Venue: Concert Bowl, Milton Keynes Country: England Type Audience Quality: A- Media: 2CD-R Track # Track Name Track Length 1.1 Introduction By Jonathan King 01:55 1.2 Back In NYC 07:40 1.3 Dancing With The Moonlit Knight (Intro) 01:41 1.4 Carpet Crawlers 05:08 1.5 Greeting By Peter Gabriel 01:44 1.6 Firth Of Fifth 09:40 1.7 The Musical Box 12:29 1.8 Solsbury Hill 05:20 1.9 Turn It On Again 06:53 1.10 The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 07:41 1.11 Fly On A Windshield 02:57 1.12 Broadway Melody Of 1974 01:38 1.13 In The Cage 08:20 2.1 Supper's Ready 30:05 2.2 I Know What I Like 12:37 2.3 The Knife 05:52
