Alt-country fans?

trackaghost · #1 09-28-2005, 04:07 PM

Gerald, Hayley and I, can't be the only fans of alt-country on this board can we?

I worship these bands/artists:

Wilco

Richmond Fontaine

Marah

To name but a few. Any other fans out there?

Mari · #2 09-28-2005, 04:12 PM

well, Ryan Adams and Lucinda Williams, I love those two. Especially Lucinda!
Heard a few things from the other bands you mentioned, guess I just haven't had the time to delve into those yet

I don't know what would fall under that title, there's other artists who fall under 'more than just country' that I adore, like Emmylou Harris.

Edit, since we've agreed they're the Godfathers, I'm adding Neil Young and Gram Parsons to my list of favorites.

I'm a big fan of Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, some Steve Earle, Gram Parsons, and Neil Young if he counts.

Gram Parsons, the Godfather of alt-country! love it.

If it wasn't for the Gram Parsons tribute Return To The Grieveous Angel, I wouldn't have gotten into Lucinda Williams, or the Cowboy Junkies, and look who's there too: Ryan Adams.. etc etc That's one excellent compilation.

I love it too! Wilco are on there as well. Oh and Sheryl, Emmylou and Steve Earle. Elvis Costello's version of Sleepless Nights is gorgeous too.

and Chrissie Hynde doing 'She', SO good. I think this is one of my top ten favorite albums

Ok. Wilco, Jayhawks.. what albums would you recommend?

hayley · #9 09-28-2005, 04:35 PM

Mmm, alt-country!

I'm going with my best friend to see Lu here in Chicago on Saturday, to celebrate my birthday. I haven't seen her live in a couple of years and I am so damned excited.

If you love Gram, run, don't walk to buy yourself some Jayhawks albums.
You NEED Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow The Green Grass.

If you're feeling a little more adventurous then Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Being There are the Wilco albums to buy.

Yay! I'm so glad you're into all the Americana stuff too

No, it's my favorite type of music.

I love all the artists you've mentioned, and others like Patty Griffin, Allison Moorer, Steve Earle, Emmylou, Neko Case, Gillian Welch . . . I could go on and on. Right now, I'm on a Ryan Adams kick. I've had Cold Roses and Jacksonville City Nights on repeat for the last two days.

I will! I can't wait! Happy birthday to me, etc.

I'm with Mikki on her choices! Especially Patty Griffin & Neko.

I love everything Sharon mentioned plus Earle, and Ray Wylie "screw you I'm from Texas, I'm from Texas screw you" -Hubbard.

Lately i'm into alt.countryrock:

Son Volt
Drive-by-Truckers....Wow that's friggin spectacular.

and older ones like....

Golden Smog
Any Wilco

and alt country spin-off lofi singersongwriters-rock like Grant Hart's Nova Mob. Their album The last days of Pompei is still something else. Sounds like ****, but keeps the blood pumping....everywhere.

By the way, The best lofi-album I've heard the last couple of years is something that totally slipped to my attention:

Dougal Reed's 2001 integral cover of Rumours. Thanks to Mari I'm hooked.

Mari, you can buy Marah's Kids In Philly blind. Top.
