Default Sumatra-Andaman EQ MP3

They finally released the EQ audio file (in MP3 format).

There were various hydroacoustic sensors throughout the Indian Ocean that picked up these T-waves (sound waves) that followed the initial seismic waves (P-waves & S-waves).

In effect, you're hearing the 750-mile length of fault "unzip" from south to north at almost 6,000 miles per hour. The rupture propagated along the major plate boundary in the Sunda Trench in two distinct phases.

Load this in Winamp & then turn up the volume. It is EERIE.

Very scary - it seemingly lasts a long time as well. For some reason I thought EQ's were shorter than 2:20 in duration. Thanks for posting David!!!!!!

that is simultaneously the coolest and most disturbing thing i've ever heard. my subwoofer is hanging off the side of my desk and the whole thing was shaking, kind of weirded me out. i'll take hurricanes over earthquakes any day.

thanks for posting that, very cool/disturbing.

Thats incredible, especially when you consider the mic's were so far away...

I HEARD my little earthquake and it was only a 4.8, but I SWEAR I could hear a rumble

this:

is just mind boggling, to think that a 750 mile crack could "unzip" at that speed....literally no escape just think if that happened on land...

Most earthquakes are far shorter than 2 minutes in duration. That's why most earthquakes are thousands of times smaller than the December 26 quake. Remember, magnitude is related to the length of rupture along the fault. The vast majority of earthquakes don't rupture for 750 miles, which is why they aren't M9.0+ in size.

The good news is that there is no known fault that long in the continental United States.

The bad news is that there are huge subduction zone faults just offshore of North, Central & South America: one runs from Northern California to Vancouver Island BC, another one runs along Mexico's & Central America's western coastline, & another one runs in the Atlantic north of South America. There's also a subduction zone off the west coast of South America. This fault last ruptured in 1960, which created the biggest quake on record: M9.5

Apparently these hydroacoustic mics pick up stuff like smaller earthquakes & icebergs breaking off from thousands of miles away. They were developed & implemented to listen for nuclear testing.

Most of the earthquakes I've experienced also involved sound. One of them sounded exactly like a train, I could hear it coming before the shaking actually started and then I could feel my building start to sway. Another one was more like a loud bang or explosion.

my mom felt the Coalinga earthquake in the 80's and she said it sounded like a train coming and when it hit the building, it was as though a train hit..
she was also in the big one that hit the Bay Bridge/collapsed the Nimitz freeway (forget the name of that one--senior moment!) she said the oak tree outside her apartment was buckling so bad it looked like a weeping willow in a Disney cartoon

I felt the Livermore one in the early 80's, and that one had no sound but my entire house shifted left/right/left/right...it was WEIRD

We had one hit here (the epicenter was in northern Alabama) - it sounded like a train and it through me out of bed. Scary stuff!

its weird how blase you get about natural hazzards that occur in your own area but how spooked you get about hazzards you arent used to...for instance, I am pretty blase about earthquakes but the idea of a tornado scares me...
I would not want to die a watery death either, I dont know why but drowning is a big fear. Also Sharks...in fact, anything with sharp pointy teeth bothers me!

Did anybody see that HUMUNGOUS Kodiak Grizzly bear head that made the email rounds? My mom says that Kodiaks are really truly like that and Alaska has numerous stuffed Kodiak bears as trophies....
this picture gave me the chills:

and, when you hunt them, you have to wait until they are like 20 yards in front of you before you shoot. I would be too scared!!!!!!

compare the HEADS, the HUMAN head and the BEAR head. its too too weird
I believe they are bigger than Polar Bears, they are the LARGEST freakin bears on the planet...they stand 14 ft tall (thats taller than yer house folks!) and to give you a perspective of another large item, that catfish that fed a whole village (see the Holy MOLY, fish feeds whole village thread) was 9 FT LONG!

EDIT: Im not sure if the "14ft tall" stat is correct. I tried to find confirmation, but the closest I could find was 10ft....here's the link

in any event, they are certainly the largest living land carnivores and certainly worthy of our R.E.S.P.E.C.T.........
