Default Christine VS Stevie? NOT!!

ONe of the things that's always amazed me about Christine is that in every interview I've ever seen of her, she never once has seemed to have any jealousy towards Stevie in anyway. If anything they were the best of friends. The fact that she wasn't threatned by Stevie's status with the media or fans says a tremendous amout about her character in my opinion. I know this probably seems obvious to most , but I though I'd throw it out there.

I think they are such different characters. Christine who called one her own songs "a perky little ditty" and Stevie who dedicated one of her own songs to "the Indian spirits". People with such different characters tend to either hate each other on sight or become close friends. Christine and Stevie became close friends. I think of all the current band Stevie misses Chris more than the others - possibly because the male/female balance has altered and at the moment testosterone holds sway and she misses her ally.

Stevie has always said she regards Chris as the big sister she never had and I think Christine feels like that too.

I think also Christine regards herself (sorry regarded herself) as part of the rhythm section and as such they were doing different things within the band.

Christine is big enough and graceful enough to accept Stevie and give her the stage. Way to go Chris!

Gail

This is from a Christine interview from back in 1982 that I posted several weeks ago.

"I bring up the view of Mac oft perpetrated that says a writer/performer as talented as Christine McVie must find it galling to be upstaged by a young Stevie Nicks running around and changing frocks all the time.

“Yeah, well she certainly does that! Believe me, I would hate to run around onstage changing clothes every five minutes and playing tambourines and things,” here her voice hints ever so slightly at claws extending in a feline manner. “I would hate to be in her shoes. I’m very happy, thank you, standing behind the keyboards. I’m a musician, y’know? I’m more a musician band member than a frontline….”, and her voice trails off for a second, the short silence making its own point.

“There’s no competition, In fact, she’s jealous of me because I can play keyboards better than her”.

I always find it amusing that Stevie fans would think that Chris was jealous of Stevie. What is there to be jealous of? As Gail said, they didn't compete against each other because they were so different. I think she took a lot of pride in what she contributed to the band. She and Stevie each had a job to do in Fleetwood Mac. I'll bet she got tired of being asked it though.

People assume Christine is jealous because Stevie gets more attention.
It does happen. Look at Blondie, the guys in the band couldn't handle that Debbie Harry was getting more attention than them.
I can't imagine Christine was ever jealous, rather bemused by it all. I think she probably got more annoyed about being asked about it all the time.

The other thing is Stevie WANTED to be a rock star. Christine just sort of fell into things. Her joining Chicken Shack and Fleetwood Mac were both very casual things. With the Shack, she was just playing with her friends. With the Mac, she was just helping them out, while Danny and Jeremy developed confidence. But, that tour got so crazy that by the time it was over, she had become a critical member of the group. It could argued that Christine never offically joined the band, it just sort of happened. So for me, that's the difference. Christine got into music as a social outlet, while Stevie definately wanted to be a rock star. Hence why I don't think there's been that much competition between them.

That's pretty much it. Back for the Kiln House tour, Christine was originally intended to pretty much just be playing a role similar to the one that Brett Tuggle now fills; play keyboards and fill out the sound. And, since she was an established "celebrity" in her own right, they had her sing lead on a few songs, in reality, because they needed her to...and because neither Jeremy nor Danny were any good at being the emcee of the show, Christine even did THAT right from the get-go. By the end of the tour, she was pretty much LEADING the band (against her own better judgement). By the time Jeremy left, Christine was an integral piece of the Fleetwood Mac puzzle.

And I will always wonder if she would have stepped out gracefully if Jeremy hadn't left them in a lurch! Am I the only one that thinks maybe she would have? John's answer to my question in the Q&A was less than helpful LOL. Speculate, for heaven's sake! And since Chris' Q&A has never seen the light of day, I suppose I'll never hear her view on it either....

Oh, I kind of think along those lines, too...but, then at that time, she & John were close, so she may have stuck around just to be near him...and they really had started to gel as a band with her in there. So, I think it would've been a tough decision on her part, either way.

All true. It boggles my mind that in all these years, no interviewer has ever (to my knowledge) asked her that question.

Lis,

Was that the question you asked her in the Q & A?

I wouldn't hold my breath on that. But, there's no harm in asking her. Maybe it'll give her a push to finish the Q & A on her website.

That was a good question, by the way.

I'd die if she does bite! For the love of a songbird, I haven't wished her a happy birthday! Is it too late?

No, it's not too late. Her birthday is on July 12th.

Oh, I know her birthday. I meant if it was too late to be sent in through the website. What was that again?
