Robert will be away for the night. I absolutely must see you. I am desperate, &, if you don't come, I won't answer for the consequences. Don't drive up. Leslie.

Ah, Kane. That's probably my favourite line from that film.

Do I get a prize for knowing the others are from The Letter, Gaslight, Rebecca (one of my favourite ever films!) and Vertigo?
Well?

Omigosh, I was trying to think of one from The Letter! (which I love). Which one is it?
Oh - it's the one that says "Leslie"??

Dear Clarice, I have followed with enthusiasm the course of your disgrace and public shaming. My own never bothered me except for the inconvenience of being incarcerated, but you may lack perspective. In our discussions down in the dungeon it was apparent to me that your father, the dead night watchman, figures largely in your value system. I think your success in putting an end to Jame Gumb's career as a couturier pleased you most because you could imagine your father being pleased. But now, alas, you're in bad odour with the FBI. Do you imagine your daddy being shamed by your disgrace? Do you see him in his plain pine box crushed by your failure; a sorry, petty end of a promising career? What is worst about this humiliation Clarice? Is it how your failure will reflect on your mommy and daddy? Is your worst fear that people will now and forever believe they were indeed just good old trailer camp tornado bait white trash and that perhaps you are too? By the way I couldn't help noticing on the FBI's rather dull public website that I have been hoisted from the Bureau's archives of the common criminal and elevated to the more prestigious 10 Most Wanted list. Is this coincidence, or are you back on the case? If so, goody goody, cause I need to come out of retirement and return to public life. I imagine you sitting in a dark basement room bent over papers and computer screens. Is that accurate? Please tell me truly, Special Agent Starling. Regards, your old pal Hannibal Lecter, M.D. P.S. Clearly this new assignment is not your choice rather I suppose it is a part of the bargain but you accepted it Clarice. Your job is to craft my doom. So I am not sure how well I should wish you but I'm sure we'll have a lot of fun. Tata, H.

I feel like I did, but perhaps just some of it? Maybe for class? I guess not well enough. I don't watch movies without Bette Davis, Isabelle Adjani, or Parker Posey in them.... JK - but I don't find the actors in Rebecca very compelling...

Take it back! It has Laurence Olivier (looking completely dashing) and Joan Fontaine AND your favourite (hehe) George Sanders.
You must give it a try because YOU WILL LOVE IT!

I have always wanted to play Mrs. Danvers on stage

"They were all jealous, all mad for her, . . . [Yet] she did not mind, it was like a game to her. . . Why don't you go? ... He doesn't want you, he never did. He can't forget her... It's you who ought to be dead, not Mrs. de Winter . . . There's not much for you to live for . . . Why don't you jump now and have done with it?"

I've watched some of it. I don't like Olivier. Joan was okay, a bit understated yet one faced. Sorry, again. If you send it to me, I'll watch it all.... I enjoyed thinking about how Olivia DeHavilland and JF are sisters, who never spoke to each other, though....

One of the most well-done DVD packages of the past few years was the Criterion issue of "Rebecca": a two-DVD set with beautiful graphical design throughout the case & the onscreen menu, excellent essays by Robin Wood & George Turner, an absolutely perfect & dazzling restoration, & loads of extras (commentary, music & effects tracks, screen/hair/makeup/costume tests with a bunch of stars, interviews with stars, production photos & correspondence, deleted scene script excerpt, Du Maurier essay, 1940 Oscar footage, trailer, THREE radio shows from 1938, 1941 & 1950).

What a FANTASTIC package it was. I got my copy a few years back & it's a real treasure.
