Garbo,Stevie 's favorite film actress and muse for several songs was able to maintain her aura of mystery in life and beyond by giving away very little information about her private life and retired from films after having been a huge international film star while in her mid 30s.Stevie has said she would like to emulate some of that mystery and there was a time when I believe she did.Now with endless touring with no new album to promote and seeming to join the summer geezerfest of has been 1970s bands ,many of which have no record contract and really need the money, Stevie seems to be destroying whatever aura of mystery remains. She does not have to do this! She still has a major label record contract and really does not need the money.Really I think this behavior is tarnishing her legacy.I hope and pray she comes to her senses soon.

Could it be that she's in a post-Klonopin euphoria and she's trying to catch up for the lost time? Could she be in a post-FM mania, having just too much fun doing rock-n-roll? I think so. Go Stevie!

Mystery? I've never been able to see Stevie - I'm too young. I'd bet theres a lot of people in the same situation, its wonderful that Stevie is still out there, putting on a good show and making her fans happy. I'd love her to release new material but I'd also be ecstatic if there was a possibility she'd tour without new material in this country. Forget mystery, enjoy the show!

Retiring early to preserve ones mystery is a rather empty measure that can only deprive the world of an artist's great work.
If Alfred Hitchcock had retired in his thirties, we would never have had any of the movies that he made after the 1930's. Rebecca, Lifeboat, Rope, Notorious, Rear Window, North by Northwest, Vertigo, Psycho, The Birds, Marnie, Frenzy. They would never have existed. But we would have preserved the Hitchcock mystique. What a great trade-off. Not. As for Greta herself, if she had not retired, she could have had the part of Death in Orpheus. Coincidentally, directed by Jean Cocteau, the man who made Stevie's beloved Beauty and the Beast. |

I wasn't neccesarily suggesting that Stevie should have retired early like Greta did.It is more that she is overexposing herself with interminable touring.I still think she has something to say through her music and regret she is not concentrating on that .I 'm aware that there are artists that produce great work in their 3rd act.Emmylou Harrris's "Red Dirt Girl' and 'Stumble into Grace" are two good examples and who'd have thought Loretta Lynn would pull off the striking "Van Lear Rose' at almost 70 years old.On the other hand there was Joan Crawford's "Trog' and 'Berserk' and Mae West's "Myra Breckenridge ' and "Sextette'.

Wow, it really shocks me just how demanding some people can be and I have to put my two cents in here. I mean for God's sakes the woman is 57 years old and has been touring the world for the past two years, not to mention the physical and emotional difficulties she's encountered throughout her life. What do you people want from her? Just be happy she is still around. Are you saying you'd rather her retire and hang up her boots and not hear anything about her until the day she dies? Is that the "mystery" you are looking for?
I am grateful for anything she puts out it really upsets me that people have the nerve to complain about her and give her so much ****. If you truly love and respect her let her be her own person and do what she wants to do. Be happy with what she gives us. When and if it is time for her to put out new material she will when SHE IS READY. If she wants to incorporate less popular songs in her set list she will when she is ready. It just pains me to hear someone who is a fan say something like "Really I think this behavior is tarnishing her legacy". I mean everyone is entitled to their opinion so you are entitled to yours but I completely disagree. Oh and P.S. I think Greta would say "Stevie, live for yourself not for anyone else. People will always want things from you and you can never please everyone so do what's in your heart". |

Aside from NOT putting out any new music... Is it really that different then through the 80's??
Tours FM-79/80 SN-81 FM-82 SN-83 SN-86 FM-87/88 SN-89 FM-90 SN-91 And since she has no albums to promote... probably a good thing to get back out on the road - to keep her in the minds of the population that she's still out there (not that anyone that pays attention to music wouldn't know that)... Plus it's fairly short term touring -if she sticks to the 25 dates solo and 10 with Don - so I don't see there being a problem with her being out on the road at all... If I have to make a demand... It would be - COME TO BLOODY CANADA! ![]() Last edited by MacMan; 05-24-2005 at 02:46 PM.. |

If someone hates music that much that they think that artists should hang it up at 50 then that is a shame.
These artists coming around is so great. We don't get that many albums and so touring is our only connection!! And it's great. I hope she never stops!!!!

Greta Garbo was able to keep her mystery mostly because mystery was an added value to stars of golden age of Cinema. Personally I admire more actresses like Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn who lived their time fully and gave great performances at any age.
About Stevie, the fact she keeps touring confirms me her great vitality, talent and energy, it makes me admire her even more. It seems she's more than happy doing it, and that's the important thing for me. On the other side, if Britney Spears decided to retire to raise her child and to not perform or make new records for the next 30 years at least, I would send her a big thank you card. Romy

Ooh I'll send a card also. But instead of preserving her mystery, Britney will be preserving her trash-skankery.

A wise woman, that Greta. I agree entirely, and I think mystery has a lot more to do with not revealing every single detail of your personal, romantic, emotional, physical, mental, and gynecological life. It's why people whose careers, if they can be called that, that are based on exposure rarely endure--after awile all that shock value disappears, and then what? I think Stevie has maintained her own aura quite well. No one is quite sure what makes her tick. And I don't think she, by still being out in the spotlight even though the casual fans may be over her, is doing anything unforgivable. A number of musicians from the Sixites and Seventies are still performing, and doing quite well.Just my opinion, of course, but I do think Stevie has always carried herself with grace, even during her less-than-graceful moments. (Oh, and I'm new obviously, in case you were scratching your head wondering who I was! )

I don't know about the mystery thing, but I definitely agree with BombaySapphires that she should stop touring and put some new music out. That's not being ungrateful -- it's just expressing a wish. If Stevie's having fun, great, but I for one have heard enough live versions of "Stand Back" in the past few years to last me through the decade at least.
![]() It's frustrating to me that although she is writing great songs again, she records at the pace of a snail. ![]() Last edited by blinker12; 05-26-2005 at 04:10 AM.. |

Thanks Blinker.I don't know how someone could discern that I' hate music' from this thread particularly since I was wishing for new music. But I guess around here if you appear to be critical of Ms. Nicks on any level you may be in for a drubbing . I think it goes back to the Empress's new clothes analogy I made in an earlier thread. That mindset seems to rule on this forum.

Seriously though... even if she takes her time recording new albums and what not, at least she is still working regardless.. whether it be on tour or in the studio... TISL was sort of a masterpiece for her, but then only two short years later, she came out with 10 new songs for Say You Will, which is basically another studio album for her.. I honestly believe had it not been for the 2004 leg of the SYW tour, she would be releasing something this year... i think her next album has been pushed back a bit because of that and I think she's touring this year basically just for fun... i'm sure after it's all over, she'll go back into the studio to record the next album for a spring/summer 2006 release.. what else would she do? ![]() |
