Does anyone else LOVE this song as much as I do??
I have always believed that Stevie wrote it and not Tom Petty- Seems so much more her style... Just a question-any one have other thoughts?? ~~eclipse~~ ps-And she seems so happy singing it!!

I, too, think La Nicks penned it or at least had something to do with it. I have absoluely NOTHING to base that on though
and as Diss. pointed out, the song appears to have been written and recorded before Stevie and Tom - so I am probably wrong - oh well ![]() |

I love it, especially as it was performed on the Bella Donna tour video. That moment when she sings "who woulda thought that you'd fall for his line? All of a sudden it's me on the outside". So funny. She seems to giggle when she sings it, maybe because she just realized she sang it from a male or lesbian perspective. Cracks me up!
But I'm gonna go with Tom Petty being the writer. |

I think "I Need to Know" is a great, ferocious song -- classic Tom Petty & classic American pop-rock -- but it was on the Heartbreakers' 2nd album back in early 1978, before Stevie & Tom even met. But Stevie did used to say that this album ("You're Gonna Get It") was one of her favorites & she used to practice ballet to it, back in her '78 Russian ballerina days, when she was on that kick. As much as I love the song, Stevie has done it so much that it's worn out. As big a fan as Stevie says she is of Tom Petty, it's weird that she has covered so few songs of his live. There are dozens of classic Petty songs that would make (or would have made) excellent Stevie Nicks material to perform. I've always wanted to hear her play "What Are You Doing in My Life," but she never did that one, despite the fact that she must certainly know it.

I like the song very much, but prefer the Petty version. I enjoyed Stevie's performance of it up to a point, but my beef is that she has way too many rocking songs of her own and there's no need for her to do covers. It makes no sense to me that she chooses to include this in every solo setlist.

I like it back in 81. I definately do not think she wrote it. I just do not like Stevie covering other peoples songs. I think she does best with her own. I had a friend who thought she should be the only singer in FMAC. Can you imagine her doing You Make Loving Fun

I never thought Stevie wrote it, but I really prefer her version to Tom Petty's. In fact, I don't even like his that much! It was her version that made me love the song. If I ever see her live, I definitely want her to do that one.
