Default Bush calls for end of racism

Bush calls for end of racism

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush, whose relationship with black lawmakers has been strained over the last four years, told black leaders Tuesday that the United States can not carry freedom abroad while holding "the baggage of bigotry" at home.

Bush welcomed black leaders to the East Room of the White House to celebrate black history month.

"Success of freedom on the home front is critical to its success in foreign lands," Bush said. "As I said in my inaugural address, we cannot carry the message of freedom and the baggage of bigotry at the same time."

Bush noted legislation he signed in 2003 to create the National Museum of African American History and Culture within the Smithsonian Institution. The president and his wife, Laura, made a contribution, for an undisclosed amount, to construction of the museum.

"It's important that our children know that there was a time in their nation's history when one in every seven human beings was the property of another," he said, adding that bigotry and discrimination did not end with slavery.

"Americans were still barred by law from hotels and restaurants, made to drink from separate water fountains, forced to sit in the back of a bus -- all because of the color of their skin. We need to teach them about the heroes of the civil rights movement, who by their courage and dignity forced America to confront the central defect of our founding."

Those who attended the event included Dorothy Height, 92, who spent 30 years as the president of the National Council of Negro Women; members of the original Tuskegee Airmen, a group of minority pilots who excelled in the era of Jim Crow; Frederick Douglas IV, great-great-grandson of the famed abolitionist, and actress Cicely Tyson.

Last month, Bush met with the Congressional Black Caucus, which asked Bush to adopt its agenda for closing racial disparities.

Bush has met three times with the caucus since taking office.

I guess this applies only if you are wealthy enough to afford you own medical care and education

I mean does he really think his policies help the poor, which sadly includes a significant number of minorities

I mean really Sadly, the minorities care more about religious control over people they are taught to hate than to care that these same people are cutting the very benefits that are there to help them try and get out of poverty and remain alive via health care But - thank goodness fags can't marry

the laugh, That is the second funniest thing I have seen in less than 24 hours, Nothing can top the asshat Brian "The Video Vigilante" Bates being arrested for 'pandering and prostitution' in OKC...

Hey Maury Poor-bitch one of yer regular guests on yer "fine TV show" (Hardy-har-har) finally found out the meaning of "calling a kettle black". Mr.Bates meet Mr.Black Kettle

I guess next Bush thinks EVERYONE will hold hands and sing "Cumbaya My Lord" or "You're My Best Friend"...As I like to say quite a bit "Not in this lifetime pal".

Default Well, now that he effectively IGNORED thousands of black voters in OHIO and elsewhere

I guess he thinks he can be magnanimous now? I mean really, its all just smoke and mirrors anyway...I wonder if he really thinks he's fooling anyone with his doublespeak?

I'm pretty sure she's referencing to the large number of black and other minority voters that were disenfranchised and denied their rights in 2000, and possibly 2004

Exactly! Ugh. "As I said in my inaugural address, we cannot carry the message of freedom and the baggage of bigotry at the same time." Hello? Gays, bisexuals, and transgendered people are here! Mr. President, you always talk through us like we're invisible unless we want to get married or obtain other rights and/or privileges enjoyed by other Americans, then you make enemies of us!
