I planned to post this awhile ago, but it totally escaped me. Don't ask me why Lindsey does what he does on Peacekeeper, I have absolutely no clue. Hope this helps all of you guitarists out there.
EDIT: There were several mistakes on the original. Please scroll down for a revised copy. Last edited by MiniLindsey; 01-18-2005 at 03:42 PM.. Reason: mistakes in chart |

I can't remember footage of Peacekeeper from Live in Boston, but from the 6 or 7 times I stood in front of LB at the gigs, (and incidentally from the footage of FM on Letterman I watched recently), I saw the capo on the 3rd fret and the guitar was in standard tuning. Also in the same interview (can't remember which guitar magazine it was), they had the official tabs for Peacekeeper which showed standard tuning with capo on the 3rd. I don't know if this is relevant at all, but Lindsey has a very strange way of holding chords, in the sense that when you watch him it looks like he's always a step further up than you think. E.g. If you look at I'm So Afraid on the Dance, it looks like he's holding down F# and C# chords during the verses, but obviously they're just F and C. On many occasions I thought he had his guitar in a flat or sharp tuning, but it turned to be just the angles and the way he was holding the chords. Oh just noticed one other little thing - he used the white Strat on Tusk from November 30th 2003 at Earls Court, not Go Your Own Way. That's some wild tuning for World Turning!! I've never payed attention to his guitar tuning during that song, I enjoy it too much! I play it in simple Drop D, works fine for me, but never tried playing it along to the 2003/4 versions so I have no idea whether that tuning you've got there is right. ![]() ![]() |

Thanks for your inquiries.
First of all, every video I have of Lindsey playing Peacekeeper shows him capoed on the 2nd fret. Also, during his solo, he plays top string 12th fret (not relative to capo), which in standard tuning would be an E, but when he plays it I hear an F. Beautiful Child is in the sounding key of B major. On one clip I have, I see him playing a standard A minor chord shape when I hear him playing a G# minor, and a C chord shape for B. As for Eyes of the World, I see him playing A, D, and E chords for Ab, Db, and Eb. In fact, I have a video of him playing it on Nov. 29 at Earls Court which I will attach, in which you can clearly see that he has his guitar tuned down a half step. I know which article you're talking about for Say Goodbye, but it turns out that he misphrased what he was saying. He said he tuned the G down a step, but he didn't specifically mention that it was from Open G. You probably just assumed it was from standard tuning. Also, this open G7 tuning is tuned down a half-step for the live version. Yes I have tried playing it in that tuning, and it works. Here are the chords I use: Am7 (Abm7): x2221x D7 (Db7): 0x421x GMaj7 (GbMaj7): x0420x G6 (Gb6): x0220x As for Red Rover, it's just a guess. I haven't seen any video footage of it, but I have been told that there is no capo. It works for me, so I put it. The tuning for World Turning is incorrect. I screwed up when I was typing it and didn't notice. It should actually be C#-G#-C#-F#-A#-D#, which is Drop D tuned down a half-step. I would've put it in terms of Db but that would have contradicted with the key signature of C# minor (there is no such thing as the key of Db minor in music theory). The song is basically the same as earlier versions, except a half-step lower, and instead of the main riff going 1-e-and-a 2-e-and-a 3-e-and-a 4-e-and-a, it just goes 1-and 2-and 3-and 4-e-and. In other words, he doesn't play the 2nd string 3rd fret on every upbeat of the 8th note. I just noticed I put the tuning wrong. I knew the Strat was for Tusk, I put it under GYOW and didn't notice. I made too many mistakes, so I'm gonna post a revised copy. By the way, I am NOT, I repeat, NOT Lindsey. But I know a lot about his technique and am happy to help any guitarist. -Mike ![]() |

For the chorus of Say Goodbye, what exactly would the chord shapes be then? I'm having a hard time figuring that out, although the chords you gave do fit the verses perfectly in that odd tuning. The chords are obviously high up on the neck, and I think there are at least 4 distinctly different ones... The first one being sort of an Am shape on the 12th fret, but I can't figure out the bass notes he's playing so darn fast... I'm sure the last chord he does is shaped like this: XX9980, picking that alternating with putting his pinky on the 10th fret of the D (I mean, Db) string. PLEASE help with the rest, though, as I've been dying to master this song for ever but have always found it really hard. I'll keep toying with it in the mean time! Nice job on the list, BTW, I'll hafta check out that tuning for World Turning!
Adam PS: While we are on the topic, I've been thinking of getting a new amp this summer to run my '82 Les Paul Custom through. Any suggestions on a good one that can better help me to eminate Lindsey's sound? Thanks! AR Last edited by larg; 01-18-2005 at 08:45 PM.. |

It's too bad there's no easy way to 'tab' keyboards, cause I could easily do Chris's stuff. I mean, I could write out or play in the music through midi, but not everyone reads.

Also, are you sure that The Chain isn't played in DADGBD tuning? I'm pretty sure the high is dropped down to D as well... when you watch him, he seems to be hitting both that string and the B string during the guitar solo, in the beginning when he alternates between the C and D notes on the 1st and 2nd frets of the B string, and I just don't see how that would sound right in standard tuning; plus, in the beginning when he does the little riff that goes high all of a sudden up at the 6th fret on the top string, which would only sound right in open D tuning:
E-6-5-----0----6pulloff5-----0-- B------6-----------------6----- I don't know, I'm not really an expert, but that's how I play it and it sounds pretty much like what he does and it looks like what he's playing (although he may be hitting the 3rd fret B string rather than an open D). World Turning is great that way, too, BTW. It's dead on in that tuning. Adam |
