OK, what is up with this video?
I just watched it today on launch.com, and it's just bizarre. I mean, the imagery is totally lost on me. Why a table full of rotting food, with rodents feasting away on the remains? Why the swans? Why? ![]() Last edited by blinker12; 10-22-2004 at 12:12 AM.. |

Just a thought... I was reading Great Expectations around the time the video came out and I wonder if there's a connection -- I think the point was to paint Stevie (or her character in the video) as a Miss Havisham sort. In the book, she gets jilted at the altar so she becomes a recluse, wears her wedding dress indefinitely, keeps her table set for a feast, and generally wastes away pining for this lost love. In one of the TISL interviews Stevie talked about choosing to record Every Day because she thought it was about someone you see all the time but know you can't have, and how that person consumes your thoughts. I can see how that might tie in, and visually the dinner table scene in the video mimics some of the description of Miss Havisham's dining room in the book. (Plus she's wearing a white dress during that part, no?) Stevie seems to love all things Dickensian, so who knows.
As for the blindfolded men sleeping in trees and the black swans, beats me . |

An inspired Ledgie by the name of Livia brought to our attention a year or so ago that the Every Day video fits perfecctly in with the story of Running Through the Garden, which is about the Nathanial Hawthorne story 'Rappacini's Daughter'. A very literary Ledgie, Nancy, referred us to the story here. Check it out!
Another thread in this web of inspiration is that sometime in the 80s, Christine drew a portait of Rappacini's daughter to give to Stevie, and that apparently this is the same portrait on the mantle in the fold-out picture of the studio in the SYW liner notes.

I love that video and it always seemed to me that it was a version of Rappacini's Daughter and Great Expectations. While not my favorite Stevie song (Im not a fan of her covering other people's material when she has so many of her own out there unheard), the video is one of my favorites!
Bring back the colored dresses, Stevie! You are a gorgeous woman!! rbs

I am a big fan of this video but I do agree that the song itself is mediocre. blah, dull, etc. Why do the record execs seem to always release a non-Stevie song first from her last few albums?? even if they don't have faith a Stevie song will sell her album, they should at least take the long-time fanbase into consideration.
I like both ideas of Great Expectations and 'Rappacini's Daughter' but I personally think the imagery is more Charles Dicken's Great Expectations. I'm also think Stevie discussed her idea of Trouble in Shangri La about having everything and then inevitably losing it and this theme shows up in the video's meal scene. I think redoing Running through the Garden for Say You Will was Lindsey,Micks and John's idea which came from the demo tapes Stevie left them during the TISL tour. I don't think she considered that song for TISL. I don't get the blindfold guys in the trees either and I personally hate the peach dress with the crimped hair at the end...too 80's. But Stevie looks lovely in the ivory dress and I really liked her hair swept back...her traditional black dress with the long blond hair and holding the crystal ball (the FM nod) to start the video was a good idea and made her look great helped by the down angle of the camera. now onto my request, I recently replaced my pc so I've lost both the Everyday and Socerer video...can anyone help??? feel free to email me...

I always thought the guys were wearing masks to keep their identity safe, just as Stevie never (well, almost never) says which men her songs are written about. She never names names. Now, why they're sleeping in trees with pillows, I have no idea.
But I like the video, especially since she bothered to make one at all. ![]() |

Peter gives Wendy an "acorn" as a symbol of a "kiss"...Wendy gives Peter a "thimble"...When the "lost boys" shoot arrows at Wendy the acorn in her shirt pocket takes the arrow and she is saved.

I think in the video she is a gentler version of Circe. In the Odyssey the goddess enchants all the men and offers them very special food and beverages to transform them in pigs, who then live in the woods outside her house. In the video she transforms them in the more beautiful (and vane?) black swans. But she's singing to her Odysseus, the only one she's not been able to fool like the others, the only one she falls in love with.

I agree with the nod to Great Expectations and Rappacini's daughter. Different parts of the video go along with both stories.
On the men in the trees part, I always that the guys sleeping in the trees above her head meant that she's only seeing these men in her dreams or in her mind (which represents them being above her in the trees----like dreaming trees), and only as they were in the past, not how they are now or how her relationship is with them now. I think all the black in the video represents death and darkness, since the color black is supposed mean death. In this case, it represents the death of her past loves. If you'll notice, when the guys are alive in different parts of the video (she is probably thinking of them in her mind as they were when she was with them), she is wearing colors and the whole video brightens up with colors. Then, the video cuts to how things are in real life, and the video and her clothes go back to black. That is just my take on it. Let me know what you guys think.
