Default Happy Birthday Tusk!

I just happened to be playing the Tusk remastered CD today, and as I was flipping through the booklet I noticed that Tusk was released on October 12, 1979. Today is also Tuesday, when most new albums are released, which I thought was a little weird.

So, HAPPY 25TH TUSK!

Do you think the people who declared the album a "commercial failure" ever imagined that it would be reaching a whole new audience with a 2-disc deluxe reissue on its Silver Anniversary?

So, IN YOUR FACE, stupid music industry execs!!!

Well. That's my line. Couldn't agree more. Still THE album that gains meaning, depth and beauty everytime you hear it in it's entirety. There is no better one. 25 years. wow.

Happy Birthday to the best Fleetwood Mac album there is. I guess this must be my 25th anniversary as a fan too because the Tusk album is what made me a fan=:-)I hadn't thought about it until you brought it up! Thanks!

You know I'll be lifting the needle to "IKINW" every time someone scores, no matter who it is. That's like the ultimate goal-scoring music, if we exclude "Storms".

Livia asked me to re-tell my TUSK story, so here it goes...

I was in 9th grade at Blessed Hope Academy and on Oct 12th, my mother had written a note to the school's principle (Mr Ashcraft) granting me permission to call home every hour on the half-hour to "check on a special package that will be arriving today". When I'd call home, my mom would have already called Sound Warehouse to check to see when the LP had arrived and sure enough, at 1:30 that afternoon, my mother said, "OK, honey, they have it. I'm on my way". And we raced to Sound Warehouse and there, in the middle of the store, was a huge pile of TUSK lp's. I screamed very loudly when I saw the dog biting the leg and I was shaking with excitment. The LP was on sale for $13.99 which, at the time, was pretty steep even for a double album. I also got the cassette because there was no way I would be able to wait the 15 minute ride home without hearing anything. I tore open the LP and poured over the artwork and the scribblings and was just amazed that it was finally in my hands. I was shocked at LB's appearance...I thought, "Well, Stevie broke up with him and now he's gay". LOL
When I got home, the very first song I played was "Beautiful Child" because I had read that she dontated all the royalites to UNICEF. I dont know how I knew that, but I read it somewhere. I pulled my curtains closed, I lit my vanilla candles and "Airs" incense, put on my headphones and didn't leave my bedroom for hours. I...was...in...heaven. I will never forget that day.

It's hard to believe that was 25 years ago...time does fly.

So, happy anniversary to my favorite album of all time. You have aged very well...and I think you sound as awesome now as you did then!

Default I'll rehash my story too. 25 years ago this happened:

How I got The Album back in '79...

I was almost 14 years old and in love with the Mac for two years at the moment Tusk came out. I was torturing the recordstore-guys for months and months asking about release-dates and it felt like ages until the day came that IT was there. I called all 4 recordstores of my hometown to ask if The Album came out that morning and only one said: wait a minute, I'm just opening the packages.... I waited for a minute....felt like half an hour...and he said, Yes! 29,95! ( dutch guilders ). I was a bit shocked at the price, but I had gathered money for months so I grabbed 30 piek and jumped on my bike with my heart pumping in overdrive. I was downtown in about 15 minutes and could not wait to go back home. I put down the money and he said... don't you wanna hear it? You asked me about this damn record a thousand times and you don't want to listen? So he unpacked the whole thing, while he was complaining about all the covers and that there was more paper than vinyl in there. I listened to over and over, which I loved immediately because of the warm sound and then The Ledge started and I did not know if I had to cry of disappointment or happiness because I felt both at the same time. This was so weird and different, but it was so great to hear that fantastic voice coming from everywhere I got a thick throat and I began to sweat. I said to the man, in a vibrating voice: this is so amazing, I have to listen to this at home. "Is it good?" he asked while putting The Album in it's perfect fitting plastic bag.
"don't know yet. Maybe IT's trash, maybe IT's brilliant. But I don't think IT is like Rumours."

I hung the bag on the the right side of my steer and rode home as fast as I could. At 75 % of my ride home, it happened. My right knee catched the bottom of the plastic bag and the above side of The Record hit my steer. I was riding the bike so hard that all those covers and Two Thick Vinyl Plates cracked. An angle of 90 degrees was hanging on my steer when Fell on the side walk of the street and scratched my elbow. It was bleeding but I did not see that until much later, my trousers were torn a little bit, too, but my eyes went blurry looking at that Perfect Hook in Plastic hanging on the steer.

I walked back to the record store crying. With no money left I put The Thing on the counter. The man looked at me: " did you have an accident? Are you alright?" I said with a thin voice: " yes, But Tusk is not...."

He looked at IT, packed a new one, gave it to me and said: "Let This Thing be brilliant damn it! Go home, boy, but don't rush!"

In the months afterwards, That Album unleashed IT's beauty to me. But until today, I'm regretting that I left the store without my broken album. Would have been a beautiful token of the turning point in my music- taste. Yes, the best selling band in the world got me interested in alternative-even underground- music, through Tusk. The best Album ever recorded by anyone. Not topped in 25 years. Wow.

Ok I guess I will share my Tusk story. It is not very exciting, however.

Basically, I sent my Mother out on the bus to a local dept. store to get the double LP. I was almost afraid to tell my Mom how much $ the LP actually cost. I could not function all day at school (I was 14) I just wanted to get my Tusk. When I did get home my Mom told me that they did not have it. I was ready to cry or punch a wall. My Mom then pulls out the LP. I think I started jumping up and down with delight.

I could not wait to open the LP up. I loved the photos inside. I wondered who this new guy was and where did Lindsey go to? I could not believe that was the same guy.
I had mixed feelings about the LP but I did like it for the most part. I grew to love it and I did finally get to see them in concert for the first time Thanksgiving night 1979 in Providence. I spent the whole fall and winter with the LP both listening and looking at it.
