Have fun. I'm sure I don't have to tell you to let us know about it.

It was an amazing show. Fantastic energy from everyone -- especially Stevie. She looked and sounded happier, healthier, and livelier than any concert on this or last year's SYW Tour. Sara was fantasic... a dream come true. She had enerygy and a smile for every song. In fact -- I'd go as far to say that it was one of her best shows since the Dance tour.
Hope everyone else enjoyed it!

Hope you don't mind my posting my review of this one as well. And, again, I'll note a SPOILERS warning:

The headline is another fantastic show. Stevie looked and sounded great – didn’t seem to be holding back at all and the voice was strong for the whole show.

Everyone knows the show and set list so well at this point, I’ll just try to relate a few impressions. It was a damp, chilly night, which made me worry a bit about Stevie, but she was quite well bundled up and seemed really happy again tonight. She had a heavy, full length black dress/coat and a heavy duty, fluffy black scarf/stole around her neck for most of the evening. Not quite as bundled as for the Today Show concert last year, but close. The bottom of the dress/coat was an embroidered, salmon colored fabric that was quite pretty. She also had her black gloves on for the whole show (at PNC she took them off after the first few songs), except that she switched to red gloves for Sara.

The mikes were set up quite a distance back from the front of the stage, to try to keep the mist and rain off the band – the wind was blowing in towards the stage. It made the show a little less intimate, but it wasn’t a bad effect having them on an island more to themselves. Lindsey and Stevie once again had some nice little interactions – the same scripted ones, of course, but also some different ones that were clearly spontaneous. Stevie was playing a lot of air guitar and smiling at Lindsey in the parts where she came over to face Lindsey while he was playing. On one of the early songs when she was doing this, some of the rain must have blown in on Lindsey’s face because she reached her gloved hand up and wiped off his face before heading back over to her mike.

As Newsday predicted, the shawls were definitely out tonight. She has at least three or four different black shawls, the GDW gold shawl, the Landslide salmon shawl, the Sara red shawl, and the Goodbye Baby red shawl with the gold embroidery. Once again, she had the hairclip and large earring for Sara, and also changed out the big, black fluffy scarf/stole for a beautiful red and gold scarf. I am so glad they put Sara into the set list – it is a true highlight. The woman next to me went nuts when the song started. She had been to one of the shows last year and I told her before the show tonight that there were three new songs in the set list, but didn’t say which ones.

The twirls were out tonight too – even more than last weekend. She was twirling (in ones and twos) on a lot of songs, but really brought them out for Sara – twirling from her mike to Lindsey’s to sing one of the verses there, and then hitting about ten twirls at the end – and of course for Stand Back, where she came out twirling right at the start (about four or five) and then hit at least a dozen at the end.

Shawls! I forgot about the blue one. It’s a beauty. And Lindsey-Stevie interactions. After Landslide, when they clasp hands, Lindsey started kissing her hand and then nibbling up her arm. Hadn’t seen that one before. On Tusk, at the part where Lindsey starts stalking Stevie leading up to their air-boxing, instead of retreating, Stevie put her hands out and made a bee-line straight for Lindsey as if to Tusk him! He seemed a little surprised, took a couple of steps back and then caught her by the shoulders. Maybe this was scripted too, but maybe not. Hadn’t seen that one before either.

The rain started to pick up right before Say You Will (it had been just a light mist before that). Before she started into the introduction to the song, Stevie says something like “okay, we’ve got to make the rain stop now. Let’s say a little prayer, say ‘rain stop!’” The crowd yelled out (in pretty good unison too), “Rain stop!” Stevie smiled, said something like “that’s good” and let out a little giggle. Then went on into the introduction. Unfortunately, the rain didn’t stop, it picked up a bit (I think this was the song where Stevie wiped the rain off Lindsey’s face). But the crowd didn’t seem to mind – and the rain made a rainbow in the spotlights.

By the time they got to Come, it was a pretty steady rain (not a downpour, but enough to notice it) – but Lindsey came out to the edge of the stage anyway. It was actually pretty cool watching him in the spotlight surrounded by the rain, going wild on the guitar. (And unlike Stevie, he was not bundled up – the usual white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and the top several buttons unbuttoned. Between the dampness and the chill, you could also see his breath, particularly as he gets all revved up. I wish I had a picture of it – the spotlight highlighting the rain, Lindsey’s head bobbing up and down, and this sort of snorting steaming breath coming out of his mouth.

It was definitely a good crowd tonight. I’d say about 80% full. And everyone – at least up front – on their feet literally the entire night. This is the first show in seven where my ass didn’t touch my seat once. And I saw Paul O’Neill (ex-Yankee) there – he was several rows behind me.

Stevie was funny on her Landslide dedication. She said that when they come out to Jones Beach, she’s never quite sure whether to call it New York, or Jones Beach, but whatever it was, this was dedicated to “your city”. She also dedicated Beautiful Child to “Liz” (I assume that’s Liz Rosenberg, her publicist), saying “I know you’re out there somewhere.” Her performance of Beautiful Child tonight was just stunning – I think the best of the seven shows I’ve been to. Same for Gold Dust Woman. The two back to back were incredible. With the wind blowing in towards the stage, the streamers on Stevie’s mike were blowing from left to right all night. On GDW, with the yellow back lighting, the streamers looked like they were black and gold, and with Stevie’s gold shawl, it was quite an effect. The wind was also blowing Stevie’s hair all night – she looked beautifully windswept. (The rain, fortunately, disappeared by the end of Come and didn’t return – Mick made the comment “good rain-stopping” during his intros in the encore part.)

Lindsey seemed a little more subdued than last week. Now “more subdued” is a relative term – he still had his crazy moments, but it was more like last year’s craziness, not the “crazier than ever” that I saw at PNC last week. Only one flung guitar (the white Tusk guitar), and it was a “gentle” fling. Maybe it was that the mikes were so far back from the crowd that he couldn’t feed off the crowd energy the way he usually does. Or maybe he’s just running out of guitars. I did notice that the Come guitar was still missing it’s bottom knob.

On GYOW, when Lindsey came to the audience to let them play his guitar, someone in the crowd gave him a necklace – actually slipped it over his head as he was playing. Pretty cool. And the Stand Back dance is still there, hot as ever.

I found Mick’s drum solo was reasonably tolerable tonight. He had some technical difficulty with his mouth mike – like it wasn’t picking up. So he’d shout his usual unintelligible routine, but even from the sixth row, you could barely hear anything. Then he’d turn his head and mouth something like, “this mike isn’t working”. By the time he got out from behind the drum kit, they finally got it working. But then one side of his drum vest went out. He started pointing to it, and they eventually got that working again too. The flubs – and Mick’s reaction to them – made the whole thing sufficiently different that I wasn’t standing there thinking “interminable” again.

A couple of other Stevie observations that popped into my mind – she had on high heel boots, with very thin heels, for the encore and was navigating them well. And on GYOW, she was very interactive with all the band members – going over to Sharon and Jana to sing face to face with them, then going over to Taku and windmilling her tambourine in parallel with his windmilling drumstick. (Sharon and Jana were both looking good tonight – in black leather, and Jana had a black scarf with red polka dots.) Stevie shed her scarves for the encore – by then the rain had completely gone and it felt pretty comfortable.

I’m hoping that the damp weather didn’t have any adverse effects on Stevie, but she sure seemed strong for the whole of this show. Hopefully that bodes well for the rest of the tour.

Thanks for the great review! I am so pumped up for tomorrow night in Hartford. It's supposed to be sunny and warm , so I'm sure Stevie will be thrilled about that! Woohooo! I can't wait to see if there are any more S&L interactions. I especially liked the part about Lindsey nibbling on Stevie's arm.

COSAR:

I was there last night too. WOW!! You described it perfectly--down to the very last shawl. I noticed the boots too!

You were right on--HER VOICE, HER HAIR, HER WEIGHT, HER GESTURES, HER FACIAL EXPRESSIONS, HER MOVEMENTS, HER TWIRLS, HER INTERACTIONS--everything was as great as the Mirage tour--and of course her voice was better now than the Mirage tour.

THE OLD STEVIE WAS BACK--at least for last night. I hope she can maintain her energy with the grind of the rest of the shows.

I saw her last week in NJ--and although I decected no problems with her voice--her energy was sluggish and she looked heavy and tired. What a difference!

I guess no Silver Springs though--to preserve her voice???!!??!!

ok.....i'm back. a little drained but breathing....this was supposed to be a short review but what the hell. i'm crabby today and don't want to be at work...so i'm reliving last night....

never been to jones beach before. even though the weather was lousy, it worked out to my advantage traffic-wise. got there in 2-1/2 hours. only hit some traffic crossing the gw bridge which is to be expected.

so basically, i stuffed the camera down in one sock, and the lens in the other. this is an old pentax 1000 that has all the manual lenses. it takes decent pics, but i really need to get something more compact.

i have such a guilty complex as it is, so i'm thinking i'm going to be found out. even though i had put the camera and lens in the back of the sock/leg, when i was walking they managed to move to the inner sides of my ankles. needless to say, it was a little awkward. i totally felt that i was walking funny. once i got through the gates, i went to the bathroom and put the stuff in my pockets. cargo pants are great for carrying lotsa stuff! the security wasn't too bad getting in. they let me bring the b/n album in.

allow me to kavetch for a minute....i had to dump my water before entering. then, i was thirsty and had to pay $5 for a 24 ounce bottle of water that was given to me with the cap removed and, subsequently, got knocked over during the show. so i basically paid $5 for two sips of water. what kind of country is this that doesn't let you into a venue with your own water, then charges you an arm and a leg for a bottle that doesn't even have the cap to prevent it from spilling over? sorry, just needed to vent about that.

i couldn't believe how cold it was. i'm a big fan of summer and when it's 55 degrees out, i'm not happy. i'm glad i brought a jacket. i'm usually known to NOT be prepared for the weather. not this time. i was also under the impression that part of the seats were covered. they weren't. wasn't wild about my seat. i was basically at the farthest right corner of the stage right in the front. i was under the impression when i got the ticket that it was closer to the middle section. oh well. additionally, the band was set in about thirty feet from crowd. so, even if you had front row they were still 30 feet back.

i saw chris nicks walking around the grounds. what a grungy, seedy looking guy. i can sort of believe the stories that some of you have said about him. i was going to approach him about either getting backstage or just having stevie and lindsey sign the record. forget it, i figured i'd spare myself any aggravation. i asked the security guard, "any chance of me getting backstage?" not surprising, he says "nope." hey, you gotta ask.

so, basic memories of the show, in no particular order...

i thought stevie looked and sounded phenomenal. i even thought "dreams" wasn't boring. i don't know if it's the combination of the haircut and outfits, or her energy level, but if it was the last time i ever see them or her, i'd be happy. she definately kicked it up a lot last night. i could tell as soon as she came out. lindsey did seem more subdued. he still pulled out the punches like last year, but just seemed preoccupied.

i'm not getting too much into describing the outfits stevie wore...you can check the other posts for that. i think most of you have seen the pics anyway. she looked much more classy than last year. no sign of "black dress"!!! i have ZERO complaints about her wardrobe. i liked the black duster coat thing with the pink salmon design. it's basically the one she wore for the '98 "stand back" Leno or Letterman performance. the thing she brought out for "don't stop" looked pretty much like the one she wore in the Red Rocks video during "outside the rain/dreams". i totally forgot to look for the boots during "sara". i did notice the ones she wore at the end.

i thought stevie sounded great. as a matter of fact, there were a few times that i thought her voice sounded really strong, and i was quite amazed. she did a few things vocally that were very nice. a few times i was very politely taken by surprised. i was completely mesmerized during "gold dust woman" and "beautiful child". i love that new ending to "gold dust woman": "...shadow....shadow". it's very trippy. "beautiful child" is just awesome. i have to say that i like it a tad better than "sara".

what else....oh, "stand back" had to be one of the best ones i've seen in years. i know everyone says that but, it really kicked ass. oh, for some reason, "say you will" sounded like it was in a higher key. did they change the key for this leg? i'll have to check the bootlegs.

ugh, i'm getting tired of writing. for lindsey's stuff: liked "red rover" a lot. emphasize A LOT. glad it's in the set. "say goodbye" sounded a tad off to me. enjoyed "i know i'm not wrong" too. also, one string on "world turning" sounded a tad out of tune. otherwise, his solos were great. wished i was in front when he comes to the lip of the stage. i kept hoping that one of them would come over to my side. unfortunately, there was a puddle right in front of me and i sure as hell would hate to see lindsey get electrocuted on my behalf. as it was, the b/n album stayed in the bag all night.

oh yeah, stevie's "rain stop!" prayer was funny. and she said something like "are we in new york? are we at jones beach?" she basically said she loved nyc and was thanking all of us that were encompassed in the nyc area.

pictures....well, i managed to snap 18 before mr. douche security guy that was standing in front of me off to the right a little bit came over right when i was about to shoot the blue cape during "so afraid". he says "you can't take anymore pictures. i used 800 speed film with no flash. i did this last year and the pics came out pretty good. i hope they came out. one thing that was nice about where i was sitting was that my view was basically of stevie, lindsey, john, and mick...with partial views of brett and one or two of the extra guitarists. so my shots are from that angle. nothing against taku or the girls, but fm to me is just the four of them. hopefully, the pics came out.

my thought this morning as i woke was that i'm glad i went and still love the fact that they're around and really have to give them credit for being out there and doing what they're doing. they definately can still kick some booty for their age. i even didn't mind mick's drum thing during "world turning".

so, that's it for now. and i was going to keep this short!
