Default A "journalist's" take on the Rumours re-issue and Silver Spring (sic)

Blog

And here's what I just emailed him (thank you Penguin, for having the dates readily available for me in the discography):

I agree with you, it is a great song, but the correct song title is "Silver SpringS" - it was first available on CD on the Fleetwood Mac boxed set, "The Chain," which was released in 1992. It was also released on the DVD audio version of Rumours, which came out in 2001. And after hearing THAT version of Rumours, I can't listen to anything else. It's truly amazing.

So far, I've only been listening to the bonus discs of the Rumours and Tusk reissues. The White Album one is worthless, but the remastering they did on those original album tracks is astounding.

Well... besides the mistake, I think that he's pretty much right. I don't like the 'revised' running orders of any albums. I just happen to think that albums should be reissued the way they were issued the first time. And they had changed the running order with the DVD-A, right? And it wasn't the same one either.

You don't just come and insert a song that wasn't on the album in the middle of it. That's what I've always thought. That's only ONE of the things that bothered me about the infamous Let It Be... Naked thing, and it bothers me now with the Rumours reissue.

But that's going too far away I think. The important thing is that people got their reissues.

Except wasn't "Silver Springs" available on the single for "Go Your Own Way"? So technically, while IT wasn't a single, it was available ON a single in 1976 (I can't remember if GYOW was the first single off of Rumours, I believe it was). And that makes it not first available in 1992, but 1976.

For the first three months after the single was released, "Silver Springs" got about equal airplay as "Go Your Own Way" (at least in the Los Angeles area)

Yes, and I actually have it on the flip side of "Don't Stop." But the guy mentioned that he'd been waiting for Silver Springs to come out ON CD forever ("...I've wanted this song on CD for years.") - I didn't mention the Dance version, since he was clearly referring to the studio version throughout the article.

Then what's the point of a re-issue?

That journalist's Star Wars analogy is weak.

Silver Springs was supposed to be on the album. I think it's the ultimate compensation (for lack of a better term) for Stevie, she finally gets to see her beloved song on Rumours the way she intended it to be.

And what a masterpiece it IS!

SILVER SPRINGS on the RUMOURS REISSUE proves Stevie Nicks is all-alone in her lyrical greatness. This is her finest Fleetwood Mac moment!

She delivers, all right. Warm and passionately…. Nicks is at the top of her game during her classic emotive crescendo.... which Christine McVie aids with tremendous b&w-keyed fire!

Buckingham’s breathtaking chiming guitar is totally divine throughout, especially when Stevie sings passages like:

"And don't say that she's pretty
And did you say that she loved you?
Baby, I don't wanna know Oh, no
And can you tell me, was it worth it?"

LB also peppers the tune with harmonics from heaven!

Is that lovely haunting instrument you hear at the very, very start an organ? And what guitar is Buck using on this for the chiming? I adore it! It sounds like he's playing three different guitar parts ---- the chimes, harmonic splendor and his pretty, romantic electric solo......

This is a beautiful, beautiful song on here!

I couldn't wait for my mail order to come, so I purchased RUMOURS and TUSK at Best Buy on my lunch hour and listened to bits in my car today.

I have been quite the opposite (I have a great majority of both of the bonus discs material already) since these remastered discs are definitely geared for us audiophiles ("Rumours" sounds very similar to the 5.1 DVD-A version on my stereo system...Especially when played in surround sound).

That was a ridiculous article. He needs to use his time better than writing an entire piece that criticizes the inclusion of SS.

To improve the sound and include bonus tracks at the end of the sequence. JMHO.

I agree that it's a ridiculous article. Whether it should have been included or not, how can a serious writer not mention that SS was the linchpin of the blockbuster "Dance" CD? (Yeah I know it wasn't the original recording, but so what). Where was he in 1997 in a cave, in Iraq, or maybe he was 12 years old, listening to Hanson!!??!!

I agree. "Silver Springs" is NOT on the original record. It should have been included on disc 2 with the other bonus tracks. I've already solved that problem by burning a new CD with "Silver Springs" deleted. Other than that, I have no complaints about the Rumours re-issue. The bonus tracks on disc 2 are terrific.
