Default Anaheim Show

Hi All,

Been reading this board for about 2 years, thought it was about time I wrote something.

I've recently downloaded the Anaheim SYW show from All The Kings Horses website and was quite surprised by the recording. For a Westwood One show, why does it sound as though they were singing in a box? Was it poor mixing or how it was recorded? Listening to Stevie reminded me of the recording from Live at the Whisky in '91 when she performed in the nightclub.

Cheers,

Dave

PS-Anyone got the MP3s of the full unedited Red Rocks concert?

The art of live recording via the Westwood One outfit has sunk to an all-time low. It's as piss-poor as can be.

Just downloaded it and I totally agree with you about the mixing... it is just dreadful. I guess one of the more annoying aspects about it is the mixing of audience noise into the sound. I was at several FM concerts last year and I didn't hear people cheering full throttle during the entire first verse of "Silver Springs!" And there is something about Stevie's vocal that is not quite right... it went through so much "sweetening" that I almost went into insulin shock listening to her. ;-)

Ah, just like the Tango in the Night video! So phony, it sounds like crap, imo.

It was broadcast live, and I'm not sure that they can do that kind of vocal "sweetening" live like that.
I think that kind of thing can only be done post-production.

I agree with David, the mix is very disappointing... for example, you can hear Lindsey and the girls better than Stevie on "Say You Will."
And overall, the instruments aren't bright or crisp, and everything sounds flat... not flat as in "off-key," there's just no life to the sound.

Ah well, hopefully the Soundstage DVD will render the Anaheim radio show obsolete.

Default WOAH!!

This version of Come is GREATNESS!! One of my faves now!!

ISA is always greatness, but Pittsburgh has yet to be topped...and I do remember the London Saturday 29th show ISA which brought me to tears....can't wait to hear it again when Neil posts it!!!

Thumbs down Well...

I'm not that big of a fan of the July 17-Anaheim, CA broadcast...

The mix is awful and too inconsistent in comparison to other shows that were broadcast over the airwaves (It reminds me of the May 15-Buffalo show which was a very dry sounding bootleg sourced from an ALD system)

It's really strange that some bootleg recordings made of shows during the US SYW tour actually have better sound than Anaheim (ie-July 12-Los Angeles...Which is one of the two best sounding SYW shows IMHO, With Oct.18-Las Vegas being the other.)

I would say it's the best for hearing Lindseys guitar... Just about every show I've heard is pretty average for hearing his playing.

It was only broadcast live on some stations in the West coast. The East coast broadcast (and many other broadcasts around the country) was touched up and broadcast later on; I believe this is the touched up version. If you listen to the audience recording and the touched up recording, you can spot the "sweetening" of her vocals.

Welcome to My World was broadcast live on the West coast, but it was then touched up for all other broadcasts, too.

Hmm.
I have a 2-CD set, that was recorded and burned from the West Coast broadcast the night the concert was performed, and I have cassettes that I recorded myself, from the East Coast broadcast the next night, and I never noticed a difference in the sound of Stevie's vocals from one night to the next... and I usually have a good ear for these things.

'Welcome To My World' is definitely overdubbed... Stevie was having some kind of bronchial/asthmatic problem the night of the show, so she overdubbed most of her vocals for future broadcasts.

Is there anywhere to download that Las Vegas show? I was at that show and they sounded great that night, especially Stevie on gold dust woman, and stand back... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
