I know all of you are going to laugh at me, but I have never traded for/or ever listened to a demo. I feel so guilty, because I read on Ask Stevie (which probably isn't really Stevie) that she is so upset when people steal her unrecorded (unfinished) music. I just don't know why, can anyone help me feel a little bit more secure ,

cause I know there are some great ones I would probably love.

Ask Stevie on Nicksfix.com? Im sure that is legitimate and it IS Stevie answering your questions. Regarding demos, that is a mixed bag. There are a lot of "master reel" tapes that have been released as of late. Someone in the LA area bought a storage lot Modern Records didnt pay on (Stevie's old label), and it contained TONS of reel to reel masters, gems really. That person apparently offered them to Stevie but she declined on the basis she already had her own copies. Go figure, I personally would have bought them if I felt THAT strongly about it, you know? Im sure she doesnt like it being out there... but she hasnt done all she could to possibly prevent it... I myself have some so now my concious is kicking in after reading your post, lol!

Call me Ice Princess, but I just don't care. I love listening to demos. ON the other hand, I get really pissed to see people buying & selling them... that's where it crosses the line, I think. But, if it's out there anyway & other people are listening to it, I may as well, too. Not to sound all if-everybody-else-jumped-off-a-bridge or anything, but.. if it's leaked, it's leaked.

I do agree wholeheartedly on the dont buy demo's thing. I recall someone based in Florida on eBay selling the Sanctuary demo for around $50 per CD - for about 21 minutes worth of music. eBay has clamped down on illegal sales in comparison to say 2001.

It's certainly a grey area, morally.
I, personally, don't download songs from a commercially available album, unless I plan to buy said album and just want a "sneak peak."
However rich an artist may be, you're still taking money out of someone's pocket... not just the artist, but the songwriters, the producers, the engineers, etc., etc.

I will, however, download radio mixes/edits, dance remixes, live versions, etc., as they are most often unavailable to purchase thru "legitimate" channels.

As far as the demos and outtakes go... I download those too. But if Stevie and/or Fleetwood Mac were ever to officially release them, I'd most definitely be purchasing them.

For example, I have five copies of 'Rumours' (vinyl, 8-track, cassette, CD, and DVD-Audio), but I'll definitely be buying the "remastered and expanded" version when it's released, for whatever additional tracks they've added.

So... if you think you'd like to get your hands on some of these demos, go for it.
Find someone who will trade with you, or who will do a 2-for-1 deal.
But be wary of anyone who wants to charge you for them (like on eBay or Yahoo Auctions), as no one deserves to make money off of these, other than the artist.

(And make sure you buy a copy if they're ever officially released!)

Another great point ~ in fact I ended up with 2 copies of Say You Will in order to get the bonus track CD. I hope to get even a remastered Buckingham~Nicks (?? one can dream ??) even though I already have a crisp copy which apparently was pressed its not a CD-R. Im looking forward to what a new Rumours may tell us...

I have some comments regarding Stevie's position on demos. I just looked at nicksfix and tried to do a search on the Ask Stevie page, but looks like the page is not searchable or something. ??? Anyway, I seem to recall her answer to the question of fans having demos was more along the lines of she preferred her fans to buy finished material. When she spoke of being angry that someone would steal her material, I'm pretty sure she was referring to a particular set of tapes from the early days. She has spoken on this subject several times in interviews and Q&As and that was the impression I was left with. I'm too lazy to search for all of it.

Yep. I feel OK downloading the demos because I know that 1. I'm not going to pay for or sell them. 2. I have no malicious intent, and 3. I have and will continue to buy anything that Fleetwood Mac and the FM-Family release- as opposed to downloading which I could EASILY do- to "show my support" (if you will).

I don't think Stevie really cares about the demos and bootlegs very much these days. I mean, the person that got the box of masters got ahold of Stevie and offered them to her and she told them it was alright, she already had her own copies! Stevie's been around the block a couple of times and knows by now that the masters would spread like wildfire and if she didn't, she inexcusably naive for a woman of 55.

I think that she was upset and bitter for quite awhile that someone came in, copied her tapes, and put them back quickly under her nose; she didn't even know they were copied. Now, however, I think she knows that it is pretty much the die-hard fans that enjoy them and that it isn't an industry of people making money off of her bootlegs. I don't think she has a problem with her fans enjoying her work. She's even referenced the bootleg matter herself in concert and in the Enchanted boxed set.
