Default Anybody else think that Chris has been under-appreciated as a singer?

I know her voice was often considered the critic's darling of Fleetwood Mac, but I think in general people gloss over what a distinctive, pleasant, and consistent vocalist she is. I'm surprised more people haven't asked her to guest on their albums or movie soundtracks, especially since her "retirement" - that would be an easy/low-key way for her to stay in music without the touring. True, it might be that she's turning down these offers right and left, but I just don't think so.

Christine has been slighted by the bands own fans, who seem to find LB and SN more interesting. And, while LB was the brains behind the band, Christine has proved to be the backbone.
She really hasn't done much in the way of guest appearances. The only ones i know of are her backing Robbie Patton in the early 80's and singing backup with LB on Randy Newman's I Love LA

Here's the link to the section of the Penguin discography which lsts her guest appearances:

You may wish to also track down the Beach Boys "L.A. (Light album)" from 1979 on which she sings uncredited on "Love surrounds me". Hope that's of help/interest/whatever.

I think Chris is underrated, period! It makes me mad and it frustrates me. What a beautiful talent all around.

The easy answer is of course, she's underrated & under appreciated. I think more so with the hard-core Fleetwood Mac fans, who really tend to be more Buckingham/Nicks oriented. Among the critics & casual fans, I think she is more appreciated. She has a beautiful voice & is a great song writer. She is a class act all the way.

Exclamation Most certainly!!!!!

Christine is WAY underrated. She's the ultimate grace and backbone of the band. She's a major part of what made the 'Mac the 'Mac!

I've always loved her voice. It's her as a performer I always found bland.

The fact Eva Cassidy didn't come close to her Songbird (imo) says a lot.

Definitely. She has one of the coolest, most soothing voices I've ever heard, and has (or rather, had?) a very impressive range. I'm actually very curious as to whether or not she still sounds as good as she did. I guess we'll soon find out.

I have said before and will say again, "Why" is one of the best things I have ever heard in my life. Long live Christine in my heart and the hearts of the loyal!!

Exclamation HECK YEAH!!!

Pretty much EVERYONE who's ever been in FM are underrated!! Christine brought a soothing touch to the band, (Warm Ways is almost COMA inducing!! LMAO!!) in the midst of Lindsey and Stevie's quirkiness. The woman has a very sexy voice and is beautiful...she was STUNNING on The Dance video. Her songs are soft, breezy, touching, sad, fun and energetic!! What a class act!!

I've always thought Christine was underappreciated and underrated. She has one of the most distinctive and decidedly COOL and soothing voices ever, not to mention she's a fantastic composer and songwriter. As a matter of fact, it was her 'Songbird' I chose as my wedding song 5 years ago.

I think it's her mellow persona..her lack of stage vigor..that has made her fade a bit more into the background than Stevie or Lindsey.
I heard her say in an interview one time that she always thought of herself as more of a percussionist...jamming with Mick and John...than being in the limelight with Stevie and Lindsey.

I'm so excited about this solo album she's supposed to be releasing. I love her previous two solo efforts and am anxious to see if this one proves she still has it all together!

You're right. Eva blew Chris' version off the map. I adore Chris, but Eva's version of Songbird is a glorious rendition that does the Old Gal Proud. It is almost TOO good, because after I heard it I wanted Chris to do it as perfectly.

Never know what you've got till it's gone...

I have a new appreciation for Chris. I know I under-rated her.
All of y'all who call her soothing hit the nail on the head. Her songs are the perfect laying-by-the-pool-having-a-cocktail songs.
In fact, I am now inspired. I am going to make myself a little mix cd of her songs, and once it warms up here, I will haul my butt up to the pool. I will float with my drink. I will stare up at the friggin palm trees and I will drink a toast to Ms. McVie. How exciting is that ? I believe it will start with Warm Ways, Brown Eyes, Why, Never Forget, Oh Daddy...hmmm this is going to be fun.
