Dictionaries will list other used pronunciations (just like you can now find "ain't" in the dictionary), however, the first pronunciation listed is usually the correct one.

I am sooooo anal about pronunciation in this day and age what with all the "ax" instead of "ask" and "boughten" instead of "purchased" and "you guys's" instead of "your" and "birfday" instead of "birthday" and "thee" instead of "the" and on and on and on....

Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine.

We are kindred souls. Though I can't help it sometimes because I have an accent.

The one that drives me nucking futs is when someone says "I have an idear." I.See.Red.

An old co-worker of mine would always say "ideal" for idea- I have have no gawddamn notion as to why she did it, but she did. She also said "West-min-is-ster" for Westminster. The broad drove me nuts, even though she's a sweetheart.

Please, please, puh-leeeeeeeze tell me you do NOT have a Boston accent!!! Where do you pahck yer cahh?? Ohhhh my lord....

My apartment manager says "What's the pah-rob-lum?" whenever I call him about something. Makes me want to VOMIT. Doesn't help that I hate him already.

Not that much of a Boston accent, but I have a slight foreign accent because my grandparents lived with us for years when I was growing up and they had the worst and most unintelligible accents I've ever heard. I must have picked it up a bit. They would say "garbage basket" and you'd hear it as "peanut butter". It's nothing big, though, and I can turn it on and off.

The first image that came into my head after reading this was Cloris Leachman from "History of the Word, Part One" where she complains about how they're so poor they don't even have their own language, only a stupid accent.

"Death to King Louieeeeeeeeeeeeee"

You know, I've heard that Cloris Leachman is the one of the most monstrous people to have walked the Earth. My friend worked on an episode of Malcolm In the Middle (I think, it may have been another sitcom) that she was on and said that she called the kids "little c*cksuckers" at every opportunity.

Sadly, the big red dic. does not agree with you regarding the latter pronounciation (emphasis supplied):

Main Entry: Ca·rib·be·an
Pronunciation: "kar-&-'bE-&n, k&-'ri-bE-&n
Function: adjective
Etymology: New Latin Caribbaeus, from Caribes
: of or relating to the Caribs , the eastern and southern West Indies, or the Caribbean Sea

And I didn't grow up in the country where I could trot on down to the general store for some moonpies and, if I was lucky, a little moonshine and a shoe shine for good measure.

and the correct way to say Almond IS Awlmond. the "L" is NOT silent.
Do you people ever open your dic.'s

Main Entry: da·ta

Pronunciation: 'dA-t&, 'da- also 'dä-

Function: noun plural but singular or plural in construction
Usage: often attributive
Etymology: Latin, plural of datum
1 : factual information (as measurements or statistics) used as a basis for reasoning, discussion, or calculation
2 : information output by a sensing device or organ that includes both useful and irrelevant or redundant information and must be processed to be meaningful
3 : information in numerical form that can be digitally transmitted or processed
usage Data leads a life of its own quite independent of datum, of which it was originally the plural. It occurs in two constructions: as a plural noun (like earnings), taking a plural verb and plural modifiers (as these, many, a few) but not cardinal numbers, and serving as a referent for plural pronouns (as they, them); and as an abstract mass noun (like information), taking a singular verb and singular modifiers (as this, much, little), and being referred to by a singular pronoun (it). Both constructions are standard. The plural construction is more common in print, evidently because the house style of several publishers mandates it.

Also, regarding the "L" in "almond" - it is acceptable to make it silent (emphasis and commentary supplied):

Main Entry: al·mond
Pronunciation: 'ä-m&nd, 'a-, 'äl-, 'al- The first two indicate the "L" is silent

Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English almande, from Middle French, from Late Latin amandula, alteration of Latin amygdala, from Greek amygdalE
1 a : the drupaceous fruit of a small tree (Prunus dulcis syn. P. amygdalus) of the rose family with flowers and young fruit resembling those of the peach; especially : its ellipsoidal edible kernel used as a nut b : any of several similar fruits
2 : a tree that produces almonds

I was going to post that, however, I thought it might be in bad taste . Good thing we have yo' ass laying around here....

I worship that movie!!! Some of my favorite lines:

"Halt.... halt... halt.... Will you please step on the same foot at the same time!!! My tits are falling off!!!!!"

and

"Don't get saucy with me Bernaise!"
