Don Smith is a renowned engineer/mixer and used to work closely with Eurythmics and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, amongst others.

Shoot - hope this isn't the last time we see those. If the seller's smart, he/she has made some copies.

Totally! I remember reading an article somewhere where she talked about this. Just tried to find it and all I could find was this quote -

BBC Interview with Nicky Horne ~ August 27, 1991
"What happened at the end was I was getting ready to cut two songs with Waddy Wachtel producing and we only had two nights to rehearse and Joe had been off in New Zealand or something and he came down about one or two in the mornting or something and he was real good friends with everyone in my band. That would have been fine any other night but I was really angry with what Joe had done because he completely screwed up that session. He just had everyone dying laughing because he just tells a hundred jokes and everyone was just rolling in the floor laughing and I was going “this is not fair” because he is not being sensitive at all to this whole situation and “you know I would give up anything for you, even my damned career for you if he was serious enough." I had a limousine and I asked Joe if he wanted to take me home or come home with him and he said, “well, I didn’t tell you this but I’m leaving for Australia like tonight and I have to pack so I’m just going to get a ride home with Waddy” and I said “ok” and started walking towards the door and I turned around and said “Joe I don’t like where this relationship is going cause it’s not going anywhere and I don’t want to do it anymore.” And I started walking towards the door and he said “well you know, if you walk out the door, you basically cease to exist.” And I just din't stop walking."

(That last line, incidentally, sounds like that awesome Love Is Like a River outtake- "walked out that door/just started walking".) Anyway I don't think this is the quote I was looking for exactly, because I remember her saying something about him being in a different city from where she was and he called her and asked if she would drive down to where he was, and she, having the feelings described above, said "That's a real long way to go to say goodbye," then hung up and wrote the song. Anybody know where I could be remembering this is from? :::going to search more:::

Edit-- Oh, except according wikipedia that JW song came out in '72. He did say the whole album The Confessor ('85) was about Stevie, though.

He said that the album wouldn't have gotten made without her, but he's never said any of his songs were about her. Indeed, if you look at the material on The Confessor, you'd be hard-pressed to associate much of it with Stevie. For instance, he explicitly said "Dear John" was about his former wife.

Joe rarely talks of Stevie, and only does so when asked direct questions about her.

Joe actually said some rude crap about her in the early 90s and made fun of her at his shows when he opened for the Doobie Brothers in 1990, but since he got sober in 1994 he stopped that kind of thing and now, on the few occasions he speaks of her, it's with fondness. I remember him calling her a "good witch" in a 2010 interview with Mark Lane that I'm having trouble finding, or I would link to it.

I'd like to ask him what he thinks about the things Stevie says about him nowadays! Surely he must at least be flattered.

(My apologies for going somewhat off-topic, but this is tangentially related at least)

Yesterday, I was mistakenly thinking they were Master Reel To Reels, thus imagining the enourmous expense involved in transfering them. Just cassettes is different, but still a lot to spend on things that are not described clearly. The Reel To Reels could not be listened to except on a very specific type of player, which not many people generally have, so we had to go with what the lables described, and sometimes they were different contents after the Reels were transfered in the studio.

With these tapes, they seem to be normal cassettes. Even if you no longer have a tape deck, you can buy a dirt cheap boom box at a pawn shop or something, to verify the contents. That could make them even MORE valuable, if you can label them as truly rare and of excellent quality sound quality.

About "TK1" and "TK2" ~ 20-something "takes" of "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" on the Masters is the same damned vocal as on the album. No "takes" are the slightest bit different regarding Stevie's vocals on that song. However, a different mixer listed on "I Can't Wait" surely does increase the probablity of these being actual outtakes, unlike all of those "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around"s.

That cassette was on eBay last August from a seller in England..it sold to a lady in Germany for a dirt cheap price ($20)..she outbid when I wasn't looking..I never got over it lol

Damn. I wasn't aware of that since it's included on a cd of mine released in'85. That whole relationship is still highly intriguing to me though.

Sorry for going off topic. I'm hoping that the seller made copies of these tapes before selling them. I didn't even know Ooh My Love was a RAL era song. This changes my entire interpretation of it.

I could swear I have a master-quality version of SDMHA with a totally different vocal. Remember, back in those days, they would lift a line or two from one take or another take, here and there, and "mash" them together into the final product. So there are likely to be scads of vocal takes of this. I will post this alternate vocal if I can find it when I get home...

I just googled, and Don Smith worked on much, if not all of RAL, so there could be some familiar mixes on these cassettes. But the 8:50 mix is intriguing since the longest remix on the official 12" single is 6:20. And I like that one of the cassettes is labeled with the word "vamp." And we all know how Mama liked to vamp in the halcyon days of RAL. I could just imagine 5 minutes of "Oooooh, we'ell... no, no, no, no, baby, I can't wait, alright! Yeah!"

Sounds like much of the RAL album.

"How do I love you? How should I love you? Where should I love you? What time should I love you? What was the name of that restaurant where I was gonna love you? Where is my klonopin I need to take before I love you? How many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop that I need to eat before I love you? Wait let me write a song about Lindsey before I love you."

Aw yeah!!! All of your posts lately are just so totally fab! Such fun to look forward to reading!

I have one alternate vocal of "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around", but a very muddled sound, and it is from one of the Master Reels that sounded terrible. Stevie sounds cool, but the sound is awful. But there are, like, twenty "takes" on the Masters that are exactly the same, only differences in mixing and sometimes with or without backing vocals. Believe me, I spent a whole Saturday night with a notebook and a 12~pack of beer, writing down the non~differences in each "take" of these 20 "SDMHA"s. It was sorta fun.

But, yeah, there is that different one... Post yours when you find it~!!!

I'm SO excited for In Your Dreams, but the lost Rock A Little songs are haunting me...

So, is one of us bidding on these things??? I don't want to up the bidding and start my own bidding, but no one's contacted me to tell me that they are, so I'm tempted to throw my money in for these things, so they don't get away again!

I think that's what she sings at the end of "Outside the Rain" on Red Rocks

Aw, thanks. And I know I'm going to learn a new tidbit every time you post. Your encyclopedic knowledge of the world of Stevie demos is uncanny.

I was thinking that it would be fun for each of us (on the Ledge, that is) to buy one of these auctions and then (assuming we can resist the urge to listen) we can agree to meet somewhere in the country and have a world premiere listening party of all of these unearthed treasures altogether. It really is like an archaeologist who discovers a new secret chamber in the buried city. We can have it catered and everything. Make it a red carpet event! But I must admit that the loss of the auction yesterday is a MAJOR bummer... now THAT would have been cause for celebration.

I used to be a Rocky Horror fanatic. And I'm not so much a collector of things as I am of music. So I never had to have the actual vinyl or a limited edition CD, I was happy to have a cassette (and now mp3) of whatever the track was. And I was always amazed when someone would play some super rare out of print recording of something but then refuse to make a copy. I mean, I could see if you were the artist and didn't want it circulated. But for a collector to get something and keep it to themselves just so they can feel superior over all the other collectors is really sad. How can it possibly make you happy to know you are making other people sad by withholding something from them?
