Bob Dylan Says Modern Music Is Worthless
Reuters LOS ANGELES (Aug. 22) - Bob Dylan says the quality of modern recordings is "atrocious," and even the songs on his new album sounded much better in the studio than on disc. "I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past 20 years, really," the 65-year-old rocker said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. Dylan, who released eight studio albums in the past two decades, returns with his first recording in five years, "Modern Times," next Tuesday. Noting the music industry's complaints that illegal downloading means people are getting their music for free, he said, "Well, why not? It ain't worth nothing anyway." "You listen to these modern records, they're atrocious, they have sound all over them," he added. "There's no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like ... static." Dylan said he does his best to fight technology, but it's a losing battle. "Even these songs probably sounded ten times better in the studio when we recorded 'em. CDs are small. There's no stature to it." Last edited by estranged4life; 08-22-2006 at 10:46 PM.. |

![]() Sounds to me like Bob has been listening to the wrong records for the past 20 years. Because arguments like that? Are bull****. |

as for the message... eh. i think he's referring more to the quality of and effort put into albums. i'm sure that he's very right about 95% of the albums that have slid off the shelves. a lot of popular music is manufactured to SELL and everything else suffers because of that.

Well if we're talking about sound quality, then I must also disagree with Bob. My remastered CD's sound WAY clearer than the vinyls.

![]() oh but PLEASE don't do that "rap isn't music" ... you don't have to like it, but that simply means it's not your taste. Rap, hiphop in general, it has changed and contributed a lot to the music of today, there's no getting around that. |

Also music is as varied and interesting as it ever was. No one should judge the music scene on what's played on mainstream radio either, that's a pretty small sample of what's going on at the moment. That said there are plenty of current pop tunes I love too. Back to the point, music has not gone downhill, just Mr Dylan's hearing it seems. There's nothing wrong with the sound quality to my ears. Maybe he needs to invest in a better sound system. Also if he dislikes CDs so much, I'm here to tell him that a lot of artists still put albums out on vinyl. The White Stripes even send all their review copies out on vinyl only.

why you gotta pick on my girl?
that's funny. personally, I would say that I agree that music has totally changed in it's intentions and the amount of quality music/artists is next to nilch, but that doesn't mean he can make a blanket statement like that. there have been numerous albums/artists with immense quality over the past 20 years. maybe not as many or as much as Bob would like, but that doesn't make it any less true. maybe he was just in a bad mood. |
