I kept thinking -- "Is this chick ever gonna grow up and talk like an adult?"

I don't take issue with her writing the book. Hey, I'm reading it. What I don't like is the writing style. She talks about the Rumours Europe tour and how frightened she is. And the sentence before that she says she and John had been to Europe twice and Japan once. She is only 23. That sounds a bit like she's more worldly that she will admit.

While with John, they had a child together and she carefully places it up for adoption. Wouldn't that be a life-altering experience , making one mature and take life a little more seriously? The way CAH writes, I keep thinking... "I don't think this puppy has his eyes open."

I just don't buy that this girl from Oklahoma was that naive'. When she spars with Stevie, is a full-blown ninja out for war.

Well, this is absolutely perfect, when you think about it. Much of the band, most especially Stevie and Lindsey, consistently say one thing and do another. And seem to have a shaky grasp on logic, to say the least. Really. I mean, how many times have we heard Stevie say, "I'm no rock and roll princess!" and the like? When she is the ultimate pampered rock star. She sounds worldy and wise on one hand, and then comes across later as completely out of touch with reality. Lindsey too has always gone back and forth with his art vs. commerce shtick, and is always referred to as being smart with money. Yet he lived how many years in a hotel? I could go on and on here with these silly things about all of them. But the truth is, I am not surprised that his long term paramour is coming off as maddeningly inconsistent and a bundle of contradictions. Look who she was keeping company with. She sounds as nutty as we have always suspected they are.
Oh, and I mean that in the best possible way.

Good point. She probably was emulating the company she kept.

I watched those 1977 Rumours Outtakes last night. No wonder the photos in CAH's book are blurry...it's like someone hit "freeze frame" and then took a photo of the TV set, and voila' we got some photos for the book.

I still haven't figured out the dust cover for the book... Why not a photo of CAH & LB? Didn't she have to pay somebody a royalty for using the photo she did? That would cut into the profits...or did she write the book for profit?

One last thing that irked me....CAH tells us her thoughts whenever she is around Stevie - and she is always the victim. It's like she is mentally preparing herself for battle...but the paranoia comes through:

"Stevie's out to get me."
"Stevie's out to get me."

Yet when Stevie talks to her, Carol Ann throws word daggers right back at La Nicks, so why all the paragraphs on paranoia?

(Is paranoia a side effect of blow? And the effects are still there 30 years later?)

I just got the book, and thumbing through it I thought the same thing. The picture quality is for ****. I like the layout - it is a nice change from that annoying photo section in the center of most books like this. But the photos themselves are high school yearbook quality. I was wondering if they were polarioids or taken with a 110 instamatic.

I thought the cover was odd too. I am sure it was used because it is a somewhat iconic photo of the band. It is more eye catching that any picture of her and Lindsey would be. It does, however suggest that the book is more about the band as whole than just her and Lindsey. I have yet to see.

And yeah, I am sure the photo cost money. I didn't check but I think it is Sam Emerson shot.

Of course she did, to some extent.

Yeah, coke makes people paranoid. Epically paranoid. I have yet to start reaading, but just thinking about it I can see why she would be defensive at least. I mean, who had the power there? It isn't like Carol was in the band.
And Stevie, in the Rumours era, was one the most famous women on earth. In arguably the most popular band on earth. So, that is a person you wouldn't want to piss off. Add that to what we already know about the infighting and egos present at the time, and you have a tense situation to begin with. Even without dating a guy and traveling with his ex.

As an aside, long term coke users and pot smokers I have known definitely exhibit long term personality changes. Way after the drug use has stopped. Permanent paranoia? Not so much. But altered personalities? Absolutely.

Thumbs down

Finally blocked off a couple of hours this morning and read the book, for free, at Barnes & Noble. I had previously read all of the posts on the Ledge before hand. Here is my two cents.

The book is not even a tell-all, it's a tell-on-you-and-you-and-you-and-you book. No one escapes her critical eye that's for sure. She has something negative to say about everyone except herself. As others posters have observed, she plays the hapless victim throughout, used and abused to the point that she is forced to finally walk away from it all, only to have Mr. Buckingham ride up in his White Porsche (re: white horse) an entire year later to plead with her, his Angel, one last time to "marry me." Read like a Jackie Collins novel. Yuk!

She spent an inordinate amount of time relating how she felt about Stevie's behavior at any given moment in any given situation not to have hated her yet she claims the opposite is true. And, the majority of her observations about Stevie were down right mean-way past negative.

It was, also glaringly apparent, that CAH still to this day, defines herself by the men she keeps company with. It was very telling, to me, that she made sure that everyone (including Lindsey) knew that she is currently married to a musician. Why else would she define her husband by his occupation on the dedication page? I'm sure that characteristic alone did not endear her to Ms. Nicks who is not defined by anyone and "stronger than you know!"

She childishly justified every immoral, or even amoral, activity that she engaged in, from placing her baby daughter up for adoption to bootlegging concert albums (A practice not only wrong, but illegal.), while mercilessly pointing out, every one of, the family-Macs' short-comings.

This book will definitely end up in the $5 bin within the year.

Yes, I vomited. That part was incredibly bad.

Throughout those entire seven years, Ms. Harris did nothing wrong. Or at least that's what she wants us to believe. It was always someone else. Sounds like someone else we know.

Certainly any woman deserves words of comfort and sympathy after a miscarriage, but in fairness, I'd be pretty pissed if I were in Lindsey's shoes.

I thought it was a great read regardless, and I even cried laughing a few times. It was ten times better than Mick's book. I was hooked from the first sentence to the last. This week I am going to go back through it and find parts (mostly Stevie mentions) that I really found interesting. My favorite thus far (I hope I don't get in trouble for copying this...I give her full credit!)

Beginning of chapter 2 page 6

The day after Lindsey told me about breaking up with Stevie, I was sitting on the floor in the reception room of Studio B when a tiny hummingbird of a woman brushed past me in a blaze of color, on a cloud of patchouli and ylang-ylang. I stared. I'd never seen anything so bright and dynamic before, so compelling, so intensely certain of the vibe she created.

I watched as she jumped up onto a scuffed, low table in the center of that dingy gray room with its shabby carpets and grubby open shelving, creating a stage, inviting an audience. She moved and spoke at lightning speed, sniffing, pushing stray locks of long, blonde hair out of her eyes, smoothing her peasant blouse, swishing her silken skirts to create a backing track as she started to describe her Acapulco holiday.

"Like...mystical...and the moonlight...and so translucent, and kinda deep dark, dancing under the stars, and the ocean, there, black and pounding -"

Words just poured out of her, words and sniffs, then after pausing, "It was life-changing. Life changing!" She sniffed again.

I'd just met Stevie Nicks. She was without a doubt the most mesmerizing woman I'd ever encountered. I didn't need to be told that she was a star. Her light was blinding. People gathered around. I sat transfixed, still on the floor, and looking up at this five-foot-nothing exquiste firebrand.
Thanks for posting that. Sounds like even when Stevie is oof the stage, she is still mezmorizing.

Why would you think that Carol Ann would pick this forum to lurk?

Carol Ann Harris is almost certainly aware of this website. Sara Fleetwood signed the petition that was up about releasing some of the band music/video in DVD form, etc a few years ago. (it's since been removed, btw). Who knows if they ever found "The Ledge," [The Ledge is just a small part of The Penguin, according to Marty] but there certainly are people in and affiliated the band who are aware of The Penguin itself. Some of them participated and contributed to this website, including John McVie himself:

http://fleetwoodmac.net/penguin/qa/

If you are relatively new to The Penguin, welcome. Read on.

But as to whether any of them actually lurk here, well, the web is a large open window. Some people must think "they" are lurking. I notice some Ledgies seem to post directly to Carol Ann Harris. I don't know who is 'out there.' I guess it's possible. Hi lurkers.

The book seems interesting. Thanks to those who posted the excerpts and just from reading them, 2 things bother me. Why is it when ever she mentions Stevie, she says Stevie Nicks? Does she refer to Chris as Christine McVie or Mick as Mick Fleetwood? For God's sake we know who you are talking about, you don't have to use their whole name. That was just bugging me. Secondly, we all know Miss Carol Ann did her share of coke too, hell Lindsey wrote a song about it. How does she remember all this? I have a hard time remembering yesterday sober.
But I might give it a shot.

I think I tend to say Stevie Nick. There's more than one John (McVie and Courage- who she calls J.C. somtimes) and more than one Chris (Nicks and McVie). You're correct: there's only one Stevie Nicks. No mention of Stevie Wonder that I can recall. Actually, you've been mislead. She doesn't always say "Stevie Nicks" all the time; maybe you only saw quotes where Stevie is referred to in her full name. Sometimes Carol Ann says Stevie, sometimes "she" (as in "SHE, who must be obeyed?" Sorry, very loose reference.)

In the book Ms. Harris says she made tape recordings of this time with her friend Sara Fleetwood. Lindsey actually stumbled across one (page 277) and flipped out.

But even without the recordings, or diaries (which a lot of people write in while going to therapy), Carol Ann did coccaine, not Quaaludes and alcohol which does leave blank out spots in one's memory. She mostly drank 7-up, at least early on, she writes . These people were all pretty irresponsible: drinking and driving, doing coke while literally on the road. I guess it's fortunate they didn't have cell phones as well at that time.

Rather than depend solely on a few posts, you can read the whole thing yourself. If you don't want to purchase it, maybe you can buy a second hand copy of the book or get it from the library eventually and get a fuller picture of what people are talking about.

You were thinking the same thing as I was, I noticed that too about her saying Stevie Nicks instead of just Stevie... and wondered why... it was bugging me too. LoL!!! Perhaps she's totally envious of Stevie and wants to keep everyone aware of who she's talking about... I dunno ~... Or she doesn't like Stevie and is being sarcastic by calling her by her full name repeatively... I thought it was weird too!!!

Well probably for a few reasons... But I was just being facetious and silly when I posted that earlier... LoL... I have no ideal if she is here or not... I was just getting tickled and laughing at some of the excerpts from the book, that people were posting at the beginning of the thread... and it crossed my mind: 'what if'??? To me it would just be common sense or common curiosity, that if I wrote a book about Stevie or Lindsey I would be at all of their web sites and message boards to see what everyone was saying about it... Or I would have someone there doing it for me...Wouldn't You???
And with this board being called ~ 'The LeDGe'...?
Just a speculation...
