That ones small compared to the ones I've seen, or rather, found in my shoe. Which reminds me, on my bikeride I stopped at the park to get a drink and jump out of the swings, and I saw the biggest, nastiest, hornety wasp thing ever. Ugh. Wasps are some of the few insects I cannot stand at all. I usually start screaming when they come around me and I totally humiliate myself.

Once, one horrible 8th grade morning. I felt something in the end of my gray vans, I take my shoe off, tap it, and lo and behold. I've never been so panicked in my life. I had to wake my dad to take care of it. He was mad. I'm obviously still deeply traumatised. Deeply. That is the ugliest, grossest but you will ever see. They're huge and bulbous. They're legs are thick. They have giant pincer looking things. Truly a bug nightmare.

They tend to stay underground much of the time, but they do come out (at nighttime) to look ugly. I've seen many around my dormitory and other buildings around campus. They have thing for Bermuda grass and centipede grass. They're crickets, actually...also known as mole or jerusalem crickets. Those the common names I've heard the most; I'm not sure why people started calling them potato bugs. There must be something about them I don't know. They're usually between 1 and 1 and quarter inches in length.


EDIT: Oh wait. I just found something that says they eat potato leaves. That could explain the name!
