Disease ridden varmints, all a you NZ ers are! Seriously, though, I wonder why that is? Kinda bizarre. Like Carrie says, we really don't get that here.
Most people here have Chicken Pox, that's about it. I'm not even sure if that is true anymore, it was when I was little.

According to Victoria you guys don't often get Measles either - but again we get it here. These viruses are usually found in children under 10 - which makes it even more random that I have got it now

You guys really get vaccinated? I mean, is it a requirement in order to enter kindergarten, or preschool, like it is here? (maybe just kindergarten?) I don't understand why more people get those things there.

Yeah, we get vaccinated for them all. Im sure you know this, but what most people don't realise is that getting vaccinated doesn't always mean that you won't get a different strain of the disease, or perhaps even the same one...

I will ask my mother (who seems to know everthing) about why we have it so commonly and you guys don't - it is indeed, very bizarre

Hoya... I remember getting the mumps as a kid. I feel for you, man. They say childhood diseases hit harder as you age. My mother used to cart us kids around to whoever's house had whatever disease was going around to expose us so we would get over the stuff as young as possible. We were vaccined at school too, but for other things like small pox and polio, that's about it. As a child, my daugther got vaccinated for all kinds of stuff; measels, mumps, rubella and others that I don't recall right now. Kids these days are getting vaccinated for chicken pox and hepatitis b in addition to all the others.... pin cushion is right.

I've been dealing with a kidney stone for the last two weeks... my first one. It is excruciatingly painful, as they say. I went to the ER, got jacked full of opiates, then sent home with Hillbillie Heroin (oxycodone.) So guess I'll join the "pain and agony" club.

Take an Advil and get better soon!

Oh man. I have had three kidney stones in my life and the pain is worse than childbirth. Drink water until you feel like you are drownDing..lol. Anything with caffeine, acid, etc, will make them bigger. The ER is usually good with stone..they gave me Dalaudid (sp?)...which is supposedly better than morphine. The pain went right away....

Vaccination 101.

Since the early 70's, in the U.S. all kids must have at least 1 MMR given AFTERtheir first birthday in order to go to school in NY - other states may be slightly different. If it's given when they're younger, the baby may lose immunity (since their immune system isn't completely mature.) Some states require 2 doses of MMR (the second dose is usually given around age 6, but as long as it's at least 30 days apart from the first, it's all good. And it can be given years apart, actually.) This 2nd dose requirement was mainly due to several measles outbreaks in the early 1990's.

Over the past few months there's been a mumps outbreak, esp. in the Midwest U.S. It's usually harmless, but can be dangerous in rare cases. Oh, and it sucks. Many people are now getting a second (or even third) booster dose of MMR due to this outbreak.

Nobody knows for sure why people are still getting these diseases if they've already been immunized, but it does happen. Maybe it's a slightly different strain, or the person's immunity faded over time. Plus, other nations are different - many international students come here with NO immunizatioons at all. Pretty scary. They're not exposed to these diseases in their country, but when they come to the U.S. they are at risk for developing them. Chicken Pox is a real bitch when you're a 20 year old college student.

As a kid in the U.S. in the 70's & 80's, we needed MMR (1 or 2), polio (series of 5), DPT (diptheria, pertussis, tetanus - series of 4) and that was about it. Since the early 90's, kids need those PLUS Hepatitis B (series of 3) & Varicella (chicken pox - series of 2), and some states require Hepatitis A (series of 2) and meningitis (1 every 5-10 years) as well, plus flu shots annually & sometimes a pneumonia vaccine. The new HPV vaccine is sure to become a requirement eventually.

Cost is another issue. Pretty much all insurances cover childhood vaccines, but if you're an adult & need any later due to travelling or exposure, many times you're SOL. Varicella is about $65 per dose, Hep A&B are $30 per dose, MMR is only $10, tetanus is around $20.

Part of me is thrilled that we're preventing disease, part of me thinks "it's just chicken pox, and where the hell would a little kid get Hep B?" So I'm a bit torn. Not like there's much of a choice anymore, most of these vaccines are REQUIRED by law to attend school. But again, I'm torn.

I have never heard of anyone actually having mumps either...I hope you feel better soon.
Chicken pox can be very serious if gotten by adult males...although the US vaccinates for the chicken pox now too. That vaccine is only a few years old though so most adults have probably already had the dreaded pox.
They've recently found that you need a booster for MMR in adulthood. I got one before I traveled to Kenya.

Sorry to hear you have the mumps, foxy!

I have a numb half face from a tooth repair I just had! It broke yesterday and they bonded it today. I hope it holds and I don't have to get a crown.

I'm not so sure about all the vaccines either. Weakend immune response is becoming a real problem, as is autoimmune disorders. They say vaccines are supposed to help, but do they really? I thought the immune system was strengthened by fighting different things off on its own. And how do we know what's really in those vaccines? Some vaccine manufacturers used mercury as a stabilizer and now the experts are saying they think it has helped cause an inordinate amount of autism in children.

I don't do flu shots anymore, even though I'm in the "high risk" category. Every time I've gotten a flu shot in the past, I'd get some autoimmune side effect several months later, but then that's me... I'm weird. I drink at least a liter of water every day, seems to help.

Does anything else work besides water to make it pass? I did that for a solid week with no luck. I also tried jumping up and down .. that didn't work either. ... it's stuck with ONE lousy millimeter to go. If it doesn't fall soon, it will have to be laser blasted. And there's another one, same size - 2mm, in the same kidney. I was told to cut my coffee consumption from two cups to one. They won't know what dietary restrictions will be until the stone is analyzed. That Dalaudid in the ER was great!! I agree the pain is worse than childbirth, which to me was like a very bad case of cramps, for 18hours. The stone was like a white hot searing stab of a knife thru your back kind of pain, but it was over as soon as that Dalaudid hit my system. I was sweating, hot flashes, weak, dizzy, nauseated, pale, high blood pressure, increased heart rate. OMG. Horrible pain and I was panic stricken because I had no idea what was going on. The ride to the ER was the LONGEST 10 minutes of my life. Thankfully there were only two other people in the ER that day, which is unheard of around here.

Okay, I'll quit... can you tell I was traumatized by this event?!

Edit: Feel free to PM... I wouldn't want anyone to think I'm hijacking Foxy's thread with my "stuff" or anything.

I don't know, my doctor always stressed water but I guess as long as it doesnt have caffeine or acid, you could try it. Cranberry juice is very bad because of the acid, that is good for bladder infections I think, but not stones. I had to have one lasered..its not too bad. Honestly, I pretty much begged them to do it after a week of pain. I had the same symptoms, sweating, rapid heart rate and high blood pressure, severe nausea, panic.......the experience is traumatizing! If I get the slightest pain in my lower back nowadays, I am terrified it is another stone. I get panicked.

Once it passes and they analyze it, you will know what caused it. Most are calcium phosphate stones and caffeine should be limited. The one bad thing about that type is they can reoccur randomly and once you have had one, you are prone to getting them again. I have had three in my life and dread the thought of another one. Just talking about it is making my hands sweat! It is the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. Childbirth was a cake walk next to a kidney stone.
Good luck and I hope you see something in your stainer soon! : > )
