My mother keeps bugging me (I'm 35) about when I'm going to cut my hair short since I'm "getting older." Now I have curly hair and my routine consists of a daily shampoo/conditioner, combing through my hair with the conditioner in, towel dry and some sort of curl enhancer (either spray or mousse) and then I just let it dry, That's it. I don't even own a hair dryer. Whereas my mother with her short do has to blow dry her hair and use product. Why should I cut my hair and create more work for myself?

Oh...and I'm getting grey in the front and she's aghast I'm not coloring it (like she does). I just can't be bothered with the time and the expense. I think I'm going to get a recent pic of Grace Slick and send it to her!
Grace looks great with the white hair. And you're too old for long hair at 35? Oh no way. Your Mom is going to have to back off! My hair routine is a lot like yours. Although sometimes I will straighten it. Other times I'll curl around the front with a big barreled iron to create large, loose curls. I need to use product because my hair will frizz without it so I'll use a straightening balm or curling mousse, depending on what I am going for. Smooth n Shine products that I get at Target are the best I've found. Today it was the mousse and air dry! I hardly ever blow-dry my hair.

^^^ I remember seeing Grace on (of all things) QVC a few years back selling some of her paintings. Her white hair was just hanging straight and loose down to about her waist and she looked FAB! I also remember the hosts being not quite sure what to do with her because she kept on swearing and saying, " I shouldn't have said that, huh?"

And my hair isn't even really "long," it's only about shoulder length. My conventional mother still just doesn't quite understand her unconventional daughter. She's always been concerned with "appearances" and "looking the part." But she's of that generation where women still seem to be shackled to percieved expectations. Not me, baby!

Funny you should say that. I was watching an episode of Gilmore Girls last night from Season 4. Lorelei has not had time to cut her hair and her grandmother tells her how awful it looks. She tells Emily clearly she did not tell Lorelei that her grandmother was coming or she would have cut her hair. I can't imagine. Although I did color my hair dark once and my grandmother said, "I liked it better light." quite curtly. Did she ever compliment me on it? Nope. Ahh the joys of family.

My Father's side of the family are direct descendants of Erik the Red (Also the Queen of Prussia), So maybe that is where the long hair comes from (That and being Cherokee).

Both my older brothers have long hair, my older sisters have long hair, and my Uncle Dennis (Who is about age 63) has longer hair than all of us. Funny, My Father had a crew cut and always had this to say about long hair "Long hair belongs on girls", wonder what he would think of his sons and his own brother?

Kinda funny, but back in the day when long hair was in I wore my hair short...Now the shoe is on the other foot.

As for me, I love women with long hair...Short hair doesnt cut it, man. I prefer the rocker-chick look, ala Stevie Nicks. the long locks get my attention each and everytime.

Have you ever had your stylist razor cut your hair? Razor cutting works GREAT on my wavy hair. If I see my stylist get out scissors I tell him to put them up and get out the razor. I have thick, fine hair and with a few whacks of that razor my hair is nicely thinned out with lots of movement and flippy-do's. I usually have a layered shag thing going on so the razor is a must. Anyway, you can get that thick hair thinned out if your stylist uses the right tools and techniques .

Deb, from the first moment we met until a few months before her cancer diagnosis NEVER cut her hair-A time period of roughly 12 years. Her hair was as long as she is tall (4'-11"). She is 43 and her hair is growing long again.

She cut it somewhat short (Shoulder length) to donate it to the organization that makes wigs for young cancer victims-Never knowing that months later she herself would be diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

During her chemo treatments people would ask her if she would do like other cancer victims and cut her hair before it fell out, She did not. which was fortunate since her hair did not fall out, which puzzled the oncologists (She asked my opinion and I told her "to wait and see IF it falls out, it may not even happen".)

She did lose hair in the back of her head during radiation treatments, kinda like a reverse Friar Tuck. More fell out for radiation than for chemo. It took awhile to grow back, so much that we asked the Radiology Oncologist when it would grow back, which he said it would in time. When it did grow back it was much thicker than it was before.

My hair is superstraight. I shampoo and condition daily. I usually give myself a deep conditioning treatment every few weeks with an intensive conditioning treatment when I go to the salon for trim every eight to 10 weeks. I do have a very slight wave if I do not blow-dry my hair. I don't usually blow-dry my hair during the summer months and I definitely don't on the weekends. I like both short and long styles on men, depending upon the condition. If it is soft, I'm putty.

Nooooo They tried that once it was a mess!! I have VERY thick Mexican girl hair - you can't do things to it like everyone else's hair - which is annoying. So I also have to be very choosy about hair stylists because the one who razor cut me didn't believe me when I told her my hair was different and it wouldn't fall all pretty - and it didn't - it looked horrible and I had to chop it ALL off.

I have no clue what I'll do with it once it grows out - and now people saying they don't like short hair on women makes me want to keep it short to spite society.

I have a rockin' short hair cut, and I've never been confused for a man

Well, you look great with short hair. Some women can pull it off!

My hair is different too. Most curly hair looks good when you use a diffuser. Not mine, it turns into a big poof. I had a hairstylist try it once and he was so embarrassed because he wound up having to wet it down and start all over! I don't think a razor would work on me either. Again, it would likely be a big poof!

is long, to spite society (Which is ever so f**king fun!!!!) perception of what a 36 year old man should do/look like/act like/listen to/blahblahblabbityblah. If society isnt down with that, I have two words for 'em "Suck It" (Cheap DX pop!!!)

While I do prefer long haired women, there are some who look great with short hair, so all is well

will be beating the ladies off with a stick in about 3-5 years, the pipsqueak (He'll be 10 at the end of this month) will definitely have the ladies with his long thick hair (A male Johnson family tradition that will live on)

Yeah - some women can definitely pull off short hair (I'm one of 'em) - but then I'm bombarded with men and women always saying, "I prefer women with long hair"

Gosh..maybe that's why I've been single so long now

Seriously though - I'm not going to grow my hair out long-long - just a little more length..it'll probably still be considered short by society's standards but oh well.

I get tons of compliments on my hair now, and I do like it - but the goo and all that is tiresome - and winter's a comin' so we'll see what happens with my growing it out. I've only had really long hair once in my life - mostly it's always been short.

Hair.......it has to be shoulder length...I do get it colored every 6-8 weeks in some shade of brownish-red. I do spend a bit on that but I am not a product person other than my shampoo and conditioner. No gel, hairspray or mousse for me.

Talking My Mother...

God bless her, liked my long locks. So when I am asked why my hair is long, my reply is simple "The last time my Mom saw me in this existence I had long hair, when she sees me again in the afterlife I'll have long hair".

And if people have problems with guys having long hair, dare I add that Jesus Christ also had long hair!!! Jesus Christ: Lord, Savior, Messiah and hair-farmer??!!! I wonder though, where He bought His hair products???
