It is such a conundrum for me. I think no onw has the right to take another's life. Yet, I would have killed the 9-11 hijackers myself had any survived. Moreover, if someone molested my kid, killed my partner, etc., I'd probably kill them as well. Thus, I am torn and mostly hypocritical on this point. I think I am so not alone in this boat.

Nope, you're not, I'm a thread hypocritical in this regard too. I was just thinking about that, how if someone were to take out Osama then I would jump for joy. That's different though because what he did was an act of war and not just a crime. He reneged on his right to a trial on 9/11.

However, people can't be trusted with others' lives in the manner they have to be to enforce a "just" death penalty. I think in theory it can work but in practice will always fail abysmally due to the inherently flawed nature of human beings. Everyone makes mistakes! But you cannot afford to when someone's life is at stake.

Exclamation I'm disappointed...

I was hoping perve-f**k would get life in prison so he would have to be put into general population...Then he would have to live the rest of his life looking over his shoulder wondering/waiting for the day that another prisoner "shanks" his happy ass out of this existence.

Giving him the death penalty is the easy way out...Make his life hell by paranoia in the general population is more my style.

What's the death penalty...lethal injection? If it is...it's too quick! You want him to suffer just like Carly did...his death isn't even painful...poor Carly...Rest In Peace...

I think we all have this instinct. The question is should we create policy based on a natural desire for revenge?

Then we'll be headed straight for Jamaica, mon! I went on a cruise once and we went on this glass bottom boat for an excursion. They had a steel drum band and did all kinds of group dances with us. That was the most fun! You could get your weak rum punch topped off with 151. Good times. Plus, its all on video!

True - but there is something that just feels right about it. I cannot fathom the pain that would be caused by someone murdering someone I loved and then seeing that person back out on the streets in 20 years when my person is gone. I know all the heady arguments about why revenge is never correct, why any and all taking of life is wrong, etc. But, in my gut, I am pretty sure I'd want them dead and I think 99% of the Earth's population would feel the same way. So, it is a little hard to argue that the 1% is 100% correct and everyone else is just vindictive. Again, I know no correct answer to this. I am just chatting about it because I think it is a complex topic and different perspectives are interesting to me.

Default Karma?

I saw the sentencing live. I love how the Judge went through a whole list of positive arguments - arguments against giving him the death penalty. He said things like, "The defendant has worked in construction, volunteering to help neighbors to build improvements which they could not otherwise afford. The Court assigns this: moderate weight. The defendant has written nice letters home to his relatives. The Court assigns this: LITTLE weight. The defendant has sought drug counseling. The Court assigns this: moderate weight.

And then he mentions how all of these things taken together are being weighed against what he did ( and what he has been found guilty of ) and basically says, "When balanced against that, all of those things count for NOTHING." YIKES I wanna shake that Judge's hand!

Anyway I think maybe he should leave his coat in the jail cell - he ain't gonna be needing it where he's going, it's gonna be a tad warm there.

Me too. I really see life in prison without parole as a much harsher sentence than death. Having to spend the rest of your life knowing you will never leave the building and enjoy any kind of freedom. And if prison is anything close to what is portrayed on OZ, then it is a pretty brutal environment. But then again, people fight their death penalty, so the instinct to live is huge.

I also can't see how one murder can be ranked over another. Some, like the one in this thread, are considered so horrible (which they are) that the death penalty is warranted. What about the other ones? They are less horrible? How do you decide? Someone makes a plea and offers some information on another crime and avoids the death penalty, while another person who has nothing to offer or gets a crappy lawyer gets executed. None of this seems like justice to me.

Well, I'm not saying I think this solves the problem or is the "right answer," but - if someone's son or daughter is murdered, it's the natural feeling of the mother and father to want to kill the person who did it. And - frankly - don't they have a right to that? At least from a certain point of view? You can't minimize what happened (and I'm not saying you personally are) - this person KILLED their DAUGHTER. Having the State do it for them after a fair trial keeps "revenge killings" to a minimum, and still gets the job done. And I really do feel the parents have some rights here, this guy KILLED their DAUGHTER.
Honest feeling on it.
The only thing that really throws a wrench in the works for me is this -
Obviously this guy has some kind of brain disease. Which caused him to do this. That makes the whole thing a LOT more complicated, i.m.o. But ultimately we're responsible for our actions.
Anyway that's my take on it, personally. It's sorta an "unsolvable problem" - but I guess sometimes you just have to take your best guess about what the "right" thing to do is.
