I love what he does, when I can hear him. He doesn't interfere with the song too much, and I like that. Very subtle.
Michael is a bit soft spoken and this was the intro to a very slow, serious song so I didn't get that feeling at all. If anything I got the feeling he was honored. This track is just gorgeous! Lindsey would have so fit in with REM. I've thought that before, but this seals the deal. The crowd was energetic and seemed very appreciative of Lindsey's contribution. Everybody Hurts is skipworthy? In my opinion, it's deeply moving and a song everyone can relate to. Not skipworthy in my book!

As for his performing with Sarah McLaughlin, why not? She's incredibly talented, he's incredibly talented. Why would he choose not to work with her? They'd make a good team.

I guess I contrast Michael's announcement with one he made when I saw them live. Someone who was obviously a good friend joined them for two songs on stage and it was nearly hysterical, so enthousiastic. He was giggling!

I don't dislike Sarah (not strongly, anyway...), but somehow I don't see the match. Also, it's quite absurd to try and persuade someone into working with someone else when he clearly doesn't want to.

Exclamation Straight to the source...!

How bizarre is life....?

I saw this thread yesterday & downloaded the song.

Today I was sitting next to Michael Stipe in a coffee shop, told him that I heard this performance yesterday (I told him someone sent it to me, i thought he might not like it much if I told him it's on general download!), and how much I loved this version as Lindsey's playing was so fitting to an already incredible song. He was very happy and thankful! A very cool guy!

What are the chances of that?!?! MUCH less than winning the lottery I would say!

That deserves some Twilight Zone music........very bizarre.......but very cool!

I'm assuming you were too dumbstruck to ask him how the solo appearance came about?

It sounded like "Lindsey! Fleetwood Mac! Yeah!" I laughed when I heard that I also thought I heard a girl yelling his name, but not sure.

Thea, I think when you see a performance and can see the characters animated it makes a big difference. I think it's hard to say how enthusiastic Michael was from audio only. As Seteca said, he's a nice guy so I don't think he'd mumble through Lindsey's introduction. Hard to say though. Plus, he got a front and back intro!

I didn't say I thought Lindsey should be forced to work with Sarah, but I wondered why he chose not to. Sarah would ruin Lindsey's style? I don't see how. She's a very talented musician and singer with a lot of style. I think if he'd chosen to work with her, it could have been a great collaboration.

I believe it was Coffee Republic and I'm glad I wasn't there with them 'cos I would have said something stupid like "err...umm... I really like the song These Days.."

What are the chances of it happening? Well, the chances of seeing Michael Stipe in a coffee shop in London are rare... The chances of seeing Seteca in a London coffee shop are statistically 100% if you are in town for a week or more
