R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts (Live Inglewood, CA Nov. 1995)

At last!

At buckinghamnicks.net you can download this version (thanks!!!!!) with Lindsey on guitar. And wow is he fitting in recognizably!!!!

wonderful feel, isn't it amazing that a simple tone can hit you in your sentiments immediately. The guy is a miracle.

I'm smashed.

Yes Strand SMAP is simply great, too. But don't you think Lindsey's sound fits in perfectly emotionally-wise in the hurt of this REM-classic? It just bulldozers into my soul.

Nancy, how did you find this? I've been searching for it for ages! You REALLY made my day!

I love this song too! I love his guitar outro. I found the concert on EasyTree as a bittorrent. I know there's been controversy about converting bittorrents to MP3, but I figured it wouldn't anger too many people if I just converted this one song, since so many people wanted to hear it.

shackin'up 02-16-2005 10:08 AM

Well, you made me f*cking happy with it. I love his first notes too: not a tone too much and perfectly matching the pain of the song. Brrrrrr.

Really nice. I thought he'd just be playing acoustic, not expecting to hear that lovely tone.

There were a bunch of threads about Lindsey's appearance (& his work with Michael Stipe) on the R.E.M. newsgroup in the mid 1990s:

Don't tell her Gerald, it will be so disappointing to hear I drag people to ****ty restaurants and crowded bars. ;-)

By the way, i love this song, so Nancy, thank you!
In the forums mentioned above it says that Peter Buck went into the studio where Lindsey was working on his solo album, to give him a pep talk and help him out of a writer's block. I can just imagine them... sulking Lindsey and a peptalking Peter Buck. ;-)

Wow, my first serious, music-related post on The Ledge... You guys mind if I stay?

Cour 02-19-2005 11:55 AM

It sounds great! Thanks to Nancy for converting the track and posting it

I remember hearing way back that Peter was working with Lindsey in the studio. I don't remember anything about a pep talk or a slump, more of guest star contribution and that the two of them were friendly. I also don't remember if the collaboration was pre or post Dance.

thea 02-19-2005 12:22 PM

I thought you said that some things are best left private. LOL
Alright, it's a deal. We'll stare at a wall together when I'm in Brisbane. As long as you don't make me sound like a celebrity anymore, OK? ;)

Cour, it was supposed to be pre-Dance. I wonder if any of the GOS songs still have Peter's contribution on it, assuming he played and didn't just come in to try out his motivational trainer's crash course.

Since "guest star spots" are coveted on any new cd these days, I wouldn't be surprised if anything Peter made a contribution to ended up on a new Lindsey cd. Of course that also would depend on whether that track/s ended up on the cd or if they were reworked without his parts as part of SYW.

Remember that old discussion about the label pressuring Lindsey to collaborate with Sarah McLaughlin? I don't remember all the details but I seem to remember Lindsey being against it and the label pushing it. I remember Sarah M was post Dance.

If Les is around she might have more information on both Peter and Sarah.

thea 02-19-2005 04:02 PM

Sarah McLaughlin? God no, I never heard that. Glad he didn't do that. I'm starting to understand some of the complaining he does about the difficulty of keeping your integrity...

(BTW, my English is failing me today. Of course I didn't mean I sound like a celebrity. :o )

Well, she wears hotpants, has long black hair and big yellow eyes, huge red lips that say "you won't dare, do you" and she's 9 foot tall. Hear that train coming?

Now, back to everybody hurts. What do you guys think of this performance and that of our man specially?

thea 02-20-2005 01:05 PM

Damn, he's blown my cover.

I actually think Michael Stipe's announcement is a bit tame. Like he's saying: 'oh alright then, come on up. Do me a favour and don't play too loudly'. ;) But I'm probably wrong.
I love what he does, when I can hear him. He doesn't interfere with the song too much, and I like that. Very subtle.
