Thank you very much for posting these Mike. It's a real treasure trove.
It's especially great to hear so many unfamiliar songs from this period. I'm surprised that a song as great as "If You Were My Love" did not make the actual album.

And I'm happy that the rather upfront drumbeats of the Johns Mixes were changed. The late Thom Panunzio did a great job with producing the final version.

I prefer the final mixes for the most part, but have learned to appreciate these others, especially those that are different recordings, not just mixes.

Stevie must've loved "Docklands" ~ she performed it in concert. I love the album version with her extra wails in the background, and the "Hold on..."s at the end.

Oh my goodness, I am so glad I didn't get the internet until '98, I would have been so saddened to read anything relating to this (it saddens me enough now!). How can people who call themselves genuine 'fans' say that they would rather Stevie died?! Shocking!

At the time I remember I was disappointed with SA but I didn't hate it! I thought that 'Docklands' was a bad choice, that the lyrics on 'Street Angel' were poor and that 'Jane' was kind of embarrassing but I didn't hate it.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, it helps us understand what utter pain Stevie went through because of Klonopin (while taking it, the detox itself and the vulnerability she felt after it). This helps us all understand why SA is the way it is!

Thank you Mike for your wonderful work with these unreleased versions and for all the fascinating insights into the background information, you are an angel

Have you ever driven around with the windows open blaring out the album version of "Docklands"? I recommend it! And when it gets to the end, with those crazy keyboards, and all the Stevie overdubs, urging to "Give me your hand! Hold on...! Give me your hand... I-I-I-I-I beg of you...!", just crank it and enjoy Stevie's voice and passion.

And Stevie did have passion on Street Angel. It's been 17/19 years ~ get over the disappointment that Stevie gained weight ~ damn! Stevie's voice on "Destiny", "Blue Denim", "Inspiration", "Love Is Like A River", "Rose Garden" (her self-harmonies!!!)... ALL are as impassioned as ever, and some with more emotion than Behind the Mask and The Other Side Of The Mirror.

I'm not saying I didn't have any disappointment with Street Angel back in June 1994, but it was a part of Stevie's tapestry. History cannot change. And I LOVE Street Angel, faults and all.

I agree with you about 'Behind the mask', it was lack lustre to say the least but I adore OSOTM (with the exception of a couple of tracks) as it's where I became a true Stevie fan And as for the weight that was never an issue for me, I was just happy that Stevie was still around and releasing new music!

I interviewed him on the phone here in Dallas in Summer 1996 for my Stevie fanzine Belle Fleur. I did 4 issues of Belle Fleur and then 4 issues of Mirror, Mirror.

I remember hearing about these fanzines but never seeing any of them. And I would be very interested in reading the interview with gordon perry. Are these fanzines (or just that interview) available here, or anywhere on the internet? If not, I wonder if people who have any of these old fanzines would consider scanning them and posting them in a thread here?
And thanks Mike, for all the SA info. I wasn't on the old AOL boards but did have to do a lot of Stevie-defending back in those days. I remember how eagerly I waited for Street Angel and how it just kept getting delayed and then when I finally got it, appreciating it for for all of its Stevie quirk-but knowing it was going to be a tough sell to the rest of the planet!

My copies are stored away in a Vault, along with about 15 years of other Stevie fanzines. I dug some out last year regarding the original line-up of Rock A Little in November 1984. I'll try to get at them again soon.

Mine embarrass me now. I was even more arrogant then! In 1995-1997, I was trying so hard to defend Stevie when EVERYONE ELSE wanted her to turn into, and I QUOTE: "Sarah MacLachLan, Tori Amos, Loreena McKinnot, Bonnie Raitt, ANYONE ELSE but STEVIE NICKS!"

Open any other thread here; you'll find the same stuff.

Mike, I couldn't agree more, I think the Street Angel era is easily one of Stevie's best vocal periods, certainly of the modern era (although I find that she's sounding pretty awesome now as well). I think she sounds great through most of the album, until we hit Jane of course.

And Stevie did have passion on Street Angel. It's been 17/19 years ~ get over the disappointment that Stevie gained weight ~ damn! And a big thank you for all of these great tracks, what an amazing find and great listening experience.

Here is a scan from Belle Fluer issue 3, the Gordon Perry info is towards the bottom.
Hope it is OK to post this Mike.
