Default Stevie to Perform in Europe??

In ar article published yesterday she said:

"I would hope and love to do a few shows in Europe. I don't know whether that'll happen or not. We're leaving tomorrow to do press in Europe and to do one big, huge show in [London's] Hyde Park, 55,000 people on the 26th of June. That's exciting. My band hasn't played that big of a show since like I don't know, Peace Sunday. That's a lot of people."

Fingers crossed that the press IYD and HRC date go really well and that we get to Stevie on this side of the Atlantic for full show. Its been so long...well 1989. I went to Birmingham and Wenbley and still have a gigantic t shirt I only found the other day! Weird!

Story by Christina Fuoco-Karasinski

Singer/songwriter Stevie Nicks was feeling down before her recent interview with SoundSpike. She'd just bid adieu to her Chinese Crested Yorkie before heading off to England to do press and perform another show with Rod Stewart.

"[The dog is] on her way to Phoenix as we speak," Nicks said via telephone from her California home. "Much to my heartache, she can't go to England. She's staying with [a friend's] mom and dad. You can't take [dogs] into England. We're going to be gone for almost a month. It's been a horrific day of saying goodbye to her. ...It's just so lonely. It's so quiet around here."

Nicks is touring in support of her latest solo effort, "In Your Dreams," a collaboration with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame. Prior to her visit to England, the Fleetwood Mac singer had to briefly put promotional efforts on hold, including a stop on "The Today Show," as she recovered from pneumonia.

Now that she's feeling better, Nicks is ready to promote her album, which features the single "Secret Love." She spoke to SoundSpike about her illness, working with Stewart and if there's another Fleetwood Mac reunion in the offing.

SoundSpike: So are you feeling better?

Stevie Nicks: You know what, I'm over the pneumonia, but I've definitely still got the residue of being that sick for three weeks. I was really sick. Having really bad pneumonia on the day your record comes out -- your favorite record you've ever made in your life -- really sucked. And having to cancel "The Today Show" in New York really sucked. I mean, that part of me was going, "Why are you doing this to me, God?" My mom said to me, "You know what? There's a reason. There's a reason. Maybe it's because you never take a break. Maybe the spirits were saying, 'You need a break.' So if we have to give you pneumonia and knock you down for a couple weeks, you're down." It was a hard three weeks.

Were you still ill when you performed on "Dancing with the Stars" [on May 17]?

I was still a little sick on "Dancing with the Stars."

You sounded great.

Thank you. I have been sicker than that and done concerts. That was on the end of the pneumonia. But had I had to do a bunch of songs, then it would have been a problem. Singing one song, not so hard.

Do you have plans to tour North America again soon?

I do, like more toward the end of the summer when it's even hotter [Editor's note: See itinerary at right]. Then we're off to Australia in November. We'll do probably two months here. When you release a new record, you never really know what's coming. I would hope and love to do a few shows in Europe. That's a lot of people.

You said this is your favorite record.

This is my favorite record, absolutely.

When did you start recording it?

Our last show was in New Zealand, Dec. 21, 2009, and I started in January 2010. I started with Dave Stewart. I started with a song of his, "Everybody Loves You." I wrote the verses. Then we wrote a song together, and that was the beginning. We pretty much recorded February, March, April, May, and then he went to Europe and got stuck in the volcano. We took May off, of course he would get stuck in the volcano. June, July August, August we took off to do six shows. And then September, October, November and we were finishing right about the beginning of December.

It must have been really inspirational to work with Dave Stewart.

It was great. It was the most fun I've had since I was a kid. He has that ability to really create a magical world. And we made this record in my house. I have a big two-story house which totally lent itself to being a recording studio. We turned the living room into the main studio. We did a lot of the vocals and stuff in the entryway because it's a big staircase and there's a very tall ceiling above the staircase. If you get right in that little nook, you get those amazing acoustics. So it was very much done like an old-fashioned album, like we would do an album in the '70s when we would rent a house and do a record, except that this was my house, which was great. We didn't have any time constraints or rules. It was pretty much like we could start whenever we wanted and finish whenever we wanted. Dave came up three, four, five days a week, and then me and the girls worked every other day that he didn't come up. We were totally multitasking with it so that we could kind of hit the ground running after the Fleetwood Mac tour. I didn't want to waste a lot of time getting started.

From what I could tell listening to the album, it seems like there were a variety of inspirations on the record.

Definitely. It's a very diversified record for me. I'm usually kind of locked on to one thing. This goes all the way from vampires to Italy, and from Italy to the blues, from the blues to New Orleans, from New Orleans to techno-pop "Secret Love," from "Secret Love" to "Cheaper Than Free," a beautiful country ballad. That's why I think I love it so much. It is very different. And it was very fun to sequence. Most people don't even care about sequencing anymore. [Colleagues would say] "Nobody's going to listen to more than three songs." [I said,] "I refuse to believe that. I am sequencing the record just exactly like I sequenced the 'Rumours' record." I believe that the sequence of the "Rumours" record really contributed to the success of that record. I believe the sequence of this record is going to contribute to the success of this record.

It's done well so far.

In this day and age, it's just kind of simmering in there and I'm thrilled. The record business is not good. The music business is not good. The movie business is having a hard time. The book business... we're all suffering from Internet piracy in a big huge way. I'm just having huge faith in believing that my little record is going to crawl up out of the muck and into the clouds and land in everybody's living room.

What was the biggest challenge in making this record?

Well, actually nothing was a big challenge. It was pure and completely unadulterated fun from the very beginning. Again, no rules, no time restraints. We weren't paying for a studio every day because we own this house. So you go into the studio and it's like 2,300 bucks for one day. [You can either] record at your house -- which has windows, a fireplace, air and a backyard, and room to move and breathe -- or you sit in a room within a room within a room and pay $2,500 a day. You can't really be too unhappy in that situation. If we decided not to go [into the studio] one day, myself and my singers, then we'd work. Nobody ever got mad. There weren't any fights. No arguments. It really frees you up to just be creative. Sometimes in the creative world, you spend a lot of time arguing with people about what kind of creativity you're going to do, how you're going to be creative and what you're going to create. When you're in a situation like this, we can't wait to start the next thing. "Let's hurry up and finish this song because we can't wait to finish the next song." Somebody like Dave Stewart is very conducive to that. He's like a kid. He's really 15. He rubs off on you. He has no rules and he believes you can do anything you want. He told me from the very beginning, "We're going to make a great record and it is going to do well and people are going to love it and you're going to be really happy." [I asked,] "Are you sure? I haven't done a record since 2001 and I'm totally afraid to do a record." He's like, "I promise. I promise. Trust me. It's going to be great." It's like driving down the street in a convertible next to the ocean. "OK, I'm good."

How was it to record with Lindsey Buckingham again?

It was very, very It was great. He kind of saved the day on "Soldier's Angel." I had written it in January and I had written it by myself at the piano, and that's all there was. Just that and me. We tried to cut it as a band and it didn't work. We tried to cut it with half a band. It didn't work. It was eerie, but not brutal. It was bandy and really good, but not about the war. It didn't work. In November, when we were really coming down the homestretch, I said to Dave, "I think I'm going to have to call Lindsey. I think he's the only person who can make this happen." So I sent him the demo and he studied the demo for a week. He came up into the world of Dave and Stevie. We went into the big entryway in my house and we cut it live. We played it, like, three times. We cut it live, live vocal, live guitar, and then he overdubbed some famous Lindsey-esque guitar and he put a harmony on it and it was done.

Speaking of Lindsey, I read there may be a Fleetwood Mac reunion in 2012?

There may always be a Fleetwood Mac reunion. Fleetwood Mac really never goes away. It's always in the wings. I did 83 shows the year before last. In 2003 and '04, into almost 2005, we did 135 shows. So it's always just around the corner. There's no reason not to have Fleetwood Mac. It's always there and it's always waiting. We try not to be overkill. We don't want to be so familiar with people. Fleetwood Mac's never going to play every single year. We don't want to be that available. We want to be terrific and great and feel new. So when we go out, we want people to have not seen us for two-and-a-half, three years. So we come back in big and strong, not like, "I just saw Fleetwood Mac last summer." It's a better way, because I have a solo career. It's always worked, since 1981, because I've been able to go back and forth. In the long run it has always served Fleetwood Mac very well that I had something to go and do, to take a year and a half off from Fleetwood Mac and to go back. If any of them had wanted to pursue serious serious, serious solo records, they could have. Lindsey made a couple of records, but he never pursued the "I'm going to do a record and I'm going to totally tour." He never really did that. They worked on music and took big long vacations. I went and did a record and did a tour and came back to them. It actually worked very well for everyone involved. For me, I get bored really easy, so I do two years with one group and then I do two years with the other group. It's like a relationship, you know. It's like having somebody be gone a week out of every month. My dad was gone for two weeks out of every month. It worked for my mom and dad pretty well.

I saw you perform in Phoenix with Rod Stewart. That must have been a great tour.

That was a lot of fun. I went out on the road having no idea how it was going to turn out -- and it ended up to be really fun. He is very, very funny and very charming. It was great. It gave me a platform to go across the United States and play in 18 arenas and play "Secret Love" and talk a little about the record. So when I saw him the last time, [I said] "If this record does well, Rod, I'm going to attribute a lot of its success to you because you allowed me to come and do this with you. And I want you to know how much I appreciate that because I really do appreciate that."

Yes, thank you. And I will be just heartbroken if she doesn't play even one solo concert in the UK. It's just ..... she has to!

I'd love for her to announce a European tour. I'm moving to England in October so the timing would be perfect!

She's said similar things so many times in the past 22 years that it's becoming insulting. Stevie, either play in Europe or don't. Don't tease loyal fans with constant maybe's - reward them for their patience and until you do then keep quiet. Sorry if that sounds harsh but I'm sitting at home ill and grouchy!

She is playing in Europe in like, a few hours FWIW I'm thinking there's a good chance of a tour here though (well obviously she'll avoid Wales but), considering all the press she's been doing and publicity she's been getting.

Yes, she is doing one gig in over 20 years today, which is great, but it's not part of a tour. I'm more annoyed that she has said time, time and time again that she would love do do European dates and yet never has since OSOTM. Until I hear differently I'll treat this quote as more of the same, which does not bode well for what she thinks of her European fans that she has continued to dangle the chiffon draped carrot of live dates for so long. I don't just mean The UK either.

I hope that I'm being far too harsh and sometime soon I am eating my words!

One show in Holland, or in Germany within driving distance, that's all I'm asking.

I agree with Dodfather that it's exasperating to hear SN express a hope to do something that she could make happen. Aim at small-capacity, prestigious or unusual venues where people will suck up high prices for a special experience (Edinburgh castle, cough cough). Strip the band back. Get someone interesting to open for her, either up-and-coming or another cool heritage act. But, above all, commit to doing it even if she can't get guarantees from the promoters, even if it's she who has to underwrite them. Put your own purse on the line for your art and your fans, Stevie. It can take it.
