As far as I know, unemployment insurance is paid for by the employer's payroll taxes - not the taxes of the general public. It's not welfare.
I didn't say it was welfare. But you're right, I made a hasty comment that wasn't correct - unemployment insurance is not directly paid for by those of us who are working.

As for your first comment - of course you aren't forced to work anywhere & should be able to choose. But some people do consider it irresponsible to quit a job without another one lined up, esp. in this economy.

I'm in the middle of being let go from my job. I've been off 6 months after a (work comp) shoulder surgery. They called me a month ago and told me that my position has been back filled and I have 16 weeks to find a job internally. After that, if I don't find one internally, they'll give me severance and send me out. I've been there 11 and a half years... Scary. But I've put up with some really bad **** in the past 3 years there, and I don't think I should let myself get worked up about it anymore. So, I'm fulfilling what I've always said I'd do if I ever quit my job... I'm going to school in the fall. No one should have a job that they absolutely hate.

Another time I wrote a resignation letter saying I was wasting my life, and that there was no point in being miserable for a paycheck. I still believe this, by the way - yes - money is important and necessary in our modern world, but later in life when you're old or dying, one of the worst things possible would be to look back and feel like you wasted your life doing something you hated, for someone you didn't even like only to feel unrewarded at the end of it all. You can never make up that time. You only get this one life. Make the most of it. No job is worth being unhappy for, and no job is worth looking back years later and feeling regret over, regardless of economic conditions.
Yes. Someone finally summed up exactly how I feel.

I agree with this as well. I've planned to leave my job for almost 3 years now. I was just waiting for the opportunity and the right time to leave. RIGHT NOW is my opportunity and right time. And I'm SO looking forward to it. I feel like I can't plan anymore than I already have. It's go time.

Meaning you'll still have enough to send me palimony checks, right?

I hope the shoulder is good now. Was the injury job-related? In the words of my new favorite, Kathy Griffin, they can "Suck it."

I'm so excited for you. Sometimes getting let go truly is a blessing. I was laid off from a job at a dying company in the past, and once my round of layoffs was over, morale was awful. I knew I wouldn't have wanted to be there. It was scary and I was off for a long time. But I found another job, much better suited to my skills and talents, and life is better for it. One day you will look back on this and be so glad the nightmare is over.

It's go time! I like that. So many of us are struggling with doing the work of 2 or more people, flat pay or even pay cuts, and the looming fact that we could lose our jobs at any moment. We really do have to live for right now and not some hazy point in the future. There is no such as job security but we can find security in our own abilities and persistently find ways to create income. Once we find our cojones it all falls into place.

I have a friend on FB who is training to be a nurse and I'm sure she'd lend an ear when you needed it. I think you're talking about nursing, is that right?

I've been thinking about going back to school myself. I like what I do but I think I am supposed to be serving the greater good better than by editing computer software textbooks. I definitely don't want to be a nurse because of the lack of respect and inherent sexism. That would drive me out of my mind and I have the utmost respect for nurses. With all of that responsibility nurses deserve all the respect in the world as far as I am concerned.

It is job related. And yes, they can surely suck it! 11 and a half years, and this is what I get to put up with.

Thank you so much, Suze... Yes, I still want to be a NICU nurse. I could work with the preemies all day long.

This is why we need to be loyal to ourselves first because even after years of loyal service many employers will show us the underside of a bus in heartbeat.

They sure did show me underneath a Greyhound! Lmao! I still on occasion talk to Sara's NICU nurses, and my friend just had preemie twin boys in the same NiCU Sara was born in. Loved going to see those boys! And the nurses still love their jobs!

I know you have, and I'm finally not terribly nervous about it. Thank you Janet.

It's gotta be great witnessing miracles every day. My sister-in-law's sister just had a baby boy last night. She never intended to have children but that all changed when our nephew was born in Nov 2009. She and her husband are so happy and blessed. You will be witnessing this often.

That would be a hard situation for me. I have never seen Stevie before, but I love her more than anything in the world & if she was close I would do everything I could to see her, but lose my job? I would have to think long & hard about it, and what Stevie would think of me, because that's important to me.

Hope you find something else soon!
