Before it dropped off the Hot 200 altogether Heart's "Red Velvet Car" had sold somewhere around 55,000. Albums do continue to sell after they drop off the Hot 200 of course, albeit slowly....so I don't really know what it's at now. 60,000 perhaps?

With "Trouble In Shangri-La" Nicks had hit around 180,000 after 2 weeks and that album ended up going Gold at about the 6 week point. I think "In Your Dreams" will definitely top 200,000 eventually since it's at 100,000 after 4 weeks. In order to go Gold it would probably have to sell close to 300,000 - As we've seen with "Street Angel" an album can be certified Gold even if SoundScan sales numbers are less. In the case of "Street Angel" I think the SoundScan sales numbers were 230,000 but we know that the album was certified Gold.

I do think several more promotional singles should be rotated off the album after "Soldier's Angel", particularly "Moonlight".

Aretha Franklin's first album of original material in eight years ( "A Woman Falling Out of Love") was also released on May 3.

She did the talk show circuit, performed a (terrible) new song and if time allowed, "Respect." She was partnered with Walmart.

The Queen of Soul proved to be no match for the Queen of Rock. Aretha debuted at #54, selling a mere 10, 070 copies and 13,500 copies to date.

Ironically one of Aretha's best selling albums (ever?) was Who's Zoomin' Who?, which was co-produced by Dave Stewart. Looks like she needs some of that Dave Stewart magic again.

I was surprised to discover that Aretha doesn't have a great track record where album sales are concerned, but she has sold millions of singles. I saw her for the first time last year at Boston's Wang Center (3,50o capacity) and it was 65% full. Dull show. Didn't even stay for the encore.

It hasn't performed particularly well in all to date..considering ''who'' she is.I mean, her sales are good enough for me to consider it a success but industry types..casual fans, blah blah and all that I think they would see this as a flop. They NEED a video out and a song on radio NOW.Otherwise it's just gonna sink even more.
It's released in the United Kingdom this month let's see how that goes.

Keep in mind album sales suck all around these days. In fact the industry is selling HALF of what they sold a decade ago. This explains how Stevie's previous albums sold more but charted lower. This age of being able to download pretty much ANY album for free has taken a HUGE bite out of sales.
Stevie sold 50,000 copies her first week. Not bad for an artist who's peak was thirty years ago and hasn't a new album out in a decade. In contrast the #2 album last week was Brad Paisley's "This Is Country Music" which sold something like 120,000 copies and this is a guy who is riding his wave now.
If you look at the other classic artists on the chart now, The Cars, Paul Simon, Steve Miller etc, Stevie is selling right along with these people, she's actually doing better.

Exactly. Also, Stevie debuted at #6 with very little first week promotion. Jennifer Lopez, also riding her wave right now, debuted at #5 and promoted the hell out of her album and also had one of the biggest platforms in the world to do it...American Idol. So, Stevie is still holding her ground and topping the charts along with the contenders on the current music scene.

Only two albums have sold over a million copies this year (Adele's "21" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way') and we are only a few weeks from the halfway point.
Katy Perry's album has been out for nearly a year and even with four number #1 songs, countless magazine covers, Grammy nominations, and sold out national tour, it has only moved 1.5 million units.
Adult Contemporary radio used to open its arms to music from artists over 50, but not any more. There's almost no difference between Top 40 and AC, where now you'll find Pink's "F**kin' Perfect" and CeeLow's "F**k You" in heavy rotation. I'm not kidding.
And check out some of the music message boards such as spillitnow or Flopofthepops, Pulse Boards, etc. These young internet saavy kids are also music biz saavy and they rally behind their faves and they go to war.

These kids don't even call themselves "Fans," they've adopted the term "Stans,'" an obsessed stalkerish fan taken from the Eminem song "Stan" where he stalks and kills his wife. "Stanning" is the active form, which is any kind of action that relates to the promotion or advocacy for a performer or belittling the standing of another performer. These kids would cut off a hand before they posted a negative word about their personal favorites. Some of it is hilarious, but this kind of online activity is results is trending topics, etc.

yeah, I have noticed that. The music business is doing only around half of what it did 10 years ago. TISL sold 109k the first week, and IYD sales 52k which is just like the music business. I think in a few years IYD may get up to 300k which is half of what TISL did. Unless, she pull a miracle. And it looks like there is no second single and the promotion has stopped, including the tour.

Promotion hasn't stopped. There are new magazine articles landing every week (in the past ten days national glossy mags Nylon, Bazzaar, Jalouse, & More) gay glossy Next has her on the cover, a flood of on-line interviews; the Glamour event & red carpet shots will keep offering dividends;

BBC Radio just A-Listed "Secret Love," which means its going to receive the same amount spins as new singles by Adele and Coldplay on the top radio station in the U.K. B & C list songs receive lesser rotation.

http://www.eurythmics.me.uk/2011/06/...from-saturday/

Another single is coming. There will be a tour. She's outselling Aretha Franklin's new album - released the same day as IYD - 5 to 1. IYD has already outsold the last two efforts each from Pat Benatar, Heart, Tori Amos, Cyndi Lauper, Deborah Harry, Linda Ronstadt, Joan Jett, etc.

Lead editor on the documentary Shane McLafferty - he actually directed "Cheaper Than Free" and was lead editor on "Secret Love" - is juggling Dave's documentary and Stevie's, which is now being augmented by the Wiltern Show. The cancelled NY show was to be filmed for inclusion. It's cancellation threw off the schedule.

On the remix front, Tracy Young might just have some good news for me when I see her on Sunday. Her remixes of "Planets" and "Stand Back" appeared on the commercially released singles.
