I know right? I listened to Rumours this past summer when I was rebuilding my Chevy 350 small block muscle car and putting a new tranny in my Cutlass. But...I guess a tranny is a tranny is a tranny....

I realize that she probably gets asked the same questions over and over again so she probably has preprogramed responses to several questions... (lord knows we've read them quite frequently in numerous articles so much so that we tend to dissect articles for any tiny sliver of new information of juicy tidbits...). So I can't really fault her for that; I think anyone who is asked the same questions over and over would do that.

But I guess I would just like some acknowledgement from her that alludes to the fact that the participants of night of 1000 Stevies represent a mere faction of her gay fan base, and probably a very small one at that. I mean surely she knows that being gay is not synonymous with being a drag queen or at least dressing like one for a party. I don't know, maybe I'm overanalyzing...

Other than NOTS, do you know of any tangible manifestations of Stevie's gay fanbase? She isn't an icon in the vein of Barbra or Liza, or some kind of disco diva like Kylie or Madonna. Being a rocker, a very sheltered rocker at that, she probably really didn't know much about the extent of her gay following until recent years. NOTS is not just identifiably gay because it features lots of drag performers. It is a direct outgrowth of the NYC queer punk scene. In a way, Stevie's appeal was so straight and mainstream way back in the day that it was almost counterculture among the hipster scene to admit to being a fan; it was way tacky but cool in a twisted, ironic way. NOTS was never about adoring, twirling chiffonheads wearing moon pendants and shawls. It was equal parts parody and homage- a loving ridicule of a woman who was unbelievably eccentric and tacky at times, but so strong and talented too. It's a very gay thing to place someone on a pedestal and then rip her to shreds.

The only thing I would mention is the chart positions of the Planets and Stand Back remixes.

It certainly wasn't straight dance clubs that got those songs to number one on the dance charts....but that's not something I would expect Stevie to really be aware of.
