Default Smaller Labels

I saw that Paul Simon was on the Hear Music label. I wonder if Lindsey had the opportunity to speak with him while in New York? I also thought it would be interesting if Lindsey could get on with Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records. While it doesn't fit their mold, I think Lindsey would be a great influence on (and possibly produce) some up and coming artists. Would love to hear Jack cover Save Me A Place.

A couple things to think about/remember:

1) Lindsey needs a new, fresh start, be it a new label or doing it himself. WB has done NOTHING for his career in the last 20 years!

2) I'm pretty sure SWS will come out as a solo album....there seems to be a lot of advance hype for it, and if there's tons od positive vibes for both SWS and IYD, well, that just sets the stage for a VERY strong FM album!

3) Which would put the band in a VERY nice bargaining position (last week's sales of RUMOURS wouldn't hurt either!!)....when they go shopping for a NEW LABEL.....remember, both Lindsey AND the band have severed their ties with WB, and after the horrible job WB did working the one-shot deal for SYW, I SERIOUSLY doubt the band would EVER re-up with the label. (They'd be damn fools if they did!).

4) Between "Glee". "American Idol", "Dancing With The Stars", tons of press, a tour next year and (maybe) a new album, this group (and it's members!) isn't going anywhere!

While I wouldn't push for Hear Music label ~ Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, Paul McCartney and Antigone Rising have all had a bad time with the label ~ I like the Brushfire idea. I think the idea of Lindsey being a big fish in a small pond is a good one!

I would hardly call Lindsey saying they are "free agents" a permanent severing of ties. Their catalog is there. Is it possible they end up on another label? Yes. Is it likely? I wouldn't be so sure about that, especially for what is more than likely their final album.

The fact that their catalog is at WB means nothing...they get paid no matter where they're at! Wouldn't it be better to have both money from the catalog AND a successful NEW album coming in???

Oh, I wasn't aware that they are guaranteed a successful new album as long as it's not with WB. My bad.

If the catalog didn't matter, they would have left a long time ago. There usually is a sense of loyalty, of it being "family". Of course, maybe Warner's dropped them. It wouldn't be the first time veteran artists have gotten the boot at a major label...I can name a ton of country artists that happened to. Johnny Cash, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers...they couldn't get major deals. But, it wasn't their decision to leave.

By the way, I'm not sure how long ago the site was updated but the WB website has finally been updated and Stevie is listed on the roster, but FM and LB are not. That makes it a little more official in my eyes.

There's no guarantee on anything nowadays, particularly for a band who's members are all over, oh, I don't know....30!!!!
But I think a new label would be much more willing to work the band than WB.....signing one of the biggest bands of the last 50 years would still be a MAJOR deal!
And don't forget.....FM has parted ways with WB twice before....they were dropped by the label after TIME, then honored their three album deal after re-signing in '97 with THE DANCE and the double GREATEST HITS.
That's why I was so surprised to see them do a one-shot re-up with WB for SAY YOU WILL, especially after there was interest from other labels. But this band has always been made up of creatures of habit, particularly the girls and Mick and John!

Does Lindsey have the option of saying to a record company (like Interscope, for example): release my new album and you will get a new Fleetwood Mac album?

Imagine paying $1000 to hear "Don't Dream It's Over" instead of "Go Your Own Way"

Fleetwood Mac helped me through a time of heartbreak. 12 years later, they broke my heart.

Could he? Yes. He has been their producer. He may hold a lot of power. Remember in DR when he told Mick that he had the masters, maybe he'd just do something else with his stuff and Mick got sort of scared. Of course he did! He doesn't write, produce, architect or play a lead instrument. Lindsey holds the key to any future Mac project if it includes him and Stevie...

It doesn't have to be tied to a solo release for him to use that as a bargaining chip. If I was him and could negotiate a really sweet deal for myself that way, it's definitely the road I would take. Poker.

The timing on GOS was obviously off due to all the politics/transition in WB at the time. But, why didn't LB go to another label with it then? I'm sure someone would have wanted to capitalize on his new found notoriety. And, why didn't he release it before UTS since it had been sitting on a shelf for so long? I'm not sure WB is totally to blame for all that.

So, we'll see what happens.
The truth is he lost his power in this world, and the rumours are flying...

Well, it would have to be a record company that Stevie also approved of, Mick and John being a softer sell. I could see him having leverage that way -- and I'd guess he has used the FM ace in the hole as leverage with WB in the past. I don't think the rest of FM would be onboard if he found another random label. Of course, Interscope is a record company Stevie'd be happy about. If he decided he wanted to go to Koch, I don't know if part of FM (Stevie, Howard and company) would trundle along happily.

He should go with a label the would be thrilled to have him and his album.

Nonesuch and New West would both be much better than a large label that is looking for talent of a younger or more salable nature.
