I wonder if having Paul in the same skit made it a bit more fun for Lindsey.

^Nice cap. I had forgotten to watch the show to see if he came on with the rest of the cast at the end.

A friend of mine tweeted (twice) thusly on the subject:

@koolfresh Ben Kessler
Check out Paul Simon’s face while Lindsey is playing. He’s thinking “so beautiful!,” not “so what?” http://is.gd/4gGU4i

@koolfresh Ben Kessler
Props to SNL for giving Lindsey Buckingham a mini-musical showcase while not letting the Glee kid utter one word. http://is.gd/4gGU4i

What Up With That?

It’s always great when Paul Simon is the musical guest on Saturday Night Live but when he plays the role of the good sport in a zany skit, it’s that much better. This week was his turn along with Glee’s Chris Colfer to take the hot seat in the ongoing and going What Up With That. For two years, we’ve been watching the same bit. Guests who have included everyone from Al Gore, Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro, appear on the panel alongside the show’s silent fixture Lindsey Buckingham (played by Bill Hader), and never get a word in thanks to host D’Andre Cole’s (played by Kenan Thompson) uncontrollable outbursts of song. But this week offered one big exception. They finally got the real Lindsey Buckingham to show up and riff and really, what’s not to like about that? Whether you find this gag funny or beaten into the ground, you’re gonna have to sit through it just to catch a little bit of Lindsey’s “Big Love.” He’s someone we don’t see nearly enough and it even looks like Paul Simon is diggin’ it too. And word is Lindsey has a new record in the works and he’s thinking about kicking up the old band. We’re down with that!

Then we've got yet another edition of the ridiculously overused "What Up With That" sketch, which I am only noting because after months and months of Bill Hader's silent Lindsey Buckingham impression, the real Lindsey stopped by to drop a little Fleetwood Mac action on the set. (He played guitar, you weirdos.)

For those who're interested, a 1080i HD version of all of Paul Simon's work on the SNL show, including a HD video version of the whole "What Up With That" skit with Lindsey, is currently on Dime.

As the second person ever to host Saturday Night Live since first premiering in 1975, Paul Simon returned to Studio 8H on Saturday, this time as the show’s musical guest, but not without appearing in a few hilarious sketches. Paul turned on his soft-spoken, witty charm that started the show off on a high note before playing two musical sets from his new album So Beautiful, So What.

See Paul Simon banter with the best of late night’s sketch comics, plus see a surprise appearance and guitar solo from the one and only Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac on Saturday Night Live!

Both appearing in the recurring sketch “What Up With That,” Paul Simon and Lindsey Buckingham (along with Glee‘s Chris Colfer) rounded out interruptive host DeAndre Cole’s celebrity guests. If you’ve seen the skit on previous shows, you know that Lindsey is always a guest on the soul show, but is never given a chance to speak; a wrong that Paul Simon so politely tried to make right during his appearance.

But this time, the real Lindsey Buckingham appeared on the show and laid down a rockin’ guitar solo before standing side by side with his impersonator, Bill Hader. Watch the skit below!

Paul Simon and Lindsey Buckingham
Rock legends get silly on 'SNL'
May 16, 2011

On this weekend's episode of Saturday Night Live, musical guest Paul Simon turned up on "What Up With That?," one of the show's most reliably amusing recurring skits in recent years. This sketch wasn't quite like the others, though. Whereas most of them follow a simple formula – Kenan Thompson's talk-show-host character Deandre Cole spends far too much time in his show singing his theme song, resulting in regular guest Lindsey Buckingham getting bumped at the last minute – Simon went meta and pushed the host to chat with the Fleetwood Mac guitarist. Of course, then the real Lindsey Buckingham turned up and things got even more silly. Check it out.

What’s up with that (Must watch)

Those small taps of the symbol can only mean one thing. What’s up with that? The BET show that has a catchy theme song that never seems to end. Tonight’s special guests Paul Simon, one of the Glee kids, and of coarse Lindsey Buckingham played by Bill Hader. These sketches are so repetitive but I always love them. Just watch Jason Sudeikis dance and tell me it doesn’t hypnotize you. Ed Helms appears in this sketch as Captian Sexy banjo and wow, Ed Helms can really wail on that banjo. Then the real Lindsey Buckingham shows up and plays his killer guitar section from Looking out for Love. One other thing to watch out during these sketches, how progressively sweaty Kenan Thompson gets.

Lindsey Buckingham... FINALLY on SNL... Persistence Does Pay Off

Not only did Lindsey finally show up on Saturday Night Live tonight during the skit 'What Up With That' but he played a little bit of "Big Love"... During the segment Bill Hader began as usual sitting at the end of the panel silent of course, never getting the chance to speak... Bill Hader has been portraying Lindsey sitting in along with two other guests who are the real deal during the Keenan Thompson singfest since the 2009 season. Tonight Paul Simon was the musical guest along with a cast member of GLEE and spoke briefly about his album and made mention of the fact that Lindsey never gets to speak... Shortly there after Keenan Thompson, says something along the lines that he didn't know there were two Lindsey Buckinghams... Then out pops Lindsey strolling on stage, guitar in hand...and plays "Big Love" (no singing). At the end, the real Lindsey Buckingham DOES end up speaking and the Bill Hader version of him still remains silent.

Great stuff!.. Lindsey looked good. Bill and Lindsey were dressed identical in what Lindsey typically wore during the 2009 Unleashed Tour - red shirt, jeans and black leather.

Whether this was a calculated move on the part of SNL to get Lindsey to appear or not, I have no idea. Bill playing LB is so random during this odd segment, that maybe that's the punch line.. If it was calculated, their persistence payed off! All in all it was great to see Lindsey FINALLY appear... Hopefully he'll get invited back next fall when his album "Seeds We Sow" is released in September.

Also, during the first airing on the east coast... Lindsey was trending on Twitter which I don't believe has ever happened!

Never in my life did I envision two of my very favorite of ALL TIME musical artists coinciding with one another in such a way. But now I want Paul and Lindsey to work together and create some flawless music. Both those men, if any of the musical legends living today, could create something truly stunning together.

Has anyone bought Paul Simon's new album? GO GET IT. Ugh, I love him too much for words. Such a brilliant songwriter with a catalog of songs today's "great artists" would claw each other for.
