Default Jonathan Todd/Fan Club - what happened?

What exactly happened with the fan club that everyone is so up in arms about?

Start with the locked thread above called Fan Club and presale FAQ. Then read some of the other threads that mention fan club or Jonathan Todd, and you'll get the drift.

It's one of the locked threads in the main Rumours listing. Go one screen back to the list of threads. It's there near the top.

One can always make a quick summary:

Let's see...Jonathan Todd also known (on Mick's Chat) as "The Knight" basically runs the message board and Fan Club. When the idea of the fan club was presented it made all sorts of promises to do this and that and it was $60 or $80 depending on when you signed up.

So, people signed up.

One of our first perks was a pre-sale. The pre-sale was in fact, a pre-sale, however the assigned times the Knight gave for starting times were incorrect so some people were hours off. Also, many were offered what might be considered crappy seats only minutes into the sale, which contradicts what was promised as what--the "best 20%" or something like that? So, people weren't happy. Also problems with password, and e-mail notification.

Quite a few pre-sales followed, all with problems, none more hectic that the first though. Since that point the Knight has remained somewhat behind the scenes. Few posts, even fewer e-mails. So, members of the Fan Club are stuck not only with seats they dont' really need (as the public sales revealed better seats), but promises that weren't fulfilled and a website with little to no content.

Also, there's that deal about the e-mail and the UK Fan Convention that is really, in my opinion, the top of the whole thing. Basically, all that needs to be said is that the e-mail was sent to the wrong person and the Knight messed up. No hiding behind that.

There's probably some more, but that's about gist of it.

Edited to say: Oh yeah, the whole "banning" thing on Mick's Chat. Quite a few people (some of whom post here) were banned for what appears to be no reason at all, and their IP addresses were blocked so no one really knows. There were quite a few others, I might add, who don't post here, who were banned and came to the board only to be negative--and by negative I mean, as negative as you can possibly get in terms of insults and name-calling, you know, the really petty things--and they were banned as well. In my opinion, the majority of those banned form the latter.

In my opinion, the majority of the banned were the former. Few, if any, posted something that would have gotten them banned at any other site without warning.

Everything else you've posted sums it up pretty well, without going into the detail found in the actual posts on this subject.

The one subject that I suggest you read in detail is the one about the message sent to the UK fan convention representative.

This person was sent an email from Jonathan Todd which was sent by mistake (probably by hitting reply all, instead of reply). In this email Todd defames the recipients and then sends follow up emails offering (what some people call bribes or payoffs) to accept apologies and forget it ever happened.

There are other misdeeds in this saga including the claims that an emloyee playing games sent the email, and pronouncements that the official site does not require payment for linking to the site after saying the opposite in the mis-sent email. You should read it and judge for yourself what happened.

One thing to note is that JT sanitized Micks board to rid the ability to follow how this all went down, imo. But, several of us who were so insulted did keep all the communications. It is sad when you have a need to do that. And, he found ppl who maybe are stepping into his footsteps and believe that they are doing the right thing, but, while I cannot understand them, I see that may be a possibility. I don't respect them, but, they may be dupped.

I have seen ONE thread closed since I have been here and NOTHING was deleted from it. And, that only came as a result of someone complaining about the content, and I know who that someone was. They came to the thread, threw a bunch of spit balls, then did their usual, "I am so over this thread, I am gonna delete my posts and go. This is not worth my time" taking their crap out and then complaining. So, whatever rings their chimes, I guess. Just a transparent effort.

The fan club had great possibilities, but, in order for that to work, imo, there were some huge missing elements.

It should not have been started until it was READY, not the "it's coming soon" crap. I can think of nowhere else that a consumer would allow that. Hows about Bell South puts your phone in and doesn't turn it on, but, is going to soon...all the while taking your money?

Once started, there should have been a forthcoming regarding the seats that we would have access to BEFORE we joined to get seats, as that is how they sold it to us. They sold the "good seats" issue and most ppl joined for the seats. Stop a second..."BEST 20% OF THE FLOOR, CLOSEST". What does that mean? guys, what does that mean? Take the chart of the floor, mark out the best 20% closest and ask yourselves, was that EVER available? And, remember 600 seats per venue? Then look at the chart again...WTF? Then remember, once the club seats are gone, BEST OF THE OTHERS AVAIL BEFORE THE PUBLIC GETS TO BUY....what happened the first day of the regular sales? How many of you got MUCH better seats then? REMEMBER bet 20% of the FLOOR...not the venue. He changed it to venue later after the presale fiasco, then when that was noted, changed it back..

If everyone wants to just ignore the way the fans were disrespected and ignored (I will ban them, and they will go away) and treated like crap, take all that out...you were sold a bag of lies. If you want to eat it, sobeit...I do not. And, add to that the fact that I am insulted to my marrow, and hurt and have lost any excitement about the band, and that I am an activist, and there you go...

OH, and to FlyFireFly, I see that you have started a concerns II on Micks site and that took a lot of courage. I wanted to answer one question that you put up, as I cannot there...

The membership was for one year, the renewal is 29.95 for succesive years..that is one reason that they should have had the club ready BEFORE they put it up. They knew that this tour was coming, they knew what they needed to do, JT registered both sites up to four years ago...go to Google, you can see when he registered both, or I can send it to you. So, there is NO excuse cept for laziness and lack of concern.

Thumbs up

Best of luck to you, Firefly, getting answers to anything significant. Hopefully you won't be banned, just ignored. I haven't seen your thread (I still don't go there) but I trust it's worthy of attention. Not sure it'll get any from those who know the real answers to the issues. Thanks for doing it and good luck.

Default Sorry for the repeat

I posted this in another thread but thought it woud also make sense here if people want a quick peek at fan club/Mick's chat history from my point of view.

Bingo!

That was said over & over back when that board was revving up late last year. Todd said so himself several times. From the get go, that board's administrators made a very deliberate point of assuring visitors that they'd have a "direct link" to Mick & the band, & that all the other sites were run by leeches & frauds who were deliberately passing on incorrect information about the band.

It was a Kamano Moment ... all over again.

Thats the way I remember it too, David, before I was kicked off that site for posting a fan poll about the horrible first fan club ticket sale. I was posting at Mick's Chat from week one, and it was the first message board I ever posted on. I was once on a private list with a small group of people, and was registered here a few years ago but mostly lurked.

I remember all the early posts by board admins saying how fans would be getting close to the band being at Mick's site, and it being the only place to be. I freely admit I posted at Mick's Chat and joined the fan club right out of the gate (first hour it was open) becasue I mistakenly thought being Mick's site, and being named the "official" fan club and message board of the band, gave the site a legitimacy other sites didn't have. Boy was I dead wrong!

How did I form that belief of legitimacy? First off, I joined the fan club after getting a solicitation from the warnerreprise.com mailing list. Doesn't this alone give the operation the record label's and the band's good housekeeping seal of approval? Well, that's what I was naive enough to think. The fact that Mick (supposedly...who really knows for sure now??) participated in an online chat, made it seem like the site was operating with the full faith and cooperation of the band. How's anyone supposed to know differently?

After posting on the board for a while, issues began to crop up about the fan club. Questions were raised about fan to band contact, and carrots and sticks came into frequent use by the board admins. If you were there in the beginning you know what I mean. Savy people caught on to what the site really was about...making money for the people who operated it, not for getting the fans "in close touch" with the band, as early posts of the site operators alluded to.

Many fans, myself included, began making the board admins uncomfortable by asking too many direct questions about their selective use of censorship, about the fan club, the ticket pre-sales, and I guess I didn't do it in a nice enough way. I was banned after the first presale proved to be a total rip off and I posted a thread asking people to say Yea or Nay on the fan club. The thread only lasted a day before being deleted and my getting banned from the site. I also had some bad stuff happen to my computer (that's another story) at the same time. The thread about the fan club was up long enough for everyone to see that only 2 out of 60 people said they were happy with the fan club.

Mass bannings of upset fans followed, certain select fans, who later got unreal, questionable perks (some say payoffs) became board admins, lots of lies, deceipt, and misrepresations have come to light regarding the entire "official" operation. Letters have been written by many fans to band managment, legal and media agencies, and to the fan club director as well, and nothing is being addressed by anyone associated with the band. The media and legal people have shown great interest and the ball is rolling there, but as far as anyone who draped this operation with the legitimacy which fans bought into, nada's come from them.

It's true, Mick's Chat is not the fan club...but it is owned and maintained by the same staff that runs the fan club. So I still want to know why...with all that's come out about the people and dealings of those who run that site...why would anyone want to keep posting there?

Yes, I got banned so I'm not posting there, but that's not the reason. I could go back there under another name, but why would I want to? Now that I know what's really going on, I'd never give the people behind that place a continued image of legitimacy by going there. That's what it's all about...legitimacy. I feel I was presented a false image of what the site and the fan club were about and I was given that distorted image, in part, due to associations and advertisments from the band's legitimate associates. If the band is not "in the know" about this stuff, I still want to know how and why the people running the "official" site have gotten away with so many dirty dealing without any reprisals from people representing the band.

I'll summarize. Nothing happened with the Fleetwood Mac Fan Club, and that is why "everyone" is up in arms. Well, not everyone. Some folks don't mind that they lost $60-80 and got nothing.

Maybe you can read what's happened in Jonathan Todd's own words:
http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showth...?threadid=9802

Enjoy the show ANYHOW! That's what counts. Hopefully you'll have good seats.

You know, he actually registered both sites much longer ago than that.

One was like in 1998, and the other 1999, or something like that.

What a coincidence, this should be about the time all the SYW "marketing" should die down. Betcha he'll have "no use" for the domain after that.
