As far as place holding. I don't think it would be a problem if two or three people are in line together and take turns getting something to eat/drink, etc. What I would foresee being a problem would be if one person got in line really early and then a whole group of people, who were not in line all, day show and try to get in line with that one person who was there super early. I know I'd be upset if I waited in line for hours and then a group of people who hadn't been around all day showed up and tried to get in line in front of me.

That being said, I would imagine getting in line around 5:00 would be sufficient.
