i really didnt like this song at first but now i love it. i love how she sings higher in certain parts of the song. i have always wanted to go to new orleans for mardi gras and now i want to go even more. i just gotta get over my crazy fear of flying, ha!! it sounds like such a great place and i hear the food is amazing!

I wonder if Stevie realizes that Anne Rice moved out of New Orleans a became a born again christian. I personally wish Anne would get back to her old ways and write some more horror novels. There is nobody better.

I'm a firm believer in memorials rather than funerals. When I gather with friends to remember a lost loved one I would much rather celebrate their life than mourn their death, and in a way that's how I see this song. I have never been to New Orleans and when Katrina hit, after my sadness for the people and worry about their safety, I was very saddened that I had never seen it. The news reports made it sound like it would never be the same and I was so saddened that I had missed it. But this song is a reminder of how amazing it is and the spirit of the people have been restoring it's former glory. I think it's a very sweet song and a loving tribute to such a beautiful place.

Interview with the Vampire is her first book in the vampire series so you should definitely start there.

The Witching Hour is a huge book about witches but it was set in New Orleans and it stands fairly outside the vampires sequence so you could start with this one as well.

Blackwood Farm is a later book in the vampire series but it doesn't rely so heavily on the built-up mythology of previous books, and its also very New Orleans-area based (and also very good).

The Witching Hour sounds legit- would love to read something set in New Orleans!

I'm glad that the song wasn't some maudlin thing about people drowning and looting and being stuck in the Superdome. As it is, it struck just the right chord.

About Anne Rice...I don't think "born again" is the right term. That implies a very conservative, evangelical brand of Christianity, and that isn't what Rice became involved in. I think she just became more active in her Catholicism. But I read somewhere that she had issues with their stance on homosexuality because of her son, and is no longer active.

Thanks for clarifying I've read some of her books years ago but did not follow her personal life much.It makes sense from her writings that she is Catholic..alot of practicing Catholics are pretty accepting of gays actually the church's stance is that being homosexually inclined is not intrinsically a sin just acting on it is..same for heteros if they are unmarried quite different from the almost universally homophobic" born agains"But back on topic I like "New Orleans " alot even her frank imitation of Sheryl Crows' phasing and vocal inflections on parts of the song are cute...kind of things coming full circle.

She re discovered her catholic roots and now is just a believer of Jesus Christ anne rice, Her son Christopher Rice is an excellent writer too love his books too. I instantly love this song , I can hear this song on the radio and also hear her do this live accousticly with just her and waddy the girls.

Have you missed the blitz of media attention this year since Anne has renounced Christianity, but not her faith in God? If you're on her facebook page, she rails against the Catholic church hardcore daily regarding the priest molestation scandal, the church's homophobic stance, the church's stronghold in the secular world including politics and corporations, etc.

Yeah, I remember reading about that - didn't know there was a media blitz about it, but maybe I just wasn't paying close enough attention. My brief dalliance with Catholicism didn't last long either.

I read the Witching Hour series (Witching Hour, Lasher, & Taltos) several times a year and have for over a decade. The books are huge, expansive, overwhelming, rambling, and INCREDIBLE! Considering when they were originally written (late '80s), the taboo subject matter discussed within the books is pretty shocking. Anne Rice has had a HUGE effect on me through these books. Through discussing the most dark, hidden, shameful aspects of humanity I think she helps people understand why others act the way they do, and why we think the way we think. You'll pick up/learn something new every single time you read the books, and I've read them dozens of times. If you like very dark, gothic subject matter set in lush settings (New Orleans mainly), you'll LOVE the Witching Hour series.

I'm not sure how accurate this is. Yes she did turn very religious for awhile after her husband died, but I wouldn't call that "born again Christian" (which I equate with Baptists or the hard-right religionistas)...she more just went back to the Catholic church, which she has now left again.

I sqealed when I read this!! I love Anne Rice's work, and am thrilled she heard Stevie's song.
I attempted to email her, from her website last night, and because of the never ending tornadic weather here, I could not get an email through.
