The song is actually not inspired by her. It was an instrumental which didn't have a name, so he just decided to name it Stephanie. As far as I know, he never performed it solo live.

In the 2001 VH-1 Fanatic episode dedicated to Stevie, she said it was her favorite of all Lindsey's songs & that she named it Stephanie cuz he needed a name for it, but that's really all she said about it.

I read once a long time ago, maybe even here on The Ledge??? that it was Stevie's favorite Lindsey accoustic song, so he named it after her. But I've never heard her comment on it.

The story is Stevie suggested the title to LB. According to BN band members, he performed it live during the BN live shows. I am assuming they meant the shows they did right after joining FM and not earlier, but it's not clear. Lindsey has recently rerecorded it and that version was heard over the PA at FM's Unleashed shows in 2009.

No, unfortunately as far as I know the new version has yet to surface. Fingers crossed it was for a new BN release. It was a little different, still beautiful but as I recall it had an abrupt ending that was a bit jarring. Granted, I was straining to hear it over the din, but I was also standing right at the speakers.

I had almost forgotten about that, but remember that segment well now that you mention it. She seemed genuinely stumped when the Fanatic winner asked for her favorite Lindsey song and replied that she would need to come back to that question. She answered the question about her favorite Christine song ("Oh Daddy") and then gave her reply about "Stephanie".

I remember that. She gave a sigh like it was hard to choose.

Here's the transcription of the segment:

Elena: Um, if you had to pick a favorite song by Christine and one by Lindsey, which ones would you pick and why?

Stevie: Um. Christine. My favorite song of Christine's is a song called "Oh Daddy". That was written about Mick, when he was going through his divorce with his children and everything, and it was very, kind of a sad, sad time, you know. And that song to me is very Chinese-Tibetan... You know. It has all that ah, kind of mystic thing. And I think that the melody is the most beautiful, that she's written. And I also love doing that on stage. Um, for Lindsey, my favorite song...(big sigh) well I'm kinda, I'm gonna have to think about this one for a minute.

Elena: That's O.K. (laughs)

Stevie: O.K., my favorite song is, ah, the instrumental that he wrote, that's called "Stephanie". And it's really only called "Stephanie" because I suggested that it be called "Stephanie".

"he wrote the instrumental and when i heard it i just cried. i was so touched. he told me 'baby i love you so much and i wrote this song for you. there aren't any words because no words can describe how much you truly mean to me.' then we made love all night. and that's my story about 'Stephanie'."

I really wonder what her answer would be to the same question today.

hahaha.....I somehow really doubt that, but then again we've seen history rewriting itself all over the place recently where our Miss Stephanie is concerned.
